Go, Go, Go, Players!

Thursday (04/06/2009)

a) The Athlete Number

l The kids searched for theirs and I helped them to pin.
l Some wore numbered jersey or t-shirt. Thus, we pinned only the back. They were excited about it.
l We talked about yesterday’s competition. Some kids could not recognize their teammates. Thus, Foo Soon suggested that we wrap a wrist band but I propose a head band because they can see better.
l There was only a red cloth available. The Thunderstorm who behaved better manages to get the red strips of head band. I tied around their heads.
l The kids decided that they want to invite their schoolmates to watch their performance. Thus, we have to improve our skills as well as enhance our Cheerleaders’ skills.

b) 2 cheers.
l Justin wore a nice t-shirt that has got 4 different balls. The rugby, the football, the basketball and the golf. The first 3 games have their cheerleaders performance.
l Cheerleaders have 2 different performances. One is while the players are playing and a major one while the players are having their break.
l I showed the girls a video clip of cheerleading by Primary Students.
l Thus, we tried our own performance to the song of “I Feel Good”.
l Meanwhile, the boys observed them and drew their pictures. Some even labeled their friends’ names.
l We did 3 rounds.

c) Basketball Competition
l I brought down the radio for the cheerleading activity.
l Today, the players were better as they could see who they are throwing the ball. Less foul, thus; less free throws.
l Our promising players include Foo Soon who could jump high, Yun Zhe who could catch well, Eugene who could bounce well, Song Chuan who could grab the ball fast, Jien Wei who could block the opponent well, Max who tried his best at guarding the hoop, Jin Shan who played determinedly, Justin who enjoyed every moment and Ze Yan who played well too.
l The Cheerleaders were more consistent and independent. During the 5 minutes break, I guded them for the Cheerleading performance. It was fun!
l Today’s score: Thunderstorm vs. Twister; 1-2.

Craft: Athlete Number

Wednesday (03/06/2009)

a) Le Xin’s Birthday

l Everyone was happy because we were celebrating Le Xin’s birthday. A very nice one with fruits, a chocolate cake as well as some tidbits.
l We sang a birthday song and thanked Le Xin’s parents. We took photos together and sang the song “You Are Special”.

b) Song: I Feel Good
l This is the Cheerleader Song, a familiar one that most people would have heard. It’s the NTV7’s theme: “I Feel Good”.
l First, we read through the lyrics and the kids explained. There was a line: “It’s so nice like sugar and spice”. They asked the meaning of “spice”.
l Then, we sang together with the music. The kids love it so much that even the boys started dancing…..imagining themselves as the Cheerleaders too.

c) Craft: Athlete Number.
l The kids took 2 pieces of paper and started decorating their numbers, names and also the group’s name. One for the front, another for the back. We didn’t want to use cloth as it would be difficult to colour. Then we slipped the paper into small plastic bags.

d) Why do we sweat?
l There’s lots of blood capillaries under our skin. When we feel hot, our body would evaporate. The blood capillaries will be nearer to our sin and encourage the evaporation of water which we call sweat from us. Besides, water; some other proteins and salt would also be discharged from our skin pores.
l That’s the reason why we sweat and get sticky. After sweating, we need a lot of water and sometimes even little salt to replace the loss and energize our body again.
l We sweat more when we exercise. We also sweat when we are sleeping and resting.

Thunderstorm versus Twister

Tuesday (02/06/2009)

a) The Clapping Game Song

l We warmed up by singing the song and moving around. Two people a pair and they got better each time. After the completion of a round, they have to quickly change a new partner.
l They learnt some vocabulary: yourself, everywhere, clapping game.

b) Cheerleaders practice

l The girls gathered: Le Xin, Yun Wen, Shi Jie, Jin Nan, Sharlene and Jen Ning. They turned their back first. Once the music is on, they turned to face the audience. Some steps they followed mine, some they suggested.
l We used the rhythm 1234, 2234, 3234, and 4234 as guidance.

c) Basketball Competition
l The most thrilled moment: Thunderstorm against Twister! Thunderstorm comprised of Eugene, Zi Jun, Jin Shan, Wen Yue and also Foo Soon. Twister comprised of Jien Wei, Max, Song Chuan, Yun Zhe and Justin. The reserved were Jing Kai, Guan Yi and Shu Wei. Ze Yan was absent.
l Today’s game witnessed much improvement. There was more team work and they know how to avoid foul as well as throw the ball to another partner once grabbed the ball. However, some of them tend to throw to the wrong person. We have to solve this challenge.
l Due to fouls, Twister was given a few free throws and that was the reason they scored 5 against Thunderstorm, 2.
l They were better at grabbing the ball and passing around. In between the game 5 minutes break was given and the Cheerleaders performed their cheers. They were not independent yet but at least they have a better idea.

The Rody and Big Gym Ball

Monday (01/06/2009)

a) Flash Cards
l Words: Ride, climb, run, walk, skip, hop, run, bounce.
l Then, the kids walked in a circle. When I hit my tambourine, I instructed them to change the movements. They were good at it.
l Then for the second round, when I hit the tambourine, I used the flash cards to instruct them.

b) The Rody and Big Gym Ball.
l The class was divided into 2 groups. One was to ride on the bouncy horse which was called Rody. The other group was to bounce on the big ball. They just enjoyed themselves. However, it was more challenging to bounce on the big ball.
l 3 peak cones were lined and they had to ride or bounce through them. At the end of them, they had to read 4 flash cards laid on the floor.
l 14 kids were able to read all the words independently. The other 3 needed some guidance.

c) Basketball or worksheet?
l They really looked forward to playing basketball…..for the boys. However, disciplined is always highlighted for every activity that we do. They were quite unorganized when playing “The Rody and The Big Ball”. Thus, I ordered that no game for the day. Games would only be carried out with the availability of teamwork and good disciplines.
l We did the worksheet on the flashcards we learnt earlier.
l The kids wrote extra sentences: “I can ride on a horse. OR I can bounce on the big ball.

d) Corner Practice
l After completing their worksheets, the kids went to the related corner to practice either pom-pom or cheerleading. The other corner is for them to practice shooting balls into the hoop.
l They hoped that they could play basketball tomorrow. Let’s just see their teamwork, then!

e) Our Red Lady Fingers
l Every morning, two kids would take turn to be the gardeners to water our vegetables.
l Jen Ning and Jia Yun discovered that our lady fingers have bore fruit……yes! They have grown! We were of course excited and also saw that our baby melons are growing bigger each and every day.

The Clapping Song

Friday (29/05/2009)

a) The Clapping Song
· We read the song line by line. The kids tried interpreting them.
· Then, we tried singing that song. Its from the Barney. The kids loved it. We tried singing along with the CD. The kids tried a few times until they got the rhythm.
· A few kids volunteered to show the moves for the songs. We thought that Foo Soon’s movement was quite nice. It involved jumping and clapping.

b) Game
· We queued in 2 lines. Each has his or her partner.
· For the first few lines, we moved our body funnily. Then, we clapped our hands against one another. After finishing the song, we changed a different partner. The game continues. Its exciting as the kids need to be alert all the time!

c) Our Jersey
· We discussed on a team’s identification. Jersey is one of them. Each kid would have to think of a number. Eugene suggested that every mother can help to sew their kid’s number. Some said that we can write on a cloth and pin to our t-shirt. I asked the kids to think of more ideas for next week’s activity.

d) Drawing: Basketball
· Most of them drew their most memorable moment during the game. They even write their friends’ names. They would explain to mean the maning of it.
· Some would look at my drawings for ideas.
· All of them labelled the vocabulary.

Our Digestive System

Thursday (28/05/2009)

a) Fire Stones
Ze Yan: What are those for?
Sharlene: Did you get those 2 rocks from FRIM?
l I shared with the kids the rocks from FRIM. These rocks were used by the cavemen to produce friction and make fire. Sometime, this method is used by campers.
l Rub the two rocks together and in the dark, one can see the sparkles.
l Song Chuan said that some people used woods to rub and get fire.
l However, people don’t do that at home nowadays because it’s dangerous. Furthermore, it’s troublesome. Just but a match or a lighter.

b) The Body Structure
l It was very nice of Eugene to share his family’s Body Structure Model. We een lent to the other classes to have a look.
l While dismantling the parts, we learnt the names as well as the functions of “Digestive System”.
Sharlene: We need muscle to do many things.
l Example: pull, push, carry and hit the mosquito (Justin).
l We also need muscle to help us in food digestion.
l Vocabulary: brain, throat (esophagus), lungs, blood veins (red- oxygen; grey – without oxyen but with carbon Dioxide), the heart, stomach, lungs, kidneys and rectum.

c) The Digestive System
l When we eat food such as apple and a burger, the teeth would cut them into smaller pieces with the help of saliva.
l They would go down through our throat into stomach. Stomach would secrete juices and Hydrochloric Acid is the strongest juice.
l They would break the food into smaller pieces together with the help of stomach’s 3 strong muscle. Our stomach would take 4 hours before turning them into mixture similar to milk shake call “chime”. Thus, we usually get hungry after 4 – 5 hours.
l Chyme goes into small intestines. Juices are also produced here to break the food so that villi of small intestine can absorb the minerals and nutrients.
l The leftover is usually water and fiber that go into big intestines.
l About 100 types of bacteria are in big intestine that will further break our food. In the process, bacterias produce bad odour. Thus, our faeces or “motion” is smelly.

d) FRIM Drawing
l The kids recalled the sharings of yesterday. I helped them to label the pictures they have in mind. Example: waterfall, rocks, trees, snakes, hill, FRIM Kepong and etc.
l They drew happily into their Record Book.
