The Concert Day

Friday (10/12/2010).

a) The Rehearsal.
• The school will have the rehearsal at the living hall on Wednesday (15/12/2010) from 10 am to 12 pm. Music teacher, Wushu teacher and all the teachers are involved. Kids are to wear their full attire and equip with their props. Meanwhile, the actual concert day in the Sunday itself, 19th. December, 2010 from 8.30am until 12 noon. The kids were excited. They were even excited to know that there will be a class party on the following week. School shall be closed from 24th December, 2010 until 2nd. January, 2011. School will be closed for 10 days and in 2011, the kids will be in 6 year-old class. Hooray!

b) The Practice.
• We did the practice in 6-year old classroom as there was Wushu practice at the living hall.
• Cikgu Xin Ru came and watch our performance. She will be assisting the class on the concert day too. She said, everyone has improved. A few kids need to improve further. Keep it up, kids!

c) Our Storybook continuation.
• The kids continued with their darwing and colouring of their favourite scene. Qian Joe was generous to lend the class his new glittering pens. Everyone thanked him. It was so nice to see Qian Joe and Chun Kit got along closer together as they used to argue over small matters. It’s like watching Foo Soon and Jun Hong being together as good friends. I believe the performance process must have influenced both Captain Hook and Peter pan to get closer….haaaa!

My favourite scene.

Tuesday (07/12/2010)

a) The Practice.
• We practised at the living hall. A few kids were reminded to behaved more seriously during the performance. The dance, “Following The leader” needed some prompting for a better performance. Other than that, everything was good.

b) Drawing.
• We recapped about our discussions yesterday. I sketched the pictures on the board.
• The kids started drawing on their paper. The older ones also labeled their pictures. Wee Hong drew a Disneyland castle, Chun Kit drew the octopus and crocodile, Natalie drew herself as Tinker Bell, Qian Joe drew Peter Pan and etc. They are more courageous to draw their thoughts. 

Our Storybook Continuation.

Monday (06/12/2010)

a) The assistance.
• Today we did our practice downstairs. We had Teacher Pik Xia to help us with the music. On the performance day, I will be the narrator to guide the kids. As the sound system is far from me, we are happy to have her helping us monitoring the music.
• Altogether, this “Kids Musical: Where is Peter Pan?” has got a short fashion show, 5 dances, and a battle scene. Our second performance is a short dance call “Following The Leader”. Thus, 10 pieces of music are involved for the different scenes. The kids are already well versed with them.
• Teacher Huang saw a little of their performance and said they have improved a lot. Well done, kids!

b) Our Storybook: My favourite scene.
• We didn’t have much time. However, we talked about our favourites scenes in our musical drama. Some like Tinker Bell flying, some like the battle, some like Michael Jackson, some like seeing crocodile hitting octopus’s backside, some like the Disney Dance. We shall draw tomorrow as it was time to go home
.

Dumbo

Friday (03/12/2010)

a) The Practice
• Today, we practised in the classroom as there was Wushu practice at the living room.
• The practice got better and better. The only challenge was having some kids being absent. Thus, I had to be the replacement. They were more independent.
• We talked about taking care of the props and where to place them after the musical performance.

b) Cartoon: Dumbo.
• As a reward, we watched Dumbo together. They were very happy. We watched half way through and shall continue with it again.
• The flying storks brought down babies for all the animals including to Mrs. Jumbo, a circus elephant. The baby had bih huge ears and all the animlas laughed at it. Mrs. Jumbo was crossed but she loved her baby so much that she called her Dumbo. The animals worked very hard to set up tents for circus. On the performance day, people laughed at Dumbo and Mrs. Jumbo got so mad that she attacked them. She was jailed and prisoned. Poor Dumbo was left alone. Everyone disliked him and a friendly mouse became his friend. Mr. Mouse motivated him that his ears were so special that they must be meant for useful matters. They brainstormed together. The clever Mr. Mouse pretended as the Ringmaster’s dream asking him to make Dumbo a start because of his big huge ears. The next day, Dumbo was made the main performer. It was supposed to jumped from a trampoline until the very top of the tent. However, as Dumbo was running, he stumbled on his huge ears and fell down, knocking over the other huge elephants. Everyone ran away and the tent collapsed……..to be continued.

Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.

Wednesday (08/12/2010)

a) Vocab recognition
• We recapped words learnt: chest, pirate, ship, princess, sword, castle, peacock, eagle, dance, sing, performance, puppet, etc.

b) Shawn’s storybook: Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
• This classic story tells how a poor woodcutter found gold in the thieves’ secret cave. He took some and became rich ( we discussed that this is wrong doing). The woodcutter became rich. His wife wore a beautiful ecklace and the head thief saw it. He and his thieves planned to rob them. That night, the head thief pretended being lost and asked for accommodation. The kid woodcutter allowed and treated him dinner too. Meanwhile, the other thieves hid in the kitchen’s big jars. The maid realized this and she quickly pured hot oil into each big jar. They screamed and died. The head chief was the caught. The King heard about this and wanted to meet the brave ad clever maid. He made her his daughter as the King had no child.
Moral: We have to think wisely before acting. We have to be courageous when in trouble. When we do bad things, the negative impact would come back on us just like Ali baba who stole the money and was later being robbed.
c) The Practice.
• We talked about the rules during the performance especially to remind those who like having fun during practice.
• Today, I left them independently and guided very little. I guided on Peter Pan’s dance, the battle, the crocodile ad octopus dance. Lastly, I reminded the kids to put their props into a box by the side properly before performing the dance, “Following The Leader”.

Our Friends’ Photos.

Monday (29/11/2010)

a) Vocab recap
• We recapped words learnt included: castle, fly, magic wand, Disneyland, pirate etc.

b) Continuation of Storybook.
• We continued making our storybooks.
• The kids had to ensure they have every friend’s photo which will be 16 photos altogether.
• Today’ situation was better as the kids were more careful at taking care of their cut photos. The others who lost some photos, started counting the numbers. They would come to me for the missing photos of their friends. It was fun seeing them counting the numbers and checking their friends’ faces.

c) The Practice
• We did the practice in the classroom as Soon Yu and Zhe Qing weren’t here. However, if allows, tomorrow we should be doing full dress rehearsal in the school’s living hall.
• The kids are getting better and more independent. I reminded them to be aware with their props, where to put them after the performance before the next dancing performance. Yet, some kids were rather playful and consistent reminder is needed.

Our Storybook

Monday (29/11/2010)

a) Briefing
• We talked about making our own storybook to share with family and friends. We actually had talked about this before and we were doing that today.
• Each kid was given a set of friends’ photos altogether 16 friends. I gave them a view of how to make the second page of the storybook.
• Each page has 3 rows whereby each photo is to be pasted on the left side. The right side will be pasted with the “after dress-up” which will be later.
• Altogether, there must be 16 photos.
• Well, only half of the kids could follow the instructions. The others chose to paste them all over a page. Well…….it’s okay because storybooks do come in many formats.
• To avoid confusion, the kids paste after cutting each photo. The 4 years old needed guidance except Shawn.

b) The Practice.
• We did the Practice in the classroom as individual attention was needed for smaller groups.

Body Painting

Thursday (01/12/2010)

a) Body Painting
• Part of a performance includes make-up. Instead of make-up, the school provided us with Body Painting, a safe product by Luna. There were blue, green, yellow and red colour. First, I painted the kids’ body which could be their face, arms or even legs. They could choose to imagine they are someone and I shall make-up them as in their imagination. Some chose to be their drama character such as Snow White and pirates. Some preferred to be animals such as bears and snakes. Some preferred plants. Then, the kids chose 2 of their favourite colours and painted themselves. We took photos and then washed up ourselves. It was enjoyable.

b) Story-telling: Goldilocks and the three bears.
• I read Jun Yu’s storybook the class. It was an interesting story with good moral values. It was an adventure of how Goldilocks went into a stranger’s home in the forest. She ate the baby bear’s porridge, tried on all chairs and broke baby bear’s chair and finally slept on it’s bed again! When they came back, the bears were angry, puzzled and amazed to find Goldilocks in baby bear’s home. Goldilocks jumped to her feet , ran as fast as possible and never came back.
• The class discussed about values learnt. We shouldn’t touch peoples’ belongings without permission. We shouldn’t wander alone in the dangerous forest or anywhere without our family knowledge.

c) The Practice.
• Each day, it gets more challenging to practise as some kids go off early, some were absent, some went for holiday. However, I believe that regular practice with the kids would enforce their movements. I advised them to practise at home. A few kids always do that included Xing Tong, Yu Xuan and Wee Hong. In fact today, the kids volunteered to relieve the absentees’ places temporary. Example: Zhi Feng the Superman was also Captain Hook. Xing Tong the Cinderella was also TikerBell. They were good.

Dressing-up.

Wednesday (01/12/2010)

a) Dressing-up
• Who wouldn’t be excited to dress up for a performance. I gave each kid their attire. Most attires were theirs which the kids and I had work together to decorate them. Accessories were added, stickers were pasted and etc. Then, they wore their particular mask. Some equipped themselves with swords and the hook. The pirates carried a long chain and a big ship with them.
• We talked about the rules and regulations before marching to the living hall for practice. Xiang Wei, Soon Yu, Zhe Qing and Shawn were absent. Thus, I had to relieve their places. We just had to do this practice as the kids and I already agreed earlier.

b) The adjustments.
• While we were practicing, Teacher Huang came and watched. She gave ideas on certain costumes which were to be sewn and tighten.

c) The Full Dress Practice.
• It was a good one except that the kids need to be more proactive and focused more. They needed to scream louder for help, both Captain Hook and Peter Pan need to speak louder , the younger kids must be more attentive and each kid must be responsible for their props.

d) Motivation.
• It’s always important to motivate the kids. I can’t even remember much of what I was doing at the age of 5. I thought that these kids were marvelous. Teacher Huang gave encouragement. As for me, I want every kid to have fun throughout the process yet show improvement.  This calls for various strategies.

The Kids’ Musical: Where Is Peter Pan?

Friday (26/11/2010)

a) Our Storybook.
• We talked about the various storybooks kids have read. We discussed about the contents and have decided to make our drama into a storybook. I have already taken their individual photos before make-up and dress up. I shared with them my idea of book the “Before and After” concept. I between the pages would include the short story lines and drawings by kids. Thus, today; we drew the Cover Page with the title “Peter Pan”.
• The drawings were of free topic but within the scope of our topic. Some kids drew automatically, some went to get the puppets on the notice board and very few asked for my assistance. 

b) Our Title.
• I shared with the kids that there would be a Musical Peter Pan Drama in Sunway Hotel from 26th Nov until 2nd of January. Wow…….what a coincidence! I shall discuss with the management if the kids could watch this golden moment as an inspiration for their concert….wow! Otherwise, parents could bring kids and family there as their family activity!
• Meanwhile, we brainstormed as many titles as possible for our drama. Among:
- Pirates! - Captain Hook vs. Peter Pan. – Help, help, Peter Pan!
- Save us, Peter Pan! - Where is Peter Pan? - Peter Pan: The Kids’ Musical.
Majority chose “Where is Peter Pan?” Thus, ladies and gentleman; please make yourself available to watch our concert on 19th. December which includes : The Kids’ Musical: Where is Peter Pan!

c) The Practice.
• We practised only the necessary part where kids need to improve further. I don’t want to tire them yet make them feel fun to perform. I bet they do!

Jack And The Beanstalk

Tuesday (23/11/2010)

a) The Practice
• As Zhe Qing and Jun Yu had to go off earlier after lunch, thus we did our practice in the morning. Altogether, we used up 30 minutes …..wow! (including traing and being independent).
• The kids are more well versed now. They only need to know when to appear and disappear after the dialogue lines!

b) Organising individual files.
• As we had been doing various crafts and worksheets, it is best for the kids to organize their items in the individual files. At the same time, they know whether they have completed or ortherwise.

c) Jun Yu’s storybook: Jack and The Beanstalk.
• As we are more settled with Peter Pan, I thought we could have more new stories. I read this story with the class and who….it was lots of fun. Magic beans, huge beanstalk tree, monster, Jack the fast boy, the goose that laid golden egg ad eventually the monster died when it fell together with its Beanstalk to the ground.
• Moral: A very fun story yetwe shouldn’t take things not belonging to us. If Jack was unlucky, he could have eaten by the monster. If the monster’s tree was really down, he could no longer go home and would start attacking the Earth’s living things.

d) Individual Practice
• This session, I trained kids who needed more guidance. Qian Joe was very happy to help me cutting the skeleton skulls for pirates. The others played Corner Playing just for 25 minutes. There are really lots of things to be done prior performance

Thursday (25/11/2010)

Keep it up, kids!

a) The Practice
• What could be more beautiful than watching these very young kids improve time after time? What could be more fun than watching everyone takes part? However, discipline still needs to be instilled so that they know their positions and turn to be on the stage. They must also know when to disappear, when to scream for help, when to turn and etc. Each and everyone are always trying ….I believe the process does affect the kids. Bravo……kids!
• We did rehearsal at the living hall as it is spacious, watched by 4 and 5 years old. Before starting, I have reminded the kids the importance of discipline.  The teachers saw the improvement and hopefully we will bloom further with love and joy. 

Wednesday (24/11/2010)

The More We Get Together

a) Be patient
• Being a teacher with young learners really test one’s patience…..but I believe that whatever we do will be copied by the kids which later shapes as their attitude. When some kids are not behaving well during the performance practice, I ask myself frequently, “Why? Is it too difficult for them? Are they thirsty for attention? Why can the others follow the instructions but not the few?” All I know is…..fill the class with positive and love energy so that they want to be here again and learn lots of new things from loving friends and teachers. Thus, sometimes I handle the situation as if all kids are adults chairing a meeting, sometimes I speak to them personally for encouragement but sometimes, reprimand is really necessary because the world has every rule. 
• That was why after discussion with the class, I have decided to swap the kids’ roles. Phewww……after the hard work!

b) Vocabulary
• To recap words learnt, each kid was given a picture they had to guess the word. Next, I wrote the words on the cardboard so that they could paste them.
• Then, we read the words together.

c) Song: The More We Get Together
• We sang the song while holding hands. Then, the kids took turn to run through the gaps between friends. The song is stressing about unity.
• Next, the kids assisted with performance props. Example: decorating Tinker Bell’s wings and etc.

Childrens’ Day

Friday (19/11/2010)

a) Welcome!
• We went to ABC Daycare Centre in the afternoon for this celebration. First, the older brothers and sisters welcomed us. Then, they performed a few interesting dances for us.
• The kindergarten kids got excited and some even introduced their siblings to me. 

b) Station Games.
• Next, their teachers told us about the 5 games at each station. How to play successfully to gain a stamp for each station. With 5 stamps, they can then proceed downstairs for the maths quiz session to gain their little gift hamper.
• Station one: Spinning around with umbrella and to fish a candy from a plate using one’s mouth. Station two: The bowling game. Station 3: The alphabet game. Station 4: The music game. Station 5: The ball game.

c) Teabreak
• The kids were given some bread and a drink of herbal tea. They were very happy.

d) Discussion.
• Back in ABC Learning Centre, the kids were allowed to choose 1 food from their gift hamper. As they were eating, we discussed about their feelings and experience. They said they were very happy. Among their sharing:
- I like the gift hamper. I like the bowling game. I like the umbrella game. I like the music game. There is also alphabet game. I like throwing the ping pong ball intop the egg carton. There is also Maths Quiz next to the gift hamper. I like their Teabreak.
• There isn’t one item that they missed sharing about.

e) A “Thank You” Book.
• Thus, the kids decided to draw pictures thanking them. We shall then bind them into a book. The kids drew very well. A few kids followed Wee Hong’s step whereby they drew columns on the A4 paper and filled in each column with the different games…….wow! They had an unforgettable moment. 

Practice 1

Thursday (18/11/2010)

a) Props.
• Some props were almost ready and so the kids tried out if they are suitable for performance. The props were partially made by the kids and touched up by me. Among: the crocodile cap mask, the Dumbo elephant cap mask, the octopus cap mask, the crocodile cloak, the octopus tentacles suit, Captain Hook’s hook and also his long sword.

b) Practice 1: “Peter Pan Saves The Day”
• After practicing dances in small groups, we are almost ready to combine the whole dances into a musical drama. Due to the stage condition and not many microphones available, I would probably be the Narrator for the Performance Day.
• The dance was quite good but getting the kids to be at their positions promptly is what takes a lot of training and time especially a few younger kids. However, with practice; they got better. Anyone who overcomes the stage fear would be a step more successful and confident……I believe. 
c) Peacock colouring.

As we had another 25 minutes remaining, the kids continued with their Peacock colouring sheet. Meanwhile, I got the kids to come forward individually to make the unfinished props.

d) The Casts:
Following are the casts for our musical performance.
a) Zhi Feng as Superman. b) Zhe Qing as Princess Tiger Lily.
c) Kwong Yong as Batman. d) Xing Tong as Cinderella.
e) Yun Xin as Dumbo. e) Yee Xuan as Snow White.
f) Wee Hong as Michael Jackson. g) Chia Yen as Minnie Mouse.
h) Qian Joe as Captain Hook. i) Xiang Wei as Mr. Smee.
j) Soon Yu as pirate 2. k) Zheng Yuan as the crocodile.
l) Jun Yu as the octopus. m) Chun Kit as Peter pan.
n) Natalie as Tinker Bell. o) Shawn as John Darling.
The story created by the class goes like this:
“It’s Peter Pan’s birthday and his friends in Disneyland are throwing him a surprise birthday party. Peter is on his way to Disneyland. Meanwhile his DISNEY friends are practising the performances. Suddenly, Captain Hook and pirates barge in hunting for Peter Pan. Feeling disappointed, he kidnaps DISNEY friends and all go aboard his Pirate Ship. Meanwhile, the hungry crocodile and octopus gets excited swimming in the creek….waiting for food! Luckily, Peter Pan comes in time to rescue his DISNEY friends. They battle and of course, the 3 pirates fall into the creek making the crocodile and octopus very happy! Everyone gathers around Peter Pan thanking their hero!”

Zhi Feng’s Storybook

Tuesday (16/11/2010)

a) Peacock
• We had further discussion upon kids’ questions yesterday. Peacocks can fly even above our house roof but of course not as high as eagles. They lay eggs thus they don’t feed peachicks with milk. The mother search for seeds, wheat or even small animals like mice to feed them. They need a lot of space which explains why they are free to move around I the Bird Park under the enormous huge net. With limited space, peacocks, peahens and their babies get stressed easily and will die. The net is also to disallow monkeys from coming into Bird Park.
• Can humans fly?
No because we don’t have wings. Some birds can’t fly too even with wings such as ostrich. Some can fly low such as chickens and ducks.
• How can humans fly then?
Zhe Qing was the first to answer correctly….by aeroplanes. Humans also fly using gliders, hot air balloon, parachute for emergency situations and etc. The kids were very keen about this topic.

b) Colouring
• I gave the kids a picture of peacock to colour.
• Meanwhile, I called a few kids individually to prepare for the performance props.

c) Performance Practice.
• We practiced at the living hall as it is more spacious. Today, we had a new performance by Zheng Yuan the crocodile and Jun Yu as the octopus. They were very funny but grasped fast. The others showed improvement with less prompting from me.

d) Zhi Feng’s Storybook.
• Zhi Feng bought a new storybook from Jusco entitled “Peter Pan”. Of course everyone already knew about this story but they requested me to tell them again…..haaa and I did! Howver, this round the kids were very attentive with less questions in between. They even sang the song “Following The Leader” when they saw the lost children marching behind John! 

Peafowls

Monday (15/11/2010)

a) Peafowls
• We learnt that a male is called peacock while a female is called Peahen. They are native in India and live in tropical rainforest. The male can spread its colourful feathers which usually are dark blue while the female can’t and have brown or black feathers only. They make their nests out of twigs and leaves. They eat seeds, leaves and also little animals such as mice.
Class: Do they fly high? How do they take care of their babies if they don’t have hands? What about owls? Do they open their eyes when they sleep?
• We shall look into details in the ext lesson.

b) Recording Continuation.
• The kids continue with their pictures. I drew some of them beforehand as they recalled what they saw.
• Today, Soon yu actually drew and coloured a big Peacock…….hmmm…..that’s an improvement!  Wee Hong actually drew small boxes and inseted every bird that he saw in them….haaaa!

c) Performance Practice.
• We did our practice: The dance of “Following the Leader”, the Princesses dance, Michael Jackson Dace and the latest “Pirates Dance”.
• I shared with the kids some ideas to make the masks of crocodile, Dumbo, octopus and Minnie Mouse.

The Magnificent Trip

Friday (12/11/2010)

a) The Bird park
• When we reached there, the peacocks first attracted everyone’s attention from the main door. There were so many of them. We were lucky to see a few spreading its train of feathers. They were so beautiful. Peahens aren’t able to spread their feathers.
• We saw many other birds. Among: rooster, love birds, parrots, crowned pigeons, emu hatching their big green eggs, ostriches, ducklings, fish in ponds, a little waterfall, strange looking owls, Hornbills, tortoises, little chicks hatching from eggs in a nursey building. There were so many colourful little birds as if painted by artists. The Bird Park was surrounded by an extremely huge net thus disabling monkeys from getting in.
• We had lunch at the comfortable cafeteria, played at the playground for a while and journeyed to the tunnel waterfall. Along the way, we saw birds discharge on the floor and cautioned one another. It was a wonderful trip as if walking down the Memory Lane.

b) Discussion and recording.
• We reached school early around 3.30pm. Everyone was so tired that almost all took an hour nap in the classroom.
• After waking up, we started discussing about our wonderful trip. Everyone had so much to share that eventually, I drew almost all the birds that we saw in Bird park….thanks to kids’ sharing.
• They started sketching their favourite moment. From my observation, 4 years old love the tunnel waterfall. The others especially love their moment with the peacocks. Their recordings were really beautiful.

Our ship.

Thursday (11/11/2010)

a) Our ship
• I sketched a picture of a ship on the whiteboard. Then, I sketched with a pencil on a big piece of cardboard box.
• We discussed a little about our performance. It will be the moment Soon Yu and Xiang Wei to carry the ship out when the Disney friends are captured.
• The kids were divided into two groups. One to colour the sea blue. The other to colour the ship brown. As we didn’t have brown, I showed the kids that a mixture of red and black is equal to brown.
• Although it was quite messy, but they really enjoyed themselves.

b) The telescope and flags.
• To avoid the crowded kids at the ship, Zheng Yuan and Yu Xuan painted the telescope orange. Meanwhile, YUn Xi and Xing Tong painted the recycled paper orange to be used as the pirate flag.

c) About birds.
• As we are going to the Bird Park tomorrow, we watched a little about birds. There are many types of birds. Some could fly while some not. Some are big while some are not. Chickens and ducks can’t fly high while sparrow and eagles fly high. Vultures eat left over animals’ dead body. Dark blue colour peacock is the male peacock. The owl sleeps in the morning and wakes up at night to hunt its food.
• Well, kids are advised to sleep early tonight for the trip.

d) Our performance.
• The kids were overwhelmed especially when we had 4 year- old class as our audience as well as a few teachers too.
• We need to practise a lot and overcome the kids fear. Chia Yen was brave after with some encouragement.
• First, we did the dance, “Following The Leader”, then The Princesses’ Dance and finally Michael Jackson performance.
• Overall, they had grasped the steps but practice would improvised their skill. 

Deepavali

Thursday (04/11/2010)

a) Deepavali
• Deepavali or “The Light Festival” is the reason of our National Public Holiday. The kids said it is the Hindus New Year.
• We talked about the Hindus speciality and slightly compare to other cultures. Why do they light the oil lamps? Many guessed but only Kwong Yong got it correct….yes for praying purpose. The light symbolizes that the good always wins over the evil.
• They have delicious food. The kids guessed curry which is true. There is a lot more such as tosai and cookies.
• They wear beautiful clothes. Chun Kit said they also have Ang Pow but of different colour packet. They have white or red dots on their forehead. On the reason they put on these marks or known as “tikka”, they have to go home and do research as Deepavali is tomorrow.
• Shopping malls will have colourful rice decoration. They have to be very careful not to spill the rice. Jun Yu shared his younger brother’s experience of how he stepped onto the decoration but it was only minor one.

b) Performance practice.
• The kids practised “Following the Leader” Dance. Cikgu Xin Ru watched us. Wee Hong also performed as “Michael Jackson”. It was a fun practice.

The Princessess

Wednesday (10/11/2010)

a) The Princesses
• Individual guidance was given to these five Princesses: Yee Xuan as Snow White, Xing Tong as Cinderella, Natalie as TinkerBell, Chia Yen as Minnie Mouse and Zhe Qing as Princess Tiger Lily (the Red Indian Princess).
• Each of them drew the crowns uniquely. Today, I guided them such as adding glittering, pasting decorative paper or even suggested the patterns. As for Minnie Mouse, her crown was smaller as her mouse ears were considered to occupy left and right of her crown.  They were excited and had their own perception of style.

b) The kids
• The others spent their time to touch up their drawing and colouring of Peter Pan Cartoon Movie.
• Then, they came to assist me with other props. Jun Yu and Zheng Yuan made Captain Hook’s long sword. With just little prompting, they were independent as we had made the short swords previously. Chun Kit, Shawn and Kwong Yong assisted at colouring and cutting out the “skull” logo for the pirates.
• We didn’t do any performance practice. We took a break today

Craft: Crowns

Tuesday (09/11/2010)

a) Crowns
• Discussion: Who wears crowns? There can be formal or informal crowns.
• For purpose of performance, we need crowns for Snow White, Cinderella, Tiger Lily and also Tinker Bell. The other kids could make for their loving parents.

b) Craft: Crowns
• I prepared a few sizes of cardboards and showed the kids steps to make. We discussed about the various patterns. From shapes to more difficult patterns. Example: circles, squares, stars, hearts and etc.
• They drew, coloured and cut the shaped out. Then, pasted to the plain head crown.
• I gave them some coloured paper and they taught of their decoration.
• Individual attention was needed a few kids.

c) Our Audience.
• We invited Huang Lao Shi to take a look at our “Following The Leader” dance and also “Michael Jackson” dance.
• She was smiling watching us and praised the kids. She advised us to practise more for a better performance. The kids were overwhelmed and I had to calm them down. I have to improve my skill at calming down and encouraging them…….oh gosh…….especially having a mixture of 4 and 5 years old at the real concert!  Honestly, I’m enjoying every moment of it as the kids are!

Hindus’ Tiika

Monday (08/11/2010)

a) The Dance Practice.
• It is important to keep practicing so that the kids feel confidence especially after a longer weekend holiday. Another challenge is not having everyone present. Still, the positive spirit must be in the air. 
• The kids got better especially at the end part. I taught them skipping and reminded them to keep marching and smiling.

b) Practice: Peter Pan’s Surprised Party
• We did this practice. The kids suggested to wear their clothes which I allowed. They were having fun.
• I was the emcee and introduced the 8 fashion show participants. The, they were danced little. Followed by Michael Jackson after that. Then, the Captain Hook and pirates came and caught them. They were peter’s baits. On the ship, they were tied ad the pirates were dancing while waiting for Peter. Then, crocodile and octopus were introduced and they danced their ways through. Haaa…….Peter, Tinker Bell and John came. They flew with the music and then they started negotiating with Captain Hook. Captain hook chose to fight. The battle was won over by the good people, of course. Crocodile and octopus were so happy having the pirates as meals. The end!

c) Sharing: Deepavali
• I brought Deepavali kuih as promised last Friday. I gave the kids a little of muruku only as it could be heaty. Zhe Qing shared that Tiika “the dots on Hindus forehead” can be a form of fashion. If they werea vlue, they can have blue tiika or any colour as a decoration.
• Meanwhile, Yun Xin said that her mother told her that red and white tiika have significance of marriage.
• According to my Hindu friends and Wikipedia, red is a tradition for married people as white signifies non-marriage. Today, even non Hindus wear Tiika just like make up.
• Some Hindus even had “earrings” on their nose or belly button which as according to Chun Kit for performance purpose.

Magic

Wednesday (03/11/2010)

a) Magic
• Is there magic? Some said “yes” while some “no”. Basically, there are 2 types of magic. People magician who practise their tricks all the time to be perfect. The other would be fairies if they really exist.
• Who are fairies? Movies and cartoons give us the idea that they could be both females and males. Females are usually known as “fairy” while males as “elf”. I gave example of Mother God Fairy in Cinderella film. There is also “Pinocchio”.
Chun Kit: Are they good or bad?
Teacher: Well, I believe they are good. They reward good people ad teach bad people lessons so that they would change.
b) I am a Magician !
• So, ca you perform magic?
Zhe Qing: Teacher, can I try?
• Everyone stared at Zhe Qing when she stood in front of the class. I requested the kids to close their eyes. Zhe Qing took an eraser ad a magic wand in each hand and hid behind her. Then, when we opened our eyes, she took the magic wand out and “trring” ad suddenly, an eraser appeared on her right hand. The class giggled and eventhough they knew it was a trick, they started practicing among themselves.
• Another was performed by Zheng Yuan. He took a broken rubber band. He said he needed an assistant and Zhi Feng volunteered. First, he held the rubberband with his tiny fingers and asked Zhi Feng to pull the top open end. Suddenly, the rubberband shrunk ad became shorter…wow, “magic”! They went to each table and performed……..hmmmm…….I wonder if we could have more magic tricks…haaaaa!
c) Craft: The Magic Wand
• The kids get to choose either star shape or draw their desired shape. Only Wee Hong decided to have a heart shape. The rest wanted a star shape. They coloured their cardboard front and back as creatively as possible. Then, they took a straw each and glued to the cardboard. Finally, I taught them to decorate using some glittering dust. They started playing with it using their own words. “Pring” Ting” Tong”….haaaa! I thought them, “Abracadabra”……
d) Michael Jackson
• What could be more excited then to watch our very own Wee Hong danced like the late Michael. The kids were amazed and said he danced beautifully. He has always liked dancing and I thought he has a great talent!

Game: Tinker Bell's wand

Tuesday (02/11/2010)

a) Game: Tinker Bell's wand.
* The kids sat in a big circle. I showed them a magic wand made by myself. Immediately, they said they wanted to make it too. Chun Kit even asked me to perform a magic trick performance. I told them that I know of none but willing to learn. I am still awaiting the kids' for any magic tricks especially from Jun Yu as he is really interested at it.
* We chanted a rhyme and a kid would walk around the circle with the magic wand in his hand. When we stopped chanting, that kid would place behind a friend and tap his or her head. The second kid would have to stand up and chase the first kid. Meanwhile, the first kid would have to sit at a vacant place. If the first kid is being touched, he has to stand like a statue. They loved the game!

b) Continuation: My picture.
* The kids continued their drawing and it has to be completed because it will be their book cover.
Teacher: We have watched Peter Pan's cd and also read storybooks brought by friends. How are we suppose to tell our stories to the others?
Qian Joe: Through acting.
Teacher: But people would forget easily after that.
Chun Kit: Let's make a storybook.
* That was a good idea. Thus, I started snapping the kids' personal photo before wearing their costumes. That would be the casts.
* I sketched the pictures of Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinker Bell, crocodile and also Captain Hook。 Some even took the storybook pages and drew from observing it. Jun Yu also tried and later discovered that tracing from the picture was also an idea. :)
* I requested them to colour either completely or colour the frame only.

c) Our dance.
Zheng Yuan: Do we need to practise every day?
* I took the opportunity to explain that until we grasp the basic steps, then; we can do it on alternate days. At that time, we would start focusing on our musical drama.
* They were quite good and we even modified our dance steps together to suit the song. Bravo!

My favourite scene.

Monday (1/11/2010)

a) My favourite scene.
* We had finished watching Peter Pan cartoon movie. We discussed about our favourite parts. Among:
Qian Joe: I liked the part Captain Hook battled with crocodile.
Shawn: Me too.
Chun Kit: I like the crocodile music.
Yun Xin: I like seeing Wendy, John, Michael, TinkerBell and Peter flying to Never Never Land.
Xing Tong: I like seeing TinkerBell because she is pretty.
Zheng Yuan: I like to eat Captain Hook.
Teacher: Haa...because you are acting as the crocodile.
Jun Yu: I like eating Captain Hook because I am the octopus.
× the second chapter of Never Never Land featured the octopus instead of the crocodile.
Zhe Qing: I like Wendy because she is pretty.
Xiang Wei: I like seeing the pirates battling with Peter Pan.
Teacher: I like seeing how the strong Captain hook cried like a baby asking Mr Smee for help when the crocodile came near the ship......
Class: haaa。。。。!

b) My picture.
* The kids recorded what they like onto the paper. I showed them steps to draw easy pictures of Peter Pan, Wendy, TinkerBell, Captain Hook, the crocodile and also the octopus.
* The 5 years old were more independent. We still needed to continue tomorrow for a more complete picture with colour.

c) Our dance.
* We continued with the dance trying from first step to the final step. We did some modification as to suit the length of song and most importantly, it is fun for the kids.

Peter Pan’s suit.

Friday (29/10/2010)

a) Tzu Chi
 The Buddhist Tzu Chi Association came to collect the bamboo coin containers given to kids last March. Those coins were poured into a beautiful pot and it eventually overflew when I being the last candidate, poured it in. The kids were overwhelmed. In fact, Tzu Chi showed us a short documentary about poor kids in China urban. They sometimes write with pencil lead. And, they only have a pencil throughout the entire yea. Their lunch? Only a slice of bread to be shared among 3 siblings. They only drank hot water sharing from a small cup. They walked to school some as far as from Klang to KL. Would we do that in Malaysia? The kids were extremely quiet while watching the film and suddenly, we felt extremely blessed to be in Malaysia with our loved ones. Thank you mum and dad.
 Then, the Red Bean class performed a “Recycling” Hokkien song which they would perform on concert day. They were so good and I took them as a good example when explaining the performance rules to my class.

b) Peter Pan’s suit.
Teacher: How can we make Peter’s suit?
Zhi Feng: We can sew.
Kwoong Yong: We can pick leaves from the garden and paste on the t-shirt.
 We followed Kwong Yong’s idea and so marched to the garden to pick and plucked some leaves. Looking around the school compound, we only saw pandan leaves and the Jackfruit leaves to be plucked. However, we were careful not to injure the tree and plant.
 In the class, I showed the kids how we could make a t-shirt out of newspaper. We wanted to compare if the newspaper t-shirt will look better than a green t-shirt. Chun Kit said he would bring his green pants on Monday and we shall decide by then.
 The kids were given double sided tape to paste onto the leaves and then onto the newspaper shirt. It was a great challenge for them to peel off the double sided tape cover but most of them managed.

c) Our dance.
 We continued with our dance, “Following The Leader”. This time, the kids did from the top until the turning around part. From here the 2 rows have to march in different directions and form a V-shape pattern. Then, they hopped and danced 3 different actions. Finally, they skipped in pairs to the centre of the stage and just at the end of the song, they posed differently as in photography session. We still need to practise for consistent rhythm.

Our Story

Wednesday (27/10/2010)

a) Our Dance.
* We continued with the dance. Today's third step was more challenging with kids pairing with their partner and turning around and clapping. They would do that for 4 rounds. Overall, they had remembered the steps except the rhythm is not neat yet. Furthermore, a few kids really neede discipline reminder to participate.

b) Our Story
* To give the kids the overall idea of how can a team produce a role-play or movie. First, a script followed by choosing casts and also the necessary props. Then, the Director will guide them with their actings. So, I will be the Director but we decide the story together.
* We are throwing a surprised birthday party for Peter Pan in Disneyland. The residents including Minnie Mouse, Dumbo, Michael Jackson, Cinderella and Ultraman walked around to do a simple fashion show. Then, they watched Michael performed for a while before being attacked by Captain Hook and his pirates. They were tied and brought to the ship. Then, the pirates started were talking about peter pan wondering if he would save his friends. Of course, he came and he was with Tinker Bell. They fought and fought and finally, Captain Hook fell into the creek and crocodile was very happy to gobble Captain Hook and the pirates.

The Hat Quill

Friday (22/10/2010)

a) Making The Quill
• A few kids came to me saying that, “I don’t have a quill at home.”
• Thus, we learnt to make a quill out from the cardboard.
• Each kicd was given a rectangle paper. They folded it into two and reopened it so to have the middle line. Then, they drew a semi circle on the line. Then, they coloured it with the colour of their choice. Some were colourful, some preferred a simple one. Then, they pasted the quill with glittering purple and silver paper as to give the effect of a hairy quill. Then, they pasted onto their hat and were excited being Peter pan.

b) Review.
• We reviewed about Peter pan the cartoon movie. The Red Indian chief had caught the Lost Children thinking that they took her daughter, Princess Tiger Lily away. Meanwhile, Peter pan and Wendy were at the Mermaid Lagoon and saw Captain Hook capturing Princess Tiger Lily. He quickly saved her intelliegently. He used his echo to trick the pirates.
• The Red Indian was so happy that he had a little campfire party to celebration his daughter’s safety. He also welcomed Peter pan and the lost children as new friends. Meanwhile, captain Hook tricked Tinker Bell easily as she was jealous of Wendy. Tinker bell showed Captain Hook Peter Pan’s home place. Tinker bell made Hook promised her not to harm Peter Pan. Will Captain Hook hold to his promise? To be continued….

Peter Pan's Hat

Thursday (21/10/2010)

a) Treasure hunt
After recapping the song of “Folowing The Leader” while marching with fun, I wrote a question on the board。
“ Would you like to go to Never Never Land?” It is an invitation but the guests (the kids) need to hunt for a treasure before going there.
* They had to search for 6 scrolls of letters tied with a golden thread. 2 were in our classroom, 1 in phonics, 2 at the school hall and 1 in the canteen.
* They were told to be as quiet as can be so that the pirates would not track them for their treasure. The kids were very obedient and they were so excited. Chun Kit found it in the treasure chest, Zhi Feng one under the chair, Yun Xin found one behind the picture and Wee Hong found one near the staircase while Qian Joe found one stuck to the long dragon model.

b) The clue instruction.
* The kids rearranged the words and it sounded, "You must make a quill hat". Each kid must make a hat in order to visit Never never Land.

c) The hat craft.
* Each kid was given a rectangle cardboard. They folded into half and creased hard. Then, they reopened the cardboard to fold both ends to the centre similar to a plane craft. Only Natalie, Xiang Wei, Zhi Feng needed prompting.
* Then, they pasted with cellophanetape and started putting onto their head.
* Each table was given brushes, plates and green poster colour. The kids were advised not to add too much water as the cardboard would get soaked and torn easily. They painted with determination and really enjoyed themselves. I advised them to paint twice to produce a better looking hat.

d) The quill.
* The kids were advised to look for a quill at home so that they could attcah to the hat. Otherwise, we would make the quill tomorrow. To be continued......

Hand Shadow Play

Wednesday (20/10/2010)

a) I am a storyteller.
On Monday, I asked the kids to think of their stories involving the butterfly and other characters. Only 3 took the initiative. They were Yun Xin, Zheng Yuan and Chun Kit. Yun Xin \shared about butterfly being friend witrh Doraemon. She really tried speaking English the whole lesson. Zheng Yuan told us a story about the hungry butterfly who ate a lot of food. Then, I added the character of a hungry bird which wanted to eat the butterfly and later saved by Tinkerbell. Chun Kit told us his story about his caterpillar and Peter Pan.
The kids took turn to be the emcee. They enjoyed it. The other kids were inspired to tell their own story from the spot. For being initiative, I rewarded everyone. However, for the 3 most initiative kids, they were awarded with jelly.

b) Hand Shadow.
I turned off the lights and we talked a little about the shadow. With light anywhere, we can see shadows. There are a few ways to play with shadow. Shadow theatre, hand shadow and body shadow. Thus, we started practising hand shadow.
First, I taught them the bird shadow. Then, the crocodile shadow. Wee Hong came to teach us the peacock. Zhi Feng taught us the snake. Qian Joe taught us the cat.

c) Yun Xin’s shadow book.
We looked through at Yun Xin’s book. Then, we played a game called, “Please guess me. Who am I?”
The kids took turn to come to me and choose a shadow pattern. Then they stood beside the lamp behind the white cloth and played with their hands. The other kids guessed.
Among: Jun Yu as an owl, Chia Yen as a woodpecker, Kwong Yong as an eagle, Shawn as a dinosaur. The other shadow figures were a rabbit, a peacock, a snake and an elephant.

Our Sock Puppet

Monday (18/10/2010)

a) Storybook: Am I as good as I look?
 Kwong Yong brought this book to share with us.
 A story about a baby snail who thought that it looked ugly with a heavy and hard shell to carry everywhere. Also, its eyes are not on the face but on the tentacles.
 It met many insects and envied them. The ant has 6 legs and could walk swiftly. The fish could swim in the water. The butterfly could fly high.
 Finally, it saw a tortoise and asked if the tortoise would like to be other animals. The tortoise said “No” as it felt that its shell could protect it from harm. It also kept it warm.
 As the little snail was thinking, it felt so sad and nobody could understand it. At this moment, a cat was chasing a butterfly. As it could fly high, it saw the slow snail which crawled very slowly. Finally, the snail got panicked and screamed to the little ant, “If only I could walk quickly like you, then I would be safe!” The ant screamed back, “Hide in your shell!”. The snail quickly listened to its advice and then was safe from the cat’s hunger. 
Moral: Everyone is special. When we feel sad, many small troubles will look very big. Thus, talk over our problems to parents and good friends. Listen and think wisely.

b) Hand and sock puppet.
 We recapped various puppets we did previously. They were stick puppets, finger puppets. There is also a string puppet which I made and there are also school hand puppets.
 Only a few brought socks for this activity As for the rest, I told them that if they still want to make sock puppets, then they can still bring it to school. Thus, who didn’t bring would use paper to make into hand puppet.
 For this stage, a lot of kids still need guidance. Thus, we did butterfly for this activity as it also relates to our story of Tinker Bell in Peter Pan.
 The butterfly parts: face, body, 6 legs, wings and antenna.
 I prepared a few recycled items and the kids could use them to be as creative as possible. Example: wire thread, straws, cloth, pieces of short ribbons. They were advised to use them wisely and share with their friends.
 Those who used paper would roll the paper and paste them. So that their hand would be inside the paper. Those who used socks, learnt to get use to the hand movement.
 Next, the kids drew the butterfly parts on a piece of cardboard. They coloured and cut them. Next, they used double sided tape to paste them. As for the eyes and antennas, they could use wire thread. As for the six legs, they could use short straws.
 Eventually, their puppets were ready and some started queuing behind the puppet theatre and tried to play with them.

c) Homework Task: My story.
• The kids were asked to think of a story about their butterfly character. They are welcomed to mix with their stick and finger puppets made last 2 weeks. They can also draw new characters and I will provide them straws to make as puppets.

d) Song: Following The Leader
• This is a song from Peter Pan’s Cartoon Movie and it is a very fun song. The kids were having a challenging time to sing the chorus but they turned out well. I aim to choose an interesting song for the kids to perform. I still need them to hint me about their most favourable one. 

Our Puppet Theatre Craft

Friday (15/10/2010)

a) My sample
* I brought in a simple puppet theatre made by myself. Then, a few kids volunteered to come forward to perform a short puppet story. They were Zhi feng, Chun Kit, Xing Tong, Yun Xuan and Yun Xin. They chose their favourite stick and finger puppets. They told about Captain Hook and Peter Pan's adventure. With this, the kids had an idea how we can make use of the puppet theatre.

b) Little Carpenters.
* We thanked Chun kit and Zhe Qing for bringing boxes for our puppet theatre craft. We discussed how ad what to do. 4 kids volunteered making the roof. They were Xing Tong, Yun Xin, Qian Joe and Yu Xuan. They drew a lot of hills similar to a castle shape and coloured them nicely. Jun Yu ad Zheng yuan helped to decorate the theatre wall. Zheng Yuan cut pieces of colour paper while Jun Yu pasted them. I was very happy to see Jun Yu being so serious at this. :) Wee Hong and Kwong Yong decided to decorate the inner part of the theatre. Meanwhile, the 4 year old kids preferred to draw pictures as wall decoartions. They drew beautifully. Xiang Wei asked if he could add lanterns to the theatre which I welcomed his idea. The others assisted at decoarating the front view of the box. That included the curtain and also its ribbon. Meawhile, Chun Kit preferred to decoarte the extra box into a treasure chest. He made a skull and bone picture the other day which he was happy to paste onto the box. Some kids inquired about the items to be kept in the chest. They were quite interested about the pirates as our phonics lesson is currently about "The Ship and Pirates".

c) Enquiries.
Chun Kit: Teacher, how can we go into this small box and perform?
Teacher: This is a small theatre for puppets. If we really are going to perform, we would have to get onto a big stage and have the backgrounds and props ready.
Zhe Qing: Teacher, when are we making our sock puppet?
Teacher: Only when everyone brings a clean sock. After playing with different puppets and activities, thenn we can decide on our desired stage performance. :)

KLCC Petroscience

Tuesday(12/10/2010)

a) The journey
• The kids got so excited. They sat with their partners in the bus, chatting and luahing non-stop. Some shared their stories, Zhe Qing played with her handkerchief making different crafts such as flowers etc.
• We reached KLCC Twin Towers at 10 am and played at the playground for about 45 minutes. Then, we went for lunch at 11.10 at KFC. Yee Xuan and Soon Yu were having vegetarian meals. A toy would be given to them in school.

b) The Space Ball.
• Kids queued up to aboard the “gondola” which looked like a Spaceship ball bringing us through a dark tunnel to reach its science centre. The tunnel was like a rainforest…..dark and mysterious.
• At the first phase of science centre, we saw lots of game and experiment stations. There were shadow plays, reflection play, the mini contruction play and a little lorry for kids to drive pretentiously.
• Secod phase was the Dinosaur Age. They introduced the soil and how the dead animals decomposted as petrol.Suddenly, there was athunderstorm. Our helicopter had to fly through the thick dark clouds. The helicopter became very shaky. Fortunately, we embraced it successfully. As we laded on the Helipad, the helicopter door opened and we went to a platform model. The kids saw the petrol digger, its machines, the colour of the petrol. They also saw the crews’ cabin and brief lifestyle.

c) More stations.
• There were many Intelligence games. Among: The handball speed game, Lego Race game, the Light game, the jumping speed game, F1 drive. Next, we went to the 3D-Theatre movie about Dinky the Dinosaur. It featured the friendship between a meat eater and plant eater dinosaur.
• Our last phase was near the theatre. There were blocks station, keyboard station, magic trick station and finally “Print yourself” a postcard” station.
• Then, we queued up to get aboard the Space Ball. There was a long queue. So, we started inging with “Friends are Special”. Then, “Rasa Sayang, Burung Kakak Tua, The Rainbow song and finally, a Mandarin song: you yong de ren”. It was just awesome any many people were smiles looking at us. So, parents; your kids are really magical! Thank you.

My Finger Puppet.

Monday (11/10/2010)
a) Finger Puppet
 I brought in a few drawing books. They displayed step by step drawing of cartoon characters. I have also drawn a few Peter Pan characters on the paper to guide them. My instruction was to draw a picture of person and if time permits, they can draw any animal pictures by searching through the books.
 I drew circles as Peter Pan’s face and extended to his face features, his hat, his body and also his pants and legs. I drew another simpler version to guide the 4-year old kids.
 The girls requested that I draw Wendy or rather a girl character. I used step by step method to guide them.

b) Drawing time.
 Each kid was given a small piece of paper. They drew their desired pictures. I would say that they drew rather independently. Only a few kids needed my initial prompting. They were Soon Yu, Xiang Wei, Yu Xuan, Natalie and Shawn. The others were surprisingly determined.

c) Rolling the paper.
 We tried using recycld materials to make our crafts. Thus, those finished drawing; took a small piece of cardboard and rolled. Then, they pasted with cellophane tape. Next, they attached their pictures to the rolled cardboard. They were excited to bring home. I would only allow them afterI laminate those pictures. They were encouraged to make their own stories.

d) Discussion.
* The kids liked the idea of making a puppet house. However, I needed their co-operation to bring big boxes (if any). Oterwise, we would have to combine 2 small boxes. This puppet house will be very useful for the kids’ creativeness and exploration.

Our Puppet Story。

Thursday (07/10/2010)

Vocabulary: Puppet.
a) Organising files.
l The kids were given their worksheets together with parents’ letters. Then, I sealed the plastic holder for them before they place into their bags.

b) Puppets.
Teacher: What dis we learn yesterday? How did I tell the story?
l I used “puppet” method to delivery the story.
l There are various puppets. Example: Stick puppets, finger puppets, hand puppets, sock puppets. I asked the kids to go home and think of ways to create puppets. The cartoon characters which the kids coloured yesterday were laminated into puppets. Only pictures which were properly coloured were laminated. I distributed to the kids and they excitedly pasted onto their straws.
l Then, I introduced some other puppets of the school. Example: the Octopus hand puppet, the cow hand puppet, the duck hand puppet, the tiger finger puppet, the bear finger puppet.
l Then, I let the kids feel the puppets and experiment with them….wow!!....was their exclamation…haaa!

c) The puppet stage.
* Chun Kit: Teacher, we should carry a table onto the stage.
* Kwong Yong: Teacher, what about 3 tables on the floor surrounding the stage.
* Thus, I got a few kids to pushed the stage slightly to the middle of the class. We tried Kwong Yong’s method. Well, the kids could see me or even their friend hiding behind the table. Thus, we tried Chun Kit’s method. It worked. Then, I laid 3 a big cloth over the table so that the kids can’t see the puppeteer. When, a few kids stepped onto the stage, it wasn’t high enough for them. Thus, I added 3 baskets onto the table and it was more comfortable for the kids to place their arms on the table.

d) My simple story.
* I took a few puppet characters and created a simple short story.
* I brought in Captain Hook who was fighting with Peter Pan. Just then, an octopus came by. The class immediately sang the Phonics song “The Ship”… haaaa! The octopus said it wanted to eat Captain Hook who quickly fled away. Tinker Bell rescued Wendy and the lost children. Everyone laughed at Captain Hook and clapped at the end of my puppet show.
* The kids were divided into groups of three. They can choose any charcters they want and create any simple short story. Yee Xuan’s group talked about the octopus, duck and Tinker Bell. Chun Kit’s group talked about Peter Pan’s adventure with the Red Indians. They also sang the “Red Indian” song. Qian Joe’s group talked about Peter Pan and 2 Tinker Bells. They sang the song “Friends are special”. Jun Yu’s group was about the octopus, Peter Pan and Wendy.
* Though the kids’ story were quite messy, but it was a great inspiration as they ask for more.

A Puppet Story-Telling.

Wednesday (06/10/2010)

Vocabulary: story-telling, characters.
a) A Puppet Story-telling.
* I laminated a few important characters and pasted with a straw each. Then, I covered a table with a cloth and hid behind the table. The characters were: Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinker bell, Captain hook, pirates, the lost children and the hungry crocodile.
* In fact, some of the kids came to help coloured them at corner playing. They turned out beautifully.

b) Recap and continuation.
* Today, the kids also paid a fee but it raised up to RM2 as the kids were excited about the story. :)
* I recapped the story using the puppet.
* Continuation: Captain Hook was chased away by the crocodile. He was afraid of the crocodile because it bit off its right arm in the past and found it delicious. Thus, the crocodile was always eager to snap Captain Hook's other body part.
* Captain Hook and his pirates did not give up. Captain Hook had another idea. This time, he trapped Tinker Bell by arousing her jealousy of pretty Wendy. Fearing that peter pan would dislike her, she agreed to assist Captain Hook. She assisted him to trap the Lost Boys and also the darling children. When Peter pan could not find them, he called Tinker Bell. Her face showed that she had done something bad. Peter pan was curious and forced her to tell the truth. She revealed her evil doing and Peter Pan chased her away for being angry. Peter Pan immediately went to rescue them on the Pirate Ship. Meanwhile, realizing of her mistake, Tinker bell wanted to remedy for what she did. She flew to the pirate Ship and also tried rescuing them. Of course, Peter pan came in time just to save Wendy from jumping off the plank. Peter fought with Captain Hook. Both fought aggressively and Peter tricked him to the top of the ship. Finally, Captain heard the “tick tock” sound of the crocodile and he started shiver…….aaahhhh! Peter forced Captain hook to jump and as he jumped crocodile waited for him with mouth ajar. However, Captain hook used his hook to save himself. Ahhh……..everyone was watching. With all his might, Captain Hook swam quickly and save himself.

c) Class decoration.
Zhe Qing said that the class should be decorated like Peter Pan’s story.
Thus, each kid chose their preferred choice of picture and started colouring. I told them that if they coloured nicely with love, I shall laminate their pictures. It would last and also they can choose to make it as puppets.

Story-telling

Monday (04/10/2010)

a) Story-telling.
* Jun Yu gave me a book and told me that he would like to tell us a story. I was very proud of his effort. The title was "In The Garden". Everyone sat down quietly while listening to his rather soft voice. :)
* he read very well with little prompting from me. At first round, we listened to his reading. At second reading, the kids read after me. Then, I started sketching a garden with different insects on the board. Kids were so excited that they started talking about each insect.

b) "In The Garden".
* Caterpillars are found on leaves. They eat lots of leaves.
Qian Joe: Then they would change into a cocoon.
Xing Tong: Then, into a butterfly.
*Ants are found on the ground.
* They have six legs.
Jun Yu: The beetles are so big, how can ants carry them?
Teacher: Ants are very co-operative, they travel in a troupe of army.
- Ants eat just about anything.
* Worms are found in the ground.
Zheng Yuan: Worms make the plants grow more healthily.
- The holes made will allow Oxygen to flow in and gardeners need not worry to continue digging.
Shawn: Worms are scary.
- Actually, worms eat up carcass or dead bodies and add fertilizer into the soil. Otherwise, the Earth will be filled with carcasses......oh gosh!! Thank you, worms!
* Grasshoppers are found on the grass.
- They can hop far and fly too. There are big and small ones.
* Bees are found in a hive.
Jun Yu: The big ones are wasps.
Chun Kit: Be careful, they can sting people.
Yun Xin: We must see the doctor immediately.
- When bees sting us, they will also die because they can part with their sting at the abdomen. People at least could quickly seek a doctor’s treatment.
* Spiders are found on a web.
Shawn: Are spiders sticky?
- No, they aren’t. However, their webs are sticky as to trap their prey as food. Some insects fly and get caught there. Example: flies, moths, cockroaches. Spiders also catch their preys themselves. Some spiders are poisonous.
* Lots of insects are found in the garden.

c) Body Movement.
l The kids chose the characters they wanted to be. Among: Xing Tong as a flower, Yee Xuan as a caterpillar, Yun Xin and Yee Xuan as the ant, Qian Joe as a donut, Kwong Yong and Shawn as bees while Zhi Feng as a tree. Jun Yu, Zheng Yuan, Soon Yu, Xiang Wei as spiders and the rest pretended to be a big house.
l Qian Joe was creative as he unfolded himself as a donut. Wee Hong as the worm and Shawn as the rabbit. J The kids were enthusiastic.
l Later, we performed as a class playing the “freeze” game. This is to allow the kids having the idea of various movements. Example: Be a butterfly……they will fly and “freeze”! Be a spider……they will crawl and “freeze”!

d) Little Disneyland Castle.
l The kids chose their duties. Qian Joe and Xing Tong wanted to make a fence surrounding the castle. Theothers wanted to cut their coloured pictures and placed as a parade within the castle. Chia Yen was engrossed to make ice-cream. Kwong Yong led the kids to make Disneyland flags. Shawn laughed happily seeing their flags saying it looked like “MERDEKA”. Haaa……in a way, yes!

Peter Pan

Tuesday (05/10/2010)

a) Welcome.
· Kwong Yong brought a storybook about a snail’s adventure. Yee Xuan brought a book about bunnies. It was a crafty storybook. Yesterday, I told the class that we would start Peter Pan. So, I gave them a choice to vote on which book they want to learn about today. More than 10 kids voted Peter Pan. Ay….ay…ay……class!
· We created a simple situation whereby our story-telling session is like a cinema. The kids queued up and each had to pay me RM1 as a fee to enter the story-telling Cineplex. Wow! The taller ones sat on the chairs while the shorter ones in front.

b) Peter Pan.
· I didn’t have the storybook. However, I printed colouring pages from the web and compiled them into a storybook. It’s quite good. J
· First, the characters were introduced.
· Wendy the sister of John and youngest brother, Michael. They are the children of Darling Family. Their parents were out for a party. These were happy kids who always imagined the adventure of Peter Pan. Peter Pan had been peeping them all the while without their knowledge. One day, his shadow flew into the room not wanting to co-operate with Peter. Peter had Tinker bell, the magical fairy to help searching. They were clumsy and the noise woke the kids up. Peter saw his shadow and chased it. It took some glue to stick but the kids laughed. Wendy volunteered to sew for him. Seeing her ability, peter invited them to Never-Never Land. The living beings there will never grow old and are always happy. John and Michael were excited but Wendy thought of the responsibility. Peter lured her with mermaids, pirates and magic and immediately, with Tinker Bell’s magical dust; they started floating and flying into the sky. Nana, their dog was barking as if it wanted to join them. Never-Never Land was very far. They had to travel pass the space to get there.
· When they reached there, they saw a wide blue ocean and some mermaids pulled Wendy’s dress wanted her to join in. Wendy was very pretty. At Peter’s home, he introduced his Lost Boys (6 of them) to them. Yeewww…..they were very dirty, smelly and naughty too. They wanted Wendy to be their mother. Wendy said “No” and they started sobbing. Feeling sorry for them, Wendy promised to tell them stories. Immediately, the Lost Boys loved their new guests. J
· The next day, peter showed the Darling kids around the Island. He told them to be careful with pirates especially Captain Hook. They went to visit their friends, the Red Indian colony. They were happy to see Peter and friends. Captain Hook had an idea to kidnap the Red Indian Princess. He tied her and placed her on a big rock. Captain Hook also tied the Lost Boys at the Red Indian Camp. Luckily, Peter Pan and Wendy peeped at him. Suddenly, Peter flew high in the sky and scared Captain Hook. He fought with him. Then, the hungry crocodile appeared. Captain was afraid of it and started to lose thoughts. He shivered. Peter Pan quickly rescued Princess Lily, the Red Indian Princess. Meanwhile, the crocodile chased Captain Hook who swam quickly to escape. The Lost Boys laughed at that sight. The kids in the class too. As I stopped telling the story, the kids pleaded me to continue. I promised I would tomorrow as it was time for playground.

Disneyland Castle

Thursday (30/10/2010)

a) Disneyland Castle.
· We invited Foo Soon from next door for 10 minutes to share with us his experience in Disneyland, Hong Kong. We were very glad because he had snapped photos and enlarged them. Among, he snapped photos with Snow White, Barbie Dolls, Cinderella and also Mickey Mouse. He also brought 2 files with Disneyland Castle. Woohhh……was the kids’ exclaimed! It is amazing. Foo Soon said that there were parades, there were performances such as singinging and dancing sessions, the mascots were as tall as teacher. Foo Soon said he also saw the blue ant mascot shaking hands and taking photos with many people. There were shoppings, swimming pools, parks and hotels. He said he was very very happy.
· Zhi Feng also shared his photos of Disneyland with the class. We saw a colourful ferry there and there were a few statues including Dumbo. He also showed us photos of KLIA airport.
· Yun Xin and wee Hong asked why they couldn’t just drive car there. I drew the world map and showed them that there is sea and ocean. Either ship or planes could cross and travel to another country. However, Singapore is linked to Malaysia with a bridge.
· Many people have yet being to Disneyland because of the distance and their free time was my explanation to kids. However, we can learn about it from television, video clip or listen to friends’ sharings.

b) 3D Castle.
· The kids were enthusiastic about the castle and we decided to make a castle for the cartoon characters we discussed yesterday. Cartoons which do not belong to Disney such as Ultraman can always visit his friends there.:)
· As we had been doing a lot of craft work before, I thought let’s try a more challenging task whereby kids have to assemble small parts of 3D puzzles into a big castle. Thus, team work is very important and they also have to be able to read the numbers.
· The kids chose their partners, some I paired them up so that the better one can guide the other partner.
· Each pair was given a board of puzzle and they started pushing the parts out from the big piece. Then, they placed the small parts into a bowl. Only Yun Xin knew how to assemble. The others I had to guide them. Half of the class were able to identify the numbers and and fixed them to the gap. Thus, this would be a good board game for kids at home to challenge their motor skill, mathematical skill and patience.
· About 30 minutes later, I gave the kids some cartoon characters to colour as to add onto our Disneyland Castle. Meanwhile, the kids were called two by two for guidance to assemble the castle. We actually made up almost 85% of the castle. Wow! The kids actually got a lot of guidance from Zhe Qing and Yun Xin. We shall continue with the ending touch up tomorrow.

Little Disneyland

Friday (01/10/2010)

a) Walt Disney
l Walter Disney was the founder of Disneyland and also the creator of Mickey Mouse. When he was a boy, he always helped his parents in the farm. He enjoyed drawing and sketching in his free time. When he was 16, he applied for the position in the army force but was rejected because he was underage. Then, he got a job as an ambulance driver. His ambulance was pasted with all his drawings. Then, he went to Hollywood with very little money to pursue his dreams. He was assisted by his older brother. Walt Disney introduced cartoons and then built Disneyland as he believed that this is a happy land for all. Before he passed away, he set up California Institute of Arts hoping to share his knowledge and experience with the younger generation. Nickey Mouse was the pioneer of Disneyland and when coloured production was introduced, the original black and white Mickey Mouse cartoon series became more interesting with colours….wow!

b) Mickey mouse cartoon.
l Yun Xin shared with us her DVD. Thus, I turned on this first short chapter as Mickey Mouse and Friends introduction.
l Mickey was the host of a Christmas Party. He invited almost every character of Disneyland including “Beauty and the Beast, Pooh, Donald Duck, The Lion King, Snow White, Goofy” and many more.
l The first episode featured Mickey mouse sharing the story of Donald Duck and his nephews. His nephews were busy preparing a Snowman for a contest. They made it so beautifully. However, Uncle Donald Duck was skating and accidentally hit and destroyed the snowman. The nephews were so angry that they started playing tricks on their uncle. It was funny but without adults’ guidance; kids can easily learn the tricks and practiced on others.

c) Let’s vote!
Teacher: What would you like to perform?
Class: Songs, dance, drama, fashion show.
Wow, I guessed the kids need to try on every aspect before deciding what is really their passion for the year end concert. Then, the kids voiced out their desired story to learn about. Among, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Cinderella, Toy Story and Winnie The Pooh. Kids were given two voting chances. The results: 10 chose Peter Pan, 9 chose Dumbo, 3 chose Cinderella, 5 chose Toy Story and 2 chose Winnie The Pooh.
Then, we thought of the thematic title. Some suggested “Music, Dance and Perform!”, “Magic Kids” and “Little Disneyland”. Majority voted “Little Disneyland”. Woh….woh….woh!

· Woohhh….. so many cartoon characters. The kids even started showing me their clothes pictures including “Pooh, Spongebob, Tom and Jerry, Ultraman and Ben 10”.

Wee Hong: Disneyland. Zhi Feng: I have been to Disneyland. I can bring the photos.
Wee Hong: There were Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse Mascots and I took photos with them.

· Everyone was so excited because most of us have not been there including myself but we can learn about them. Qian Joe asked if Foo Soon could also bring his Disneyland photos to share with the class. Of course, Foo Soon agreed.
b) Treasure Hunt.
· As we are still unsure which story to venture into, thus we are now learning to know the other Disney cartoon characters. To play this game, I had pasted 10 scrolls of cartoon pictures in Phonics room. We were unable to play at the hall as there was Wushu class.
· The kids were grouped in pairs of their choice. Then they crept quietly into Phonics class to hunt the treasure scrolls.
· Some were under the tables, under the chairs, behind the curtains, on the high wall and etc. Everyone was so happy. They opened the scroll and shared with the class on the stage. There were characters such as “Nemo”, “Little Mermaid”, “Cinderella”, “Pooh” and also “Donald Duck”.
c) Hiding the treasure.
· Each kid took a paper randomly and rolled the paper. Then, they bind the scroll with a green binder. The class was divided into 2 groups. Some chose to hide in Phonics class, some in the classroom. The rules were: i) waiting patiently while friends hid the treasure, ii) No peeping, iii) Hunting them quietly with focus.
· After discovering them, we talked a little about the characters.
· Yun Xin was so excited about her DVD that she wanted to share with her school friends at 5.30 during Watching Time.

· Zheng Yuan brought his ABC book which consisted Power Rangers’ picture. The kids were excited and I reminded them that we need to have more resources of books, posters or even CDs before making decision on where to start. Furthermore, they couldn’t tell me the story of Power Rangers.
· The kids were excited to choose the colourful costumes. Their choices are not restricted.
· Yun Xin was excited to sing us a song, “The Rainbow Song”. Zhe Qing continued by playing piano of Rainbow Song. Chia Yen requested her friends to accompany her to sing. This time, they sang with ribbon props.
· Wee Hong was enthusiastic to perform as Michael Jackson. He put on a black suit and danced beautifully…..wooooh!

· Finally, I turned on the song, “Zip A Dee Doo Dah” and the kids walked on the stage fancifully for fashion show!
d) A Brief Discussion
· I consistently reminded them to find resources of what we would like to learn.
· It’s indeed an exciting theme to venture into!

Monday (27/09/2010)
a) Brainstorming: Performance.
Teacher: What is performance? Have any of your family members performed before?
Chun kit: I saw Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse performing at Disneyland.
Zhi Feng: They were very funny. They also have fancy fashions.
Devin: We can change from a clock to a house.
Jun Yu: I saw magic show in Taiwan. There were also many games there.
Teacher: If inviting people to participate in a Game Show, that could be performance. However, Funfair is not. Well done!
Wee Hong: We can dance. Animals can perform too.
Qian Joe: We can act like cartoons.
Wei Jeen: We can sing.
Yun Xin: Some people tell stories.
Xing Tong: Can we do phonics songs?

Thus, performance include fashion show, singing, dancing, acting in drama, jokes, story-telling, magic show, musical performance and Black Light among others.
c) Decoration.
Teacher: We need to do some spring cleaning and decorations.
In the morning, the kids managed to do spring cleaning for half of the class. Thus, we continued the other half.
Among, we carried the baskets of toys from the school porch after being dried under hot sun. Then, we organized some of the recycled items properly. Sometimes, we the kids brought some recycled items and because we had extras, we kept them in boxes. However, they took up some space. To avoid messiness, we brought them to the store room.
Some kids took down the previous decoration from Notice Board.
Some kids assisted to label the items in the class such as whiteboard, fan, radio, shelf, Notice Board, toys, English, Bahasa Melayu and Chinese storybooks.
d) The Stage.
Teacher: Where do we perform?

They didn’t know the name. It is called “the stage”.
Devin: We can hop into the bus and get to the Hokkien Association stage.
Wei Jeen: We can always perform downstairs.
Zhe Qing: We can make a stage from chairs.
Yun Xin: We can make our own stage from tables.
Qian Joe: They are dangerous.
Finally we found lower tables and worked together to make a big stage. We labeled it. Some kids assisted to sweep the floor.
Every kid has to think of what they can perform and to share with the class. They are encouraged to bring any storybooks or CDS and then, we would decide which topic we will venture into first. Wow!

My Family Tree Craft

Thursday (23/09/2010)

a) Flashcards
l We recapped the words learnt and also checked with the kids their definitions.
l Then, we sang our favourite song, “Friends Are Special”.

b) My Family Tree.
l As some kids went for holidays 2 weeks ago, I had a challenging time to continue this craft project. The family relationship is like a tree because, it grows and some parts of it will eventually die. People will grow, age and die too while babies will grow up to be children. The cycle continues.
l I introduced vocabulary: grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, sister, brother and me. Jun Yu’s photos were taken as examples.

c) My Family Tree Craft
l The kids took a paper each with a huge tree on it. They started pasting their family pictures drawn previously. They were all on “Heart” shapes. Only a few kids understood the instructions of arranging the pictures according to protocols. Among: Zhe Qing, Yun Xin, Xing Tong, Chia Yen, Zheng Yuan. The others preferred to mix everyone as a Happy Family.
l Then, the kids labeled vocabulary such as “father, mother, sister, brother”. Next, they coloured the tree and decorated them.

The Legend of Chang Er

Wednesday (22/09/2010)

a) The Legend of Chang Er
· Why do we celebrate The Moon festival? We already knew the story of why we play lantrerns.
· I showed the kids pictures of Chang Er, Hou Yi, the jade Emperor and also the Jade Rabbit. They showed enthusiasm that they loved those pictures and have heard of the story before.
· I invited them to share the story but they were not able to. However, as I was telling the story; the kids added in the storylines of what they know about the story.
· There are many versions of this story but I shared with the kids the following version:
“Chang Er was a beautiful, kind and clever lady who lived on Earth. Hou Yi was a talented soldier of Jade Emperor in the Heaven. One day, there were 10 suns on Earth and many people suffered and were dying. Plants, animals also died and water was no longer in the river nor sea. Jade Emperor ordered Hou Yi, a good archer to shoot down 9 suns. He succeeded. As he was thirsty, he went down searching for water. Chang Er happened to be near him and offered him water. Touched by her kindness and beauty, they soon got married. However, Hou Yi was fearful because Change Er is not an immortal and will age and die. Thus, Hou Yi asked Jade Emperor for help and he gave him the “Everlasting Pill”. He brought it home and hid near the ceiling of his home. He wanted to surprise Chang Er. However, that night; Hou Yi went away for a task. Chang Er saw a light shining from the ceiling beam and out of curiosity; she climbed up to check. She was shocked to see an “Everlasting Pill”. At the same time, a thief came by and tried snatching the pill from Chang Er. To defeat herself, Chang Er swallowed the pill and started floating. At this time, Hou Yi came back in time. The thief fled away and Hou Yi chased Chang Er. When the window was opened, she flew all the way to the moon. Chang Er met Jade Rabbit and asked hime to make her another pill. Only with another pill, can she fly back to the Earth. As we know, she never succeeded. Hou Yi was so sad that he prayed and soon, he became the Sun God while Chang Er became the Moon Goddess. It was believed that on the 15th. Of Chinese Calendar 8th month; the moon is especially beautiful and bright because Hou Yi will meet Chang Er only at the day of the year.

b) Playing Lantern.
· The kids were excited and anxious at playing their lanterns at the school garden. I told them to be very careful as the recycled lantern was made from plastic bottle. Kids were not allowed to play with lantern nor fire alone at home as fire might occur.

c) Vocabulary Revision.
· We recapped words learnt throughout this theme. They were getting better. This time, I even asked them for words definition.

Lantern Decoration

Tuesday (21/09/2010)
a) Song.
We recapped the “Moon Festival” song together. This time, kids were more independent.

b) The lantern “tail”
· Kids listened to my instructions carefully. Each was given a long purple yarn. Then, they folded into half and another half and another half.
· Finally, they pasted one of the ends with cellophane tape so that they stick together.

c) The “Normal” lantern.
· Kids doing this lantern, had to cut the body of the recycled bottle until the line I marked. Then, they had to slip the straps under the rubber bands. It was not easy but I didn’t give them much help as I was guiding some kids. They were very persistent. Those kids were Yun Xin, Xing Tong, Zheng Yuan, Chia Yen, Qian Joe and Yee Xuan. Jun Yu, Zhi Feng and Natalie got more determined after showing them ways to insert the straps. Next, they decorated the straps with colourful stickers.

d) The “Aeroplane” Lantern.
· Here, the kids painted the wings of the plane. They could be as creative as possible. Only Zheng Yuan mixed 2 colours on them. The rest preferred 1 colour. They performed more efficiently as they are more confident with poster painting.
· Next, they decorated their lanterns. Some preferred it to be plain, some preferred it to be colourful.
