Recycling The Newspaper

Today, we learnt the value of “care” and “Thank You”. We learnt that people get very special when they are able to share happiness everywhere. Thus, a cook is not just a cook. This applies to all walks of profession.

a) The Heart Book.
• Every Monday, the kids would bring home their Heart Book. After parents’ signature, the kids have to return back t the class to continue collecting points. It will show the points collected by the kids for different weeks. Comments are written down on each page. Suggestions are also given to encourage the kids to improve. Again, I stress on improvement rather than the highest points. Parents should sign after reading and the signature shows that kids are responsible enough to share with their parents about their work.
• After giving their Heart Books, we picked draws to change roles of duties.

b) Our Beloved Aunty, the cook.
• Last Friday, I have briefly told the kids about aunty’s retirement which is this coming Friday. The kids suggested making a love for her. As we had so much leftover crumpled newspaper (previously used to make the Giant Polar Bear), we shall make the love from the newspaper. Again, Jing Kai stressed that we should recycle wisely!
Teacher: Why are we making a gift for her?
Qian Joe: Because she fell off the motorbike.
Teacher: Yes! But she is retiring for good and we won’t see her anymore! What do you want to tell her?
Class: thank you!
Teacher: Why does she work here even though she is about 63?
Jun Hong: For money!
Teacher: Everyone works for money but sometimes love is even more important. Do you know that she cares for all the kids and teachers here like her own children?
• Hmm…..aunty’s task: preparing the food as hygiene as possible, cook our lunch, wash the dishes, prepare our drinks and food for teabreak, keep the kitchen clean. She also likes sharing stuffs, food and experience with the teachers. She even encourages kids to finish their meals especially those who dislikes vegetables……..haaa. Thus, she is very important and special.

c) Recycling the newspaper.
• The paper was already soaked last week to make it soft.
• Today, the kids queued in 4 groups and scooped the bits of damp newspaper and squeezed them. Then, they were torn into smaller pieces. Next, they were blended and every kid was enthusiastic as how the bits turned out to be. So soapy that Yun we said it looked like “vomit”….haaaa…..but we could hardly see anymore letters.
• Then, we squeezed the blended paper so as to make them drier.

d) The Heart Shape.
• I cut a big box and took a side of the paper box. The kids suggested the size of the love. I sketched. Then, I brought some home-made starchy gum. Chun Kit asked if I could showed them how to make in the future.
• The kids queued into 2 lines. They took turns to scoop the blended newspaper and applied with glue before pasting onto the paper box board. The kids thought it was disgusting but once they
put their hand at work, they requested to do more……From….eeeeee….it changed to …..wahhh! Even Zheng Yuan was brave enough to try.

e) The extras.
• We had some more blended newspaper. Qian Joe asked if they can make a small shape for themselves. They said they wanted to hang at home. I allowed them to draw any shape but it has to be big. We shall continue our craft work tomorrow.

Our Class Rainbow

Thursday (22/07/2010)

Of late, I saw that many kids are reading more books. This is great because they can learn many values from books. Previously, they spent more time drawing. It really takes time for a kid to grow.

a) Review of duties.
l I reviewed the kids’ duties and announced the score. In the morning session, everyone scored equally because the class was very clean when I checked yesterday evening after school. In the evening, a few kids didn’t sleep during their nap and marks were not given. Among: Yun Wen, Chia Yen, Yan Shan, Jun Yu, Jing Kai and Wee Hong. Bonus points were given to a few kids: Jun Yu for assisting me picking up the dropping pieces of sheets. Jun Yu also discovered that some kids didn’t turn off the tap properly. This led me to explain briefly about water shortage in Africa and also the Long House kids.
l The books were well-kept. Well, day 2……hmmmm quite good! I highlighted the reason why some kids received higher scores. I stressed that high score doesn’t mean the best Monitor or Monitress. However, kids who improved the most, would be the best!
l Phrase learnt: We are happy kids! We are responsible kids.

b) Care-a-lot song.
l We warmed up the class by singing this song. This time most kids participated happily without feeling so shy. We danced the simple steps. J

c) My Thinking Hat.
l I introduced the kids this because I need to think of what to do next for our lesson. In Barney’s movie, Yun Wen said, the kids sit on the wheel bench to swing around and think, think, think!
Teacher: Look at your small class. Does it look like a Rainbow Land? Does it look like Care-a-lot land?
Class: No! We must decorate.
l Zhe Qing said that we should take down the hanging dinosaurs. Yun Wen said there must be a rainbow. Shi Jie asked if we could have the castle. Chun Kit added if there could be a slide. Yun Xin said, there must be bubbles and lollipops. Foo Soon said there must be lollipops. He also said there must be cloud cars. Xin Tong said about the golden pot. More: ice-cream, love doors and motorbikes.

d) Let’s observe and paint!
l The kids observed me as I pasted 4 recycle cardboard into a big piece of paper. They asked why I did that and the answer was because we do not have such big paper in school. J
l Then, they got me a pencil and eraser and saw me sketching the huge rainbow.
l We started painting using the brushes and pelaka paint. We queued up and painted the first 2 colours: red and orange.
l The kids advised one another not to use too much water. The brush tip must also be pointed to paint beautifully. We shall continue tomorrow.

Monitors and Monitresses

Wednesday (21/07/2010)

Once, given each kid a task, each became very aware of their tasks. It is nice to see that they even remind their friends. At that moment, I recalled what one of my favourite quotes said, "There are no kids who can't be taught, just kids who have not been taught." :)

a) Care –a-lot Body Movement song.
l Today, we rehearsed the song again. First, we read the lyrics, explained and then sang along together. Then, we thought of the dancing steps. I asked the kids to think to further improve the dance steps……heeee J.

b) Monitors and Monitresses.
l I explained the kids about this task. Each week, we will swap the roles by draw lots. Then, the kids have to be responsible at their duties. I will be checking their progress twice; once during their nap time and second, after school.
l They were excited because points would be collected. I brought in a small whiteboard with everyone’s name and we read through the words together. There were “days”, “date”, “Monitor” and “Monitress”. I welcome them to count their own points. These points would be transferred into a heart book which would be commented by myself every Friday. This task is to ensure that the kids understand the meaning of “responsibility”.

c) Draw Lots.
l The kids formed a big circle and waited patiently to pick their little paper which listed their duties. Our class Monitor and Monitress for this short week are as follows:
- Yun Xin : BM books. Foo Soon: medicine. Devin: Bag shelf.
- Jun Yu: toys Zheng Yuan: rubber and sharpener.
- Kwong Yong: electricity. Jun Hong: tables. Wei Jeen: pencils.
- Chun Kit: water. Qian Joe: cellophane tape.
- Wee Hong: Chinese books. Yan Shan: toys. Shi Jie: Colour Pencils.
- Chia Yen: chairs. Xing Tong: drawing books. Zhi Feng: attendance。
- Yun Wen: scissors。 Natalie Ang: Food shelf。Zhe Qing: notice board.
- Jing Kai: English books。

d) Cutting the “Hearts”.
l The kids were given 2 sheets of hearts and they cut along the line. Most of them could cut them independently except Yan Shan, Natalie and Yun Xin who needed some guidance.
l It was amazing how the class looked extra tidy after everyone left. Three kids stayed after class to clean the classroom which I would stressed to them that that isn’t the correct way as no teacher is available at the moment.

Monitors and Monitress.

Tuesday (20/07/2010)

I have always wished that I could spend some time with the kids for Corner Playing. You can really see their real characters from this activity. Due to my tight schedule, I always remind myself to observe them as much as possible. I deeply appreciate the sharing of other teachers’ observation too.

a) Table Manners.
• This song was taught just before we started having our tea. It sounded like this:
“Chewing quietly, chewing quietly,
Do not slurp, do not slurp,
We must say Excuse Me,
We must say Excuse Me,
When we burp,
When we burp.”

b) Recap of names.
• We quickly recapped the 10 Care Bears names and also remembering their distinctive colours.

c) Song: Care-a-lot.
• First, we read the lyrics together with understanding. Then, I sang with the class listening attentively. It is actually a long song but I chose the easier verse to attract the kids. It involved rhythmic claps and some kids were already dancing around……mmmmm….should I introduce a simple dance? Haaaa…….Wee Hong is really a talented dancer. 
• The lyrics:
Care-a-lot,
We care a lot!
Care-a-lot,
We care a lot!

Sticking together, we can make it!
Nothing can stop us, we can’t go wrong!
We can be tough, yes, we can take it
We care a lot and we will be strong
We care a lot and we will be strong!

d) Storybook: The Yo-yo Girl.
• It’s a story about a girl who thinks she isn’t good at anything. She said her friends are good at different things but she isn’t at all. Her mother talked to her saying that she was proud to have her as a daughter. Why? She is a Yo-yo girl who doesn’t give up and always trying to improve herself. Even all the kids are good at different things. Adults including myself are like yo-yo. I showed them a yo-yo which I played to let them relate better. They were giggling of course……!

e) Monitor or Monitress?
• Our middle-sized class is always messy and sometimes, the English books are in the Mandarin shelves, sometimes the medicine placed nearby the cellophanetapes and erasers are always strangely misplaced!
• Teacher: Who wants to be a monitor?
• Almost every kid puts up his or her hand. Thus, I decided to give everyone a chance. The kids brainstormed 20 tasks that we can do in the classroom. This is the list we came up with and we briefly went through each task and responsibility. Tomorrow, we would pick lots and explain more thoroughly about their duties.
- 3 Book Monitors for 3 languages. - Pencil Monitor.
- Eraser and Sharpener Monitor. - Colour pencil Monitor.
- Scissors Monitor. - Drawing Book Monitor.
- Cellophanetape Monitor. - Medicine Monitor.
- 2 Toys Monitor. - Bag Shelf Monitor.
- Food Shelf Monitor. - Notice Board Monitor.
- Water Monitor. - Electricity Monitor.
- Attendance Monitor. - Chair Monitor.
- Table Monitor.

The RAINBOW KIDS

Monday (19/07/2020)

It’s very important to remind the kids that we are now going into a new theme. Thus, voting for their desired title always excites me because I am able to relate myself better to the bubbly kids!

a) Recap of The Care Bear Movie.
• The kids told me the various bears they saw. They could name about 12……that’s great!

b) The Care Bears Family.
• I showed them 10 different pictures of various colours. They included:
- Bedtime Bear: helps you sleep.
- Birthday Bear: loves giving you a birthday party.
- Good Luck bear: loves sharing luck with you.
- Love-a-Lot Bear: love is powerful.
- Wish Bear: makes your wish comes true.
- Cheer Bear: cheers you up.
- Funshine Bear: this funny bear makes you laugh.
- Friend Bear: loves to be your friend.
- Tenderheart Bear: teaches us to share feelings.
- Grumpy Bear: It’s okay to get frown sometimes but you will look silly.
• The kids just got excited and even share their own stories.

c) Brainstorm: Thematic Title.
• Everyone tried sharing their ideas of the suitable title. Among: Care Bears, The Rainbow Bears, Funshine Bear, Friend Bear, Birthday Bear, Wish Bear, Good Luck Bear, Hug Bear, Love-a-lot Bear.
• Teacher: …but can we use the word “bear”? We aren’t bears.
• Thus, we changed every name to kids and 14 kids chose The Rainbow Kids! Why? Rainbow just cheers up anyone instantly! 

Friday (16/07/2010)

The Care Bears Family.

a) The Rainbow Land
We recapped on yesterday’s rainbow story of Jack and Susan. Their dreams had brought them to a Rainbow Land. I asked the kids to guess things that they might find there. Among: pots of gold, stars, cars, teachers, flowers, mothers, kids, playgrounds etc. With this guess in mind, I gave them another task. I asked them to remember what they see when we watch the cartoon later.

b) The Care Bears Movie 2.
l The kids loved this cartoon a lot. Chun Kit: “There’s love everywhere! Wow!”.
Jun Yu: “How do they help people?”
l Generally, the little cubs were adopted by 2 good adult animals. One being a bear, the other being a horse. They are called Noble Heart and True Heart. They are all so loving with good values that they were given the magical power by the Huge star. In the Care-A-Lot World or the kids called the “Rainbow Land”, there were lots of beautiful flowers and plants. Rainbows were everywhere. Cars are made of clouds…wow! There is a Heart Metre that chimes when the Earth people need help.
l Ther were so many bears with different magical power indicated by different pictures on their chest. In one situation, the Care Bears saw how 2 kids scribbled the walls. They shone their magic to these kids and they immediately realized their mistakes. LOVE and CARE can really make a great difference!
l Of course, there’s “No Heart” who disliked the Care Bears. He would think of ways to capture them. No Heart represents the evil thoughts within us while Care Bears represent the good thoughts within us. J We shall continue with the movie…..

c) Our new theme!
l Yun Xin: Does that mean that we have finished lessons on “Animal Kingdom”? Exactly! We are into the world of love and care. I asked the kids to think of a suitable title and discuss it on Monday.
l Teacher: Why do you think we watch the Crae Bears?
l Shi Jie: We want to be good children.
l How can we be good children?
l Various answers: Love our families, love our friends and etc. Most importantly, love ourselves first. We discussed some good values: manners, caring, disciplne and sharing. Yun Wen said we can visit the Orphanage. Jun Hong said he hoped to adopt a little brother. Foo Soon asked if we could learn about Sports Car. I said maybe we can make some toys including Sports car for the orphans. Recently, the kids love to dance led by Wee Hong when listening to our Animal Thematic songs. Maybe our project could be a charity or performance. Wow…..sounds lots of fun! :)

Let’s perform!

Friday (09/07/2010)

a) Dressing up.
l The kids requested to perform downstairs but they didn’t want to be watched by anyone. Haaaaaa….:)
l I thought going down to perform with music would be great because to train their courage and furthermore they could get some audience such as Teacher Pik Xia, Teacher Ya Hui, Teacher Re Hong and also Teacher Hui Ting.

b) Let’s perform!
l I was the MC and also the narrator. Then, I turned on the music and introduced the characters. As I mentioned the animal characters, they stepped out and moved like the said animals. Very few needed prompting for this part.
l Then, we started the role-play.
l They were much more independent and were able to say their lines better. Xing Tong replaced Zhe Qing as Mother Bear as she was not around. First, there were the bears. Then, the snake came out to hunt the cub. However, the cats, dogs and woodpeckers screamed for help. The porcupines came to rescue. The snake died. The cub continued to yelled for help as it couldn’t swim well. The fireflies came to brighten the dark night. The bats came to rescue but they couldn’t carry the heavy cub. Thus, elephant came to rescue. Then, a vet riding on his horse came to save the cub. At the end, the bears realized that not all humans are bad people. Only hunters could be dangerous to them!

c) Organising our file.
l Each kid was given a plastic holder to place their craft work and worksheets. They placed their snail, rabbit craft and etc into the holder.

Role-Play

Thursday (08/07/2010)

a) Review

l We read flash cards to review the vocabulary learnt.
l Then, we reviewed our story, “Save The Cub!”

b) Props

l The kids took their masks. Then, they came forward to choose their desired clothes as props. Most wanted to tie the cloth as their capes. Some preferred top tie on their waist. Some wanted to tie on their hands. They were all so excited. We did this performance in the classroom.

c) First Performance.
l The kids sat in their positions. I was the narrator. They came forward when I mentioned their names. I guided them with the postures and movement when they are stuck. Encouragement was needed to get them being involved in the role-play. They enjoyed it and asked for a second performance. Overall, the kids were participative except a few. The kids learnt to listen to cues, learnt to move seriously and with actions. They also learn to listen and respect their friends during performance.

Mask Continuation

Wednesday (07/07/2010)

a) Mask Decoration
* The kids continued decorating their masks. Some coloured while some pasted the props on them. They were excited and I reminded them that they have to be completed nicely.

b) Rubberband chains.
* The kids were given 6 rubberbands. First, we put one over our toe thumb. Then, a second rubberband was linked to the first and so on. It was quite challenging as it tested the kids' motor skill. Some 5 -year old kids helped their friends after completing theirs. They were Chun Kit and Yun Xin. The 6-year old kids were also independent at it.
* Then, I mesasured their ears position to the paper masks. I punched the holes and the kids tried inserting the rubberband and tie to the masks.
* By the end of the day, our masks have almost completed.

* We discussed at how to colour our masks and some other props to paste on the paper plates. Example: the big elephant ears, the long trunk of an elephant, the fireflies antennas and also the dogs ears'.

* After drawing, the kids started colouring their masks. Some could finish while some not. To be continued.....

c) Choose the cast!
· The kids got to make their decision of choosing the cast they wanted to perform.
· They are as follows:

I was focusing more on the expressions so that they could feel the story well. They enjoyed themselves. Jun Hong kept asking if we are going to perform for parents or anyone. The kids said maybe we could perform for the other kids in school. Well, it depends whether they are serious with this performance. The kids asked if they could make masks for themselves. We shall be doing that soon.

We are authors

Friday (02/07/2010)
a) Storybook: The Rabbit and the mouse.
• An interesting story of how the animals saved the rabbit that got stuck in the tree stem. Finally, a mouse bit the rabbit’s abdomen and he get off from the hole. 

b) Storybook 2: Duma and the lion.
• An African story which explains why cheetahs have to run fast. They are the fastest runner in the world even faster than the lions. Little cheetahs have to run fast to avoid being eaten by lions.

c) Mime Game.
• Every kid mimed as an animal without speaking. It was fun and actually guided the kids with their story creation later on. Qian Joe mimed as a bat, Jun Hong mimed as a dinosaur, Yun Xin mimed as a duck, I mimed as a firefly.

d) Our story
• We brainstormed to create the story together. I gave them the first 2 sentences and they continued the rest. It was really fun as the kids tried to continue from their friends’ lines. They were really attentive. The story goes:
- Mother Bear disallowed its cub to eat more fish as it was sleeping time. The cub crawled quietly into the forest river when mother fell asleep. The dark forest and the strong wind caused the cub to fall straight into the river. It couldn’t swim very well. It screamed “help” and a snake crawled by wanted to eat it. It screamed louder! The cats meowed and the dogs barked! A porcupine came to rescued but the snake swallow the porcupine. It got angry and shot the snake’s stomach from inside. Wow! Fireflies lit the dark river. Bats came to carry the cub but failed. The elephant came to help. Mother bear reached the forest at this moment. They were very sad. Then, a vet riding his horse came to rescue. Mother Bear growled thinking that humans are predators. The horse explained that he was a good man. He quickly gave the cub CPR. However, it still needed an injection. Mother growled loudly. Firefly suggested herbs. They searched and found it. The vet squashed the herbs and gave to the cub as medicine. The cub woke up and everyone was happy! Hooray

The Dice

Thursday (01/07/2010)

a) Storybook: Jungle Bullies

l This story is about bullies who finally became friends with the smaller animals.
l First, the elephant bullied the hippopotamus in the river and chased it away. Then, the hippo chased away a smaller lion lying on the path. The lion chased away a leopard in the tall grass. The leopard chased away a monkey lying on a big tree. The little monkey told its mother. Mother taught him to stand up for itself. The little monkey took a deep breath and talked to the leopard, “Hi, leopard. This tree is such a big one. Let’s share and be friends. Don’t bully me again.” The leopard thought for a while and said, “Okay, let’s share it.” They became good friends. The leopard had an idea and told the lion using the sma esentence. It was accompanied by the monkeys. Now, there are 4 good friends. The lion went over to talk to the hippo and all became good friends. Finally, they went to the river and hippo spoke to the huge elephant. Finally, they are all good friends and it was much more fun playing with friends than being alone.
l Morale: We should love people so that we have friends. If we were in trouble one day, good friends will help us. If we bullied people, we will be disliked and live lonely and in danger too. The kids love the story so much!
l This story is to inspire the kids for their own role-play as our last activity for the theme.

b) Craft: Dice
l A Board Game would be incomplete without a dice. First, a small card was given to each kid. They wrote “1,2,3,4,5,6” on the paper. Some preferred to draw dots. Then, they cut along the T-shaped line and fold it along the drawn pencil lines. It was quite challenging for the 5-year old kids. Then, they had to paste with cellophane tape so as to make a cube dice. Finally, they were proud of the produced result.
l Those who finished making the dice and counters, could play with a partner. They were excited because they played on their own designed Board Game. Meanwhile, some were guided to make the counters as they were absent or didn’t manage to complete them the day before.
