“53rd. INDEPENDENCE DAY” – MERDEKA!

Monday (30/08/2010)

a) Farewell, our friends.
• We said goodbye to the 5 six-year old pupils. All of a sudden, there seemed to be a quiet different environment, never felt in the class before. “Missing” emotion is what I would described. However, we all knew that this day would come and we already had a Farewell Party earlier last Tuesday. Take great care, children! On the other hand, 5 four-year old kids would come to our class on 1st. September.
• We ended the HEART BOOK activity. From today onwards, the kids will take care of their class as a whole. I read the kids marks and awarded them separately. Those who were responsible with their HEART BOOK and had been a good monitor or monitress were awarded a beautiful notebook. Those, who didn’t were awarded a colourful pencil because they did show improvement. Those who lost their book such as Jun Hong was not awarded.

b) Costumes.
• This morning, I accompanied the kids in their parade. Our class marched together with the six-year old pupils. First, we sang Malaysia National Anthem, then “31 Ogos” which the kids have learnt earlier. Next, I accompanied them marching outside the school along the roadside. There really was “MERDEKA” spirit.
• As for the afternoon session, we had to do it alone as a class as from now onwards, we are the only afternoon thematic session.
• First, the kids chose their desired costumes.
Kwong Yong: “Can we bring home these clothes?
Teacher: Haaa…..it belongs to our kindergarten, so that all kids can share together.
• Some kids were reluctant to wear them but after some encouragement, they wore them. Example: Zheng Yuan, Jun Yu and Natalie. I was very glad they wore the costumes because they looked so adorable. 

c) Malaysia Multi-Races.
• Each kid took turn to stand in front and we guessed the race they represented.
• There were the Malays, Chinese, Indians and the general clothes for everyone. Among:
Natalie wore the Indian sari, Yun Xin, Chia Yen wore the Chinese cheongsams, Zhe Qing and Xing Tong wore baju kurungs, Zhi Feng and Chun Kit wore baju Melayus, Devin, Wee Hong, Wei Jeen, Jun Yu wore Chinese male Samfus while Zheng Yuan chose to wear a jacket universal for all races. 

d) Indoor Parade.
• We sang “31 Ogos” and marched 2 rounds surrounding the school. As we marched, we shouted excitedly, “MERDEKA! MERDEKA! MERDEKA!”

e) My Malaysia Book.
• To reinforced what the kids have learnt about Malaysian races and their activities, I gave each kid a piece of paper consisting small colouring pictures featuring them. Example: Hari Raya
Puasa, Deepavali, Chinese New Year and Christmas.
• They had to choose a colour for each picture and shade over them.

Malaysia Flag

Thursday (26/08/2010)

Unity starts from the seeds we plant. Thus, unity begins form a young child. As adults, we must always be aware of our speech and actions as they influence their growth. When I was young, I was surrounded by people of all races. We played together, shared celebratios together and helped one another when in troubles. We never discriminate. It is only when I step into the career world, I hear and see unsatisfactions. I still love Malaysia because I believe it will change for the better. So, shower our kids with love and optimism. It is only when they grow up, they can decide what's good or bad especially in politics. That, I guess will be fairer....

a) Malaysia Map.
* I drew Malaysia on the board and the kids said that it is actually very small in the world map. True. Jun Yu asked me where Taiwan is, Yun Xin asked where China is and etc. Thus, I sketched a world map. They were amazed that Singapore is very tiny. In fact, it is smaller than Melaka area but Singapore's fast and well development makes its reason to stand out.
* I introduced the 14 different states as well as West and East Malaysia. They were excited to see the indication of Klang and also KL.

b) The "Jalur Gemilang" flag.
* The kids have been colouring Malaysia flag these few days. Thus, I tested them about it.
* How many stripes are there? What colours are them?
* What does red and white represent?
* How about yellow colour? What about the moon and the stars? What does blue mean?
* As they didn't know, we took today's session to learn about Malaysia Flag.
* The red stripes represent courage to love our country.
* White stripes represent purity in Malaysians's actions. Examaple: be honest and no bribary.
* Yellow used to be the Royal colour. Those days, anyone who wore yellow would be caught as it was illegal. However, yellow was then made the colour for all people. Besides, yellow is a cheerful olour.
* The moon represents Malaysia formal religion, Islam. Yet, Malaysians are free to choose their religion.
* The 14 pointed-star represents the 14 states of Malaysia.
* Dark blue represents unity of all the 14 states.

c) 1 malaysia.
* The kids learnt about this logo as it was introduced by our 6th Prime Minister, Datuk Najib.
* It is the call for unity of all races.

d) Colouring.
* The kids started colouring their flag. They were careful with the colour they chose. Example: dark blue and not light blue. Bright red and not dark red. Thus, they had to learn to share the colours.
* Then, they cut the flag and pasted to a straw. They will be doing a short parade on Monday; our Merdeka Eve.
* We sang our favourite Merdeka song again. Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!

What is “Merdeka”?

Wednesday (25/08/2010)
a) Patriotic Song: Tanggal 31
· We watched the computer clips for this song. We also watched the clip of “1 Malaysia” song. One was a modern version while another was an older version which explains the black and white colour clip vs. to colourful clip as of today’s tv.
· In the classroom, we read the lyrics and understand the interpretation. Then, we sang together happily with “Merdeka” spirit. We only sang the first 2 verses.
Tanggal 31

Bulan lapan lima puluh tujuh
Merdeka ! Merdeka !Tetaplah merdeka
Ia pasti menjadi sejarah
Tanggal 31
Bulan lapan lima puluh tujuh
Hari yang mulia
Hari bahagia
Sambut dengan jiwa yang merdeka
Mari kita seluruh warga negara
Ramai-ramai menyambut hari merdeka
Merdeka !
Tiga satu bulan lapan lima puluh tujuh
Hari mulia negaraku merdeka

· We learnt new words like “Independence”, history and happy spirit

b) What is “Merdeka”?
· These few days the kids have been seeing their friends making flags or even heard them singing Negaraku and saying “Merdeka”?
· Chun Kit: Merdeka means we don’t have to come to school.
· Haaa……that’s true but why is this public holiday important?
· Who gave us Merdeka?
Shi Jie: The Government.
Qian Joe: Is Malaysia’s birthday.
· We started comparing the kids and adults in Malaysia with others from some unfortunate countries. According to Wikipedia, there are still afew non-independent countries.
· Why can we buy things easily and freely compared to them? Why are there no soldiers surrounding our cities compared to theirs?
· Merdeka or Independence means we are free to enjoy the things around us. We are free to speak up, to go shopping, to visit friends and to travel around.
· Thus, in Malaysia we can see people of different races working and socializing together. In fact, this is the important factor that entitled us “Merdeka” from British.
· If Malaysians do not appreciate this freedom, there might be war and Merdeka is meaningless. Do you want to live in riot? The kids immediately said “No”.

c) History of Malaysia.
· Malaysia’s origin people are believed to be indigenous and the Malays. As our country is located in a strategic place, many countries at that time wanted to monopolise Malaysia or Tanah Melayu. Americans, Dutch, British came for trading. Then, more people around the world came to trade including Indians and Chinese. That explains why we have Malaysians Chinese and Indians. Finally, British is the more powerful country that govern our country. The Sultans and Kings had to obey their instructions. Merdeka was not given. When Japanese invaded Malaysia, many countries teamed up to defeat Japan. Eventually, Japanese surrendered and people inTanah Melayu started negotiating “Merdeka” from the British.
· The British required the unity of the people. That was why our Father of Independence; the late Tunku Abdul Rahman together with a Chinese leader and Indian leader flew to London and won the negotiation. On the day of 31st. August, 1957; everyone of different races went to the stadium with abundance of joy; celebrating this memorial day, “Independence Day”.

d) Malaysia leaders.
· Headed by the Royal (King and Queen) and assisted by the leaders; “Prime Ministers”. The kids were shown portraits of different leaders including the current sixth Prime Minister, “YAB Dato' Sri Mohd. Najib Bin Tun Hj. Abdul Razak.
· Pictures of various races celebration were also shown. Example: Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali, Gong Xi F Cai, Permainan Gasing, Lion Dance
and also Thaipusam.

A Great Party!

Tuesday (24/08/2010)
Groups.
* the kids were divided into 3 groups. One under the care of Huang Lao Shi, another under the care of Pik Xia Lao and another under myself.
* We recalled what each of us has to do. The kids have to use the magic words, take good care of themselves and their money as well as observe the different races ie Malays, Chinese and Indians.

b) At the early "Night Market".
* We split and walked in 3 different groups. My groups bought biscuits, tidbits, candies and also fries and nuggets. Yun Xin bought chocolate love letters, Chun Kit bought tiny round biscuits, Yun Wen bought the wheel crackers, Jun Yu bought some prawn crackers while Jing Kai bought some soft candies.
* Those under Huang Lao Shi bought 2 packets of sugar cane juice. Along the way we saw how the sellers sliced the sugar cane plants. They also bought 2 cups of sweet corns.
* Those under Pik Xia Lao Shi bought donuts, banana cakes, apples and oranges.
* As we were buying and shopping, we saw some Malays people, some Chinese and very few Indians.
* The kids saw some fishmongers, some Yong Tau Foo sellers and also some herbal tea sellers. As some people were grinning at them, we greeted them such as "Hello" and "Good Afternoon".

C) Rainbow Party.
* The kids washed their hands and took a chair to sit on and gather around the tables while waiting patiently. Some kids helped me with bowls, cups and spoons distribution. Meanwhile, I poured the foods into some trays so that the kids could queue and choose their favourite food.
* We also took some foods and shared with the other 3 classes.

d) Brief discussion.
* How do you feel?

Yun Xin: I felt very happy because I can buy what I want to.
Wee Hong: I am very happy because I can go the Night Market......yeah!!
Others: We are very happy because we can eat and share a lot of delicious foods.
*As for the tidbits, I didn't give all at once to them. I kept some for future rewards. I advised the kids to drink a lot of water.

The Golden Coin

Wednesday (18/08/2010)

a) Warm up.
* Scissors, stone and cloth game.
* Similar to the Chinese version except that we change to English.
" How are you? How are you?
I am fine, thank you.
I am happy, thank you.
Are you ready?
1,2,3,4,5 GO!"

b) I am special.
* I brought in a golden chocolate coin for the class.
Teacher: You are just like a golden coin. What does that mean?
Shi Jie: that means we are beautiful.
* The others had no idea but were more attracted to share their experience of eating that golden chocolate coin.
Wee Hong: where does gold come from?
* It's actually a mineral from the earth. It has to be processed to make it of different shapes. People of the past don't use silver coins or paper money. They used gold bars and other forms of medium as money.
Yun Xin: Why did we stop using gold?
Teacher: Some countries still use golden coins. Previously, we also had golden coins but today, we use other metals as coins. Gold could be quite heavy and inconvenient. Every country has different coin face and paper money face.
* You are like a golden coin because you have the good value. When people ask us to do certain things, we have to think it over whether it's good or bad. When we are bullied, we shall stand up for ourselves. We help people in needs and not tease handicappers. We respect people because love is powerful. We know when to say "Yes" and "No" to protect ourselves.

c) Money value.
Teacher: Is money important?
* Our parents work hard to buy us things.
Teacher: What the important things that we need?
Jun Hong: House.
Yun Xin: Food. Xing Tong: Clothes. Qian Joe: Shoes. Wee Hong: Chocolates.
Teacher: Some chocolates as rewards, maybe.

d) Sketching coins.
* I introduced the kids different Malaysia coins.
* There are 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, RM1 and etc.
* I thought them how to sketch the coins.
* We would be learning a little about money value as to instil the appreciation attitude. Details will be further learned in year 6 and Primary School.
* The reason is because we shall be buying some food from a nearby Night Market. Then, we shall have a simple farewell party for the 6-year old kids who are moving to 6 years old class. We are also in the topic of "sharing and friendship".

A Happy Family.

Friday (20/08/2010)
a) Role Play: Family.
• We did a mini role-play of 2 family situations.
(A) An Unhappy Family.
• Two children; a brother and a sister are playing while their mother is busy cooking. When the father reaches home, he rings the bell but the house is so noisy that the kids didn’t hear it. When mother heard it, mother asked the kids to opne but each gave excuses that they were busy too. Angry mother scolded them and hurried to open the door. The tired and impatient father came in and scolded everyone. He hit the kids when they started answering back. It was a very unhappy family.
(B) A Happy Family.
• Mother was cleaning the windows in the kitchen. Two kids are playing. When they heard the doorbell rang, they stopped playing and quickly opened the door. The brother carried father’s shoes and sister asked mother to pour a cup of warm water for father. Then, she brought the cup for father. Then, she asked “How are you, father?” The brother massaged his father.
• Later, mother called everyone to prepare for dinner. Brother and sister helped mother to set up table for dinner. At dinner time, they mind table manners. They greeted their parents before eating. They even gave some dishes to their parents.
• After meal, sister helped mother to wash the plates. Brother cleaned the table. Then, they watched television together only after they have finished their homework.
• Before bedtime, they brushed their teeth. Sometimes, they requested their parents for bedtime stories. They would hug and kiss their parents good night.

b) Discussion: chores
• Do you help your parents with chores?
• We helped happily and with good manners.
• Devin helped his maid to fold the clothes.
• Chun Kit always gives his father a cup of warm drink.
• Some gave massages to their parents.
• Yun Xin said all parents love their kids. When parents scold us is because they want us to improve and be better.
• Love is powerful.

c) Homework: Chores and Family Chart.
• The chores are the kids’ homework. When I said the other paper of “Family Chart” is their parents’ homework; they giggled…..heeee!
• Kids would have to draw the pictures of how they helped their family at home over the weekend.
• Meanwhile, parents would have to fill in simple particulars of their family and to provide photos if any.
• We would using that info and convert into a family chart, next week.

d) Brainstorming: Night Market.
Objectives: - To see how people of different races come as one to do do business.
- A farewell party for our 6-year old friends.
- Learning to share.
- Appreciating the money value.
Yun Xin: Wow, we can choose our own food.
• Before deciding where to go, I surveyed 2 places. Our nearby Night Market and also the Ramadhan Bazaar in Teluk Pulai. Realising that more food choices are available at the nearby Night Market, I decided that it would be a better place.
• We will go on Tuesday (24/08/2010) and each kid will bring RM 2.00. They will bring home the balance change if any; that depends on what they are buying. I request them to wear the school green t-shirt and to bring a small sling bag if any. Otherwise, shorts or pants with pockets are good enough too. Teacher Huang will sms parents about this short trip.
• The kids have decided on the items they would buy. If everything’s available; it is as follows:
Corns – Devin, Wei Jeen. Fries – Yun Xin, Natalie.
Biscuits – Kwong Yong, Zheng Yuan. Kuih – Zheng Feng, Chun Kit.
Apples – Xing Tong. Oranges – Chia Yen. Sweets or chocolate – Jing Kai.
Cakes – Zhe Qing
, Wee Hong. Soya Bean – Qian Joe, Shi Jie.
Other drinks - Foo Soon, Jun Hong. Tidbits – Jun Yu and Yun
Wen.

Are you afraid?

Tuesday (17/08/2010)
a) Quote: Listening.
* We recited this together.
"A clever old owl sits on an oak tree. The l
* Thus, we have to understand any conversation or situation we are in before speaking our thoughts. We would be respected even more when we think and speak intelligently.

b) AFRAID.
* Have you ever been afraid? I shared with them my experience of how I crossed the road by myslf for the first time feeling so afraid but with full cautious. Of course, even after being prefect at crossing; my carelessness can also harm my safety. Just like how I was run over by a bike at about 7 years old without looking properly before crossing. However, mistakes make us stronger and wiser.
* Again, how scared I ws when I went alone to buy food from a stall. Just after first time, I began to feel braver and more confident. Of course, I need to get my proper cash change.
Teacher: When were you afraid?
* Everyone started sharing their stories.
Shi Jie: Sometimes my parents scold me because I am mischievous.
Yun Xin: When mother and father quarelled, they shouted loudly. I was so afraid.
Qian Joe: Angry parents might hit us!
Teacher: True.....if they don't control their anger.
Yun Xin: They should blow the balloons..:)
Xing Tong: My parents quarelled in the care too and I wasn't afraid.
Teacher: Well, they love you; don't they?
Xing Tong: Yes!
Teacher: When parents love us, they will not harm us. They just want to guide us being good people.
* Wee Hong: My mother will scold me whenI am naught.
Teacher: Everyone makes mistakes including adults. We just need to improve.
Wei Jeen: I am not afraid when mother scolds me because my father is there to protect me.
Teacher: We don't want misunderstanding between parents, do we? We must treat father and mother equally with love and respect.
Zhe Qing: I am afraid to buy Roti Canai because the Indian seller always pinch my cheeks.
Teacher: Haaa......could it be because you look cute?
* Jun Hong shared that aother Roti Canai man liked touching his hair. Well, positively, these kids are cute and beautiful just like when I used to be a chubby girl. As we feel afraid and angry at the same time, we can tell our parents about it. Otherwise, tell the Roti Canai man that, "Please don't pinch me, it is painful. I am also a big boy (girl) now.
Yun Xin: We can't stay at home alone.
Shi Jie: However, if our maid is at home, then it is okay.
Teacher: However, if emergencies occur such as parents sending vrother to hospital, we should take good care of ourself at home. We have to memorise our parents' telephone number in case we need them.
Shi Jie: Can we give their numbers to friends.
Teacher: Only with your parents' permission.

c) Storybook: I Am Afraid.
* There are positive fear and negative fear.
Negative fears are when we think negatively over little matters such as sleeping in the dark and thinking of ghosts. Jun Hong said we can sleep with our mother if we are afraid......but are we gonna do the same when we grow older?
Positive fears such as recognising poisonous spiders, crossing a busy road or even when swimming in deep water. THEN, we have to be careful and think whether we can overcome the fear.
* To overcome fear; we can talk to someone. We must also try doing the things we fear. When we have tried one time, we shall be even more sucessful the next time!

d) Activity: The Falling Bottle.
* This game is similar to bungee jumping. A kid stands in the centre. The others sit on the floor with their legs stretched straight to the boy's feet. it would look like a flower. The centre kid has to fall by pushing his head backward first, followed by body and his legs. Qian Joe volunteered. He did well. Ecah kid fell three times to different directions; so that all can catch or stopped him from falling. Some fell by sitting down. So, they tried again. It's important for those sitting down to focus and stop him with their hands.
* Chia Yen was afraid at first but we cheered herf ame to ecourage her. Then, Zheng Yuan too tried and smiles were everywhere after the activity. It felt scary yet fun and secured because our friends will not let us down :)

e) Song: Heal The World.
* We sang this song by looking at the lyrics and then, sang aother time without the lyrics......hmmmm.....quite good!

Recording: Water Crystal.

Monday (16/08/2010)

a) Quotes.
* We recited a new quote.
" Have a good brain, Think good thoughts, Speak good words, Act good deeds, We shall be beautiful and happy".

b) Sign Language Song: Heal The World
* This is such a popular song that some kids sang along the chorus when I introduced to them.
However they were puzzled as it was sung by a group of choir kids rather than Michael Jackson.
Later, I told them that the late singer had already passed away last year. Foo Soon said he died being murdered which was still a mystery because the doctor could have given him too much medicine drugs for his health. He was famous because this song was very meaningful. It was for everyone despite races; Chinese, indians, Muslims, Africans, Koreans, Japaese, Arabians and etc.
* More beautifully, the choir kids sang with beautiful sign language skill.
* We are not into the community topic yet but I thought the kids need sometime to familarize with the song.
* We practised the Chorus first and they just loved it. With interpretation of the lyrics, it gets even more meaningful.
* So, whose the doctor? There was a pause until Zheng Yuan answered "people". True; we can make a difference by loving the Earth just as in the "water crystal" theory.
CHORUS:
Heal The World,
Make it a better place,
For you and for me,
And the entire human race,
There are people dying,
If you care enough,
For the living,
Make a better place,
For you and for me.

c) New responsibilities.
* The kids took their Heart Book and pasted stickers into them. They took turns to pick a cardboard paper randomly that indicate their duties.
* These are the kids who have seriously and consistently doing their duties for the past 4 weeks: Yu Wen, Yun Xin, Xing Tong, Devin, Wei Jeen, Jun Yu, Zheng Yuan. They were praised!

d) Recording: Dr. Emoto's Water Crystal.
*We recalled briefly of the experiment. Then I sketched a picture on the board for the kids to understand better.
* First: 3 containers of water with different labels. A: I Love You, B: I Hate You, C: Nothing.
* Second: A microscope and its drop of water from the three containers.
* Third: Result: Pictures of "I Love You" Water Crystal and "I Hate You" water Crystal.
* Kids had to label the important parts of the picture.

"Water Crystal” Microscope Session

Friday (13/04/2010)
a) Observing the frozen water.
• I placed the three containers on the table. One of the kids asked what happened to the water which we poured into yesterday. Jun Yu said that they were placed in the freezer and water changes to ice when it is very cold.
• Container A: “I Love You” Container B: “I Hate You” Container C: Normal.
• The kids compared the surface of each frozen water and saw that Container A has smoother surface with less breakage. What’s happening here.

b) Logical Thinking.
• Recalling our previous experiment on plants. The kids exclaimed “Ahhh!”. Their pleasant words actually help the plants to grow more healthily compared to the unpleasant words.
• Teacher Re Hong did the rice experiment with them. It applies the same theory. Instaed of saying words to our water; this time we just pasted pleasant words and unpleasant words to the water container. Strange but it works.

c) Video Clip: Dr Emoto’s Water Crystal theory.
• Being a scientist, Dr. Emoto did a lot of research on water. His conclusion was the energy that we channeled to the water will affect its flow.
• Summary: Firstly: When humans think positively, they will grow wisely and beautifully. If they prefer fool brains, they would be fools! Secondly, our words and actions would also affect people and things around us.
• Example: a glass of water was taken from an Earthquake place in Japan. Initially, it was very muddy. After 3 months of loving phrases, it changed into a clear water crystal.
• We watched various patterns of water crystals and learnt to differentiate the good to bad ones.

d) Microscope session.
• I introduced the school’s microscope. However, it is not as powerful as those use in schools. Thus, we could probably only observe the outline rather than the full crystal shape.
• The kids waited for their turn patiently and anxiously. The kids were taught to see through using only one eye.
• First: Container A – a big circle with dots in it scattered nicely.
• Second: Container B – a fuzzy line that has a little messy scattered dots.
• Third: Container C – some dots scattered about.
• It was a amazing session. 

Balloon Wonders

Thursday (12/08/2010)
a) Case Study
• 4 kids volunteered to assist me at role-play and I whispered to them what they needed to do.
i) Kid A was reading his new book. His friend got excited and wanted to see. Instead Kid A pushed him away and Kid B cried. Kid A scolded him angrily.
ii) Kid C was eating some honey stars and his friend, Kid D was curious. In fact, Kid C pushed Kid D away and scolded him too!
iii) Kid E and Kid F wanted a chair. Kid F reached the chair first but Kid E snatched the chair as he liked the colour. He pushed Kid F and and hurt his arm. Kid E scolded him too.
iv) Kid G followed his father to shopping centre and demanded him to buy him toys. When his father insisted saying that he didn’t bring enough money, Kid G started scolding his father and screamed loudly.

• We discussed the situation and realized that those boys’ anger is out of control. They should
i) Say “Come, join me and read my new book” and laugh together. If he doesn’t want to share, just say; “I want to read alone. Please don’t disturb”.
ii) Say “Here’s one honey star for you.” Otherwise, “I don’t have enough. I shall bring more next time.”
iii) Say “Can I have this chair. I like the colour.” The other kid, “Any colour is okay. Anyway, I took this chair first. Please go and take another one.”
iv) Say “Please can I have this toy?” or “Can you buy me this toy next time?”

b) Controlling Anger.
• Run, play sports, swim, scream at a quiet place which doesn’t disturb the public such as at the beach or taking deep breath.
• First, we ran for a few rounds and realized that running will help lose our ANGER energy. Then, we pretended to swim and play badminton.

c) Blow the balloon!
• First, we took a few deep breaths and pretended to blow a balloon with all the stomach energy. Then, the boys sat in the middle of the circle while the girls surrounded them. Each boy chose their favourite colour. The girls started scolding and screaming at them as if they are angry. All the boys started blowing the thick balloons including Jun Yu and Zheng Yuan who tried. Then, some boys asked me for help. I stretched their balloons and they tried again. It was easier. Then, we changed roles between boys and girls. Overall, 5 kids blew up successfully. The others at least blew persistently and the balloon bloomed up…haaa! They were excited.
d) Water Crystal Experiment.
• To relate to brain and emotions, we did this experiment. 3 containers were prepared with different phrases.
• Container A: I Love You. Container B: I Hate You. Container C: Nothing.
• I asked the kids to guess but they have no idea. The containers were then placed into the
freezer and we can only analyse tomorrow when it is frozen.

About Criminals

Tuesday (10/08/2010)

a) Circle Time: Criminlas.

* Who can draw faces of criminals. First, Wee Hong tries, then Devin, then Kwong Yong, Foo Soon anf finally Shi Jie.

* The kids felt that criminals have ugly faces until Yun Wen said that's not true. Then, how do we know if a person is a bad guy? usually, their faces are scary and the way they look at the victims is actually a warning sign. We would feel afraid or scared! Kids should not to strangers and if they approached kids, kids should run to a safe and crowded place. An article which I read shared that we shouldn't be scared to look at the criminals' faces. in fact, when we stare at them, they would think that we are too brave and tough to overcome. They might give up on us.

* Some people are good looking but not necessary kind. Some people are not that good looking or pretty but they have kind hearts. In this case, we sometimes have to use our feelings for judgement.

* However, criminals always think of bad things and thus, have scary face with wrinkles and are usually ugly!

b) Photos of criminals.

* I showed the kids some dangerous Criminals of USA. immediately, almost everyone just participated to gtell their stories......phew!!

Jun Hong: My sister had to go for stitching when the criminals injured her.

Foo Soon: My father too was attacked by criminals because they knew that my father had a lot of money in hand at closing time.

Yun Wen: Why haven't I met any criminals?

Teacher: Pray that you don't ever meet one! They like going to quiet places and rich places such as banks.

Yun Xin: I'm ot afraid because I have dogs to protect us.

* Some criminals spied at the victims and even fed the dogs with poisonous food to kill them first.

Wei Jeen: My father said that criminals will be handcuffed and put into jails.

Devin: My sister has seen a criminal before.

Natalie: My mother has seen one when we were driving in the car.

Teacher: What were the criminals thinking?

Shi Jie: When they were young, they were good people. However, when they grew up; they learn bad things and couldn't differentiate the rights to wrongs.

* We related to smoking and friends influence.

Wei Jeen: My grandfather died because he smoked too much.

Yun Wen: When bad friends disturbed us, we just say "NO" to them and walk away. Don't be their friends because they would made us bad too!

c) Video Clips: Most Wanted Criminals of USA.

* Some were caught for kidnapping, killing and also robbery. Kids were like surprised to see even woman criminals.

d) Discussion: The mirror reflection.

* How do they look? Are they angry people? Yes!!! When a person is angry, they can't think well.

* Look into the mirror! Scold your friends by staring into the mirroe. how do you look? It is nice to be so angry and scold bad words? It is like scolding ourselves back!!

* The kids were divided into 4 groups. They scolded words that they always used in class or heard from friends. Wohhh!!!

* Ask your parents how should we control ourselves when we are ANGRY?

Emotions.

Monday (09/08/2010)

a) Emotions
 I brought in 4 puppet faces of emotions: happy, anger, afraid and sad.
 As I was introducing them, the kids automatically shared their stories especially on sadness. One of them said their parents sometimes quarrel and his mother will cry. Another kid said her mother cries openly when her brother is mischievous.
 Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone cries when they are sad only that some cry openly while some cry quietly. Either they are shy or they don’t want their family members to worry. Whatever it is, every problem can be solved if we are determined enough.

b) Song: What’s the matter with you?
 First we sang together and then I explained the meaning to them especially on the second verse.
= What’s the matter with you? What’s the matter with you?
“Hmmm…Hmm” I am angry.
If you tell me right now, I’ll see what I can do for you,
“Hmmm…Hmm” I am angry.
What’s the matter with you? What’s the matter with you?
“Haa…..haa” I am happy.
If you tell me right now, I’ll see what I can do for you,
“Haa…..haa” I am happy.
What’s the matter with you? What’s the matter with you?
“Eerrr…eerr” I am afraid.
If you tell me right now, I’ll see what I can do for you,
“Eerrr…eerr” I am afraid.
What’s the matter with you? What’s the matter with you?
“Ooo…ooo” I am so sad.
If you tell me right now, I’ll see what I can do for you,
“Ooo…ooo” I am so sad.

c) The Bully Puppets.
 The puppets were of different colours. There are green boy (afraid), red boy (angry), yellow boy (happy) and blue boy (sad).
 Red boy and Blue boy were playing basketball. Red boy who was older came to snatch their ball. Green boy hid behind a tree feeling so afraid. Blue boy started crying when he wanted to snatch the ball back. Red Boy got angrier and hit Blue boy’s arm. Yellow boy came to handle the situation. Red boy got angrier and started shouting. The three boys went back to school and told their teacher. The teacher also a Yellow puppet came to advise the red boy. The red boy changed to green colour and eventually blue when he realized he made a mistake. However, everyone makes mistakes and we must learn from them to be good agin.

d) The Emotion game.
 The kids sat on their chairs in a big circle. I sang the song “What’s the matter with you” and when I stopped, the kids who was holding a toy would have to stand in a big hula hoop and randomly pick an emotion card from a stack. Then, they mimed the action and theclass guessed. Then, they have to say a sentence about themselves. Example:
 Jun Yu: I am never afraid before.
 Wei Jeen: I am afraid when my mother scolds me.
 Yun Wen: I am happy when I get presents.
 Kwong Yong: I am happy because I have many friends in the class.
 Yun Xin: I am angry when somebody snatches my chair.

Good and bad values.

Thursday (05/08/2010)
a) Taking turns.
• When are the other situations that we have to take turns? Why it is necessary? Did Mr. Gru line up too?
• Consequences: injuries, accidents, misunderstanding, quarrelling, no love.
The kids substituted the underlined phrase with their thoughts. Among:
Oh, we take turns,
When we take the chairs,
‘Cause that’s what’s right,
For girls and boys, (x 3)
Oh, we take turns,
When we take the chairs,

- When we wash our hands,
- When we want to speak,
- When we take pencils,
- When we take erasers.
• Immediately, we used a masking tape to paste on the floor. 2 tapes to indicate 2 rows of chairs. We practiced once and it worked quite well. Hopefully, it will be a habit soon.

b) Our growing tree:Recap
• As this theme is quite abstract; Ithought recapping the values we have learnt so far is important.
• First: responsibility. Secondly: caring as in Aunty’s case and Bobby’s case study. After all, we are Rainbow Kids. Thirdly: Discipline – so that we take turns. Fourthly: Good values as in the movie “Despicable Me”.
• We discussed the good values of the movie:
- Telling bedtime stories to show that we care.
- Making a present for someone which we didn’t like doing previously.
- Using the Magic words to show good manners.
- Hugging is okay among friends (depends on culture) but kissing is only among parents and ourselves.
- Sharing such as donating our savings to help.
- Playing together.
- Learning from mistakes.
- Praising people for their good job!
- Never give up!
Bad values or negative values:
- Stealing. Don’t be a villain. (The kids heard this word from the movie and guessed that it meant a bad person).
- Competing and quarrelling.
- Bullying.
- Driving carelessly.
- Not being honest.

c) Drawing Continuation.
• We continued
drawing pictures of the movie “Despicable Me”.
• I introduced them to colour a frame around the picture. Overall, these kids have shown improvement at their drawings. Seeing once is definitely not enough…heee! 

Move Discussion

Wednesday (04/08/2010)

a) Song: Taking Turns.
· Persistent instruction is needed to remind the kids to line up at any activities. They have to learn to take turns, waiting patiently and tolerate their friends.
· The lyrics:
“ Oh, we take turns,
When we take the chairs,
‘Cause that’s what’s right,
For boys and girls,
‘Cause that’s what’s right,
For boys and girls,
Oh, we take turns,
When we take the chairs.”

b) The characters.
· First, I drew pictures of the characters to recall of the movie again. We also had a few posters to stimulate them. First, there was Mr. Gru; minions, the three orphans and also Vector. The kids were excited about the minions. Some had one eye, two eyes. There was also a girl and a baby. There were many of them in the movie.

c) Movie discussion.
· We sat in a “U” shape and discussed about our movie “Despicable Me” yesterday. First we answered the 4 questions given to the kids as a task while watching the movie. Jun Hong got 3 answers correctly and spoke mostly in English. I gave him an “apple” as a gift. The other kids also contributed their answers.
- What was Mr. Gru’s ambition as a kid? = astronaut
- What were the orphans’ names? = Margo, Edith and Agnes.
- How did their teacher punish them? = Box of Shame.
- Did Mr. Gru become a good man at the end? Give examples. = Yes, he became a good man. The kids gave a few examples.
Class: Mr. Gru brought the orphans to the funfair. He helped them from being bullied. Mr. Gru started telling bedtime stores to them. He even made his own story at the end.
Teacher: What changed him?
Class: The 3 girls. They loved him. They gave their piggy bank coins for his rocket project. The minions too gave their money to Mr. Gru.
Teacher: What did Mr. Gru steal? Was he successful and why?
Class: He stole the powerful gun and the moon. However, the gun was not powerful enough because at the end the moon boomed back to its original size and flew back to the space.
Teacher: What happened to Vector, the bad guy?
Class: He ended up being on the moon all by himself.
· Summary: Love can change a person. A bad guy is a person who has yet to change into a good person.

d) Drawing.
· The kids took an A4 paper and started drawing pictures of the movie “Despicable Me”.
· The boys liked drawing rockets and guns. The girls like drawing the orphans, Mr. Gru and also the minions. However, I requested the boys to add more pictures so that their drawing has a better message. They labeled the title of the movie. We shall continue with the drawing today.

Cinema: Despicable Me.

Tuesday (04/08/2010)

If I was given a chance to choose my toddler world, I would demand that I be sent to a thematic school! However, I am sincerely grateful to my parents……because of them; I am who I am today! These kids are really lucky!

a) Cinema!
l We all hopped into the bus about 9.30am and reached Jaya Jusco before 10am. We waited outside as the door was not opened yet. We managed to observe the surroundings. There were 7 recycle bins of different colours. However, they comprised mainly of boxes bin, paper bin, bottles bin, plastic bag bin, can bin and glass bin.

b) Care Bears Playground
l We approached the indoor playground. They played for about 20 minutes before entering the cinema. Finally, the moment came. Each kid sat at their seat and was given a small cup of popcorn. After finishing the food, we gave them some water. The kids from our class behaved well overall. They went to the toilet only once. In fact, some just sat there enjoying the movie. I believed introducing them to the movie yesterday had helped them to understand better. It was a great feeling to watch the movie with 90 friends and laughing together most of the time. Hilarious!

c) Late nap.
l The kids slept late and woke up at 4pm. After drinking water, we went to the playground for 15 minutes as they were still tired after the trip to the cinema. Then, they requested for tea break and so we had some buns and honey drink.

d) Decoration
l I wanted to discuss about the movie, Despicable Me。 Due to only 20minutes left, I decided it’s better we talk about the class decoration which is yet to complete.
l After the movie, we went to the indoor playground of Jaya Jusco. The first response was, “Teacher, look! Care Bears!” Wow…..indeed it was. That gave us more ideas during our discussions. The kids said they saw Friend Bear, flowers, flowering pot, the castle and also the cloud cars……Hooray!

e) The props.
l The kids continued with cutting their Hearts and stars which they painted last week. For butterflies, they pasted 2 hearts together and added 2 antennas on its head. For balloons, they took a yarn each from me and pasted to their hearts and even the stars. For flowers, they pasted 3 hearts and attached to straws. This time around, I didn’t prepare a lot of prop materials. They had to tell me what they want. If they want yarn, I shall give them. If they want straws, I shall give them. If they want colour paper, I would give them the recycled paper. I just hope that the kids could be more creative after doing so much craft and artwork for the year.

I like you because…..

Thursday (29/07/2010)

a) I like you because….
Jun Hong: Kwong Yong always follows wherever I go.
Teacher: Is that true?
Kwong Yong: I didn’t do it purposely?
Class: But…this is like always…..more than two weeks.
Teacher: I agreed. Is that true?
 After enquiries, he doens’t dislike Jun Hong…he just admires him….Qian Joe said because Jun Hong is very fair……haaa..:)
 I thought the kids to espress their feelings when they like somebody. Finally Kwong said this:
Kwong Yong: Jun Hong, I like you because you are a good boy. Can I be your good friend?
Jun Hong (smiling): Yes, Kwong Yong.
 When we share our feelings, we make the other friend feel happy too.
Yun Wen: Wee Hong always touches my hair.
Teacher: Is it true? Why?
Wee Hong: Yun Wen, I like your hair because it is beautiful.
Yun Wen (smiling): Thank you, Wee Hong.

b) Yan Shan.
 Tomorrow is Yan Shan’s last day because of transportation obstacle. She’s going to a kindergarten in her neighbourhood.
 Thus, we sat on chairs in a big circle. Yan Shan sat in the middle and she lent us her Teddy Bear and we passed around as we listen to the music. As the music stops, the kid who holds the bear has to say good things about Yan Shan.
Kids: Yan Shan, you are cute. Yan Shan, you are a nice friend. Yan Shan, you are beautiful. Yan Shan, you have improved. Yan Shan, you are a happy girl! Yan Shan, we shall miss you. Of course, Yan Shan smiles all the time.

c) A Gift for Yan Shan.
 Each kid took a different colour paper and started drawing pictures for Yan Shan. Some drawings were about bears, love, rainbow, dragons, friends and also flowers. I did the cover page
and also attached an A4 photo of the class for her binding pictures.

d) Discussion: Aunty.
 The kids saw their huge painted heart and praised it. They then signed their names around the heart. Tomorrow we shall sing a few songs. Chun Kit was excited who would cook for us after aunty has left…..haaa!  The kids said they like Aunty’s favourite Bak Kut The. Thus, they will interview aunty about it if we have enough time tomorrow.

Case Study: Young Bobby.

Wednesday (28/07/2010)
a) Caring qualities.
* How do we show that we are caring? At first, kids could only think of love. How do we show that we love? We did a case study and this is the summary:
- Caring is listening. Caring is helping people honestly. Caring is to be kind. Caring is able to forgive and move on. Caring is to learn from mistakes. Caring is to say thank you. Caring is sharing.

b) Case Study: Young Bobby.
* I drew pictures on the board to help at their imagination.
Bobby has a happy family, only parents and himself. Imagine that he is one of our classmates. However, his relatives live very far from Malaysia. One day, his parents got very sick. He didn’t come to school for a week. He was scared and didn’t know what to do. This 5-year old boy was very scared! Question: What can we do to help him? How can we care for him? (Everyone was seriously thinking about this situation).
Foo Soon: Call his house.
Qian Joe: Send him to the Orphanage.
Yun Xin: Send him to the hospital. Ask the nurse to give him an extra bed.
Teacher: He doesn’t pick the call because he was very scared of being alone. He is not an orphan. Hospital doesn’t accept kids and take care of them just because the kids’ parents are sick in the hospital.
Qian Joe: We can buy food for his parents.
Yun Wen: Ask a teacher to check his house. We can also go together to talk to him. Shi Jie: Let him stay in the school.
Teacher: …..but there won’t be anyone in school to take care of him.
Wee Hong: How about his soap to bathe?
Class: We can share with him.
Yun Wen: Bobby can stay in teacher’s house.
Teacher: Good idea! Teachers may allow him to stay at their houses until things got better.
• We thought for a while that such things would not happen to us. However, if anything happens to us, we do hope that we could get assistance too.

c) A gift for Aunty.
* We continued with our craft. Gee…..the heart frame is quite big and heavy for aunty…….haaa……but is is indeed special. We thought about the suitable colours. Foo Soon suggested orange and yellow for the background. The girls preferred red and pink for the heart. So, we took turns to paint the heart. The kids were amazed how I got pink. Where did I get light purple too? Haa……! Red + white = pink. Purple + white = light purple.
* Finally, 5 kids volunteered for their tiny hands to stamp on the background. It was quite pretty.
* We also captured a photo together with Aunty in the morning so that we could paste on the gift.
* Meanwhile, some kids cut the loves and stars they painted so as to continue with the class decoration. I explained to Zhe Qing that we had to stop fully decorating our class at the moment because we had to do what is important first. Aunty’s retirement were only made known last week.

d) The Heart Book
* These are the kids who returned the book: Chun Kit, Zheng Yuan, Jun Yu, Zhe Qing, Shi Jie and also Xing Tong. The other kids were reminded of their responsibility. The class is still clean except books which are not properly kept. Reminder is necessary.

Farewell, Aunty!

Friday (30/0702010)

It's not easy for kids to understand the meaning of departure unless that someone is really close to them. Only 2 kids could express their feelings to Aunty. Of course, Aunty patiently waited for their simple speech and was so moved by our farewell session.

a) Farewell Aunty.
Aunty came to our class at 2.45p.m. We make a heart shape to welcome her. First, the kids sang 2 songs: I love you ad also Care-a-lot. They were shy to dance and furthermore, they just woke up from nap….haaaa! Each kid took turns to give aunty their heart present and whispered some words to aunty. Some said they shall miss aunty’s bak kut the. Some said aunty worked hard to cook for us. Some said thank you. Then, the kids gave Aunty our huge Heart Present. Aunty said it was beautiful and couldn’t believed that it was made from recycled newspaper. The kids queued to give aunty some “Nescafe” in a tiny cup as that is Aunty’s favourite drink.

b) Storybook: The Boy who cried Wolf.
• Zhi Feng and Foo Soon were attracted with the p ictures of this book. Thus, I shared the story with the class.
• A shepherd boy who led his flock of sheep to the hill top for grazing grass. He was bored and played a trick on the villagers. When he cried “wolf”, many villagers brought their weapons and came to help. The shepherd boy giggled and said there the wolf must had gone away. Believing him, the villagers asked him to be careful. The ext day, he played the same trick again. This time, he laughed loudly and the villagers realized that they were fooled! Thus, they warned the kids not to repeat his mistake and waste the villagers’ time. A few days later, a sheep really came and the shepherd’s scream was of no use. The villagers laughed when they heard his screams thinking that it was another trick! Morale: We must be honest. We must also correct our mistakes when given a chance. Otherwise, we shall not have good friends.

c) The values.
• To assist the kids understand what he have been learning so far, I drew a tree trunk with the word “Rainbow Kids” in it. The branches represent our ongoing lessons and the values we learnt. Briefly:
- Care =responsible, love, sharing, helping, honest, bringing happiness, the magical words “thank you”.

d) Craft: Recycled Newspaper.
• The kids loved their hand-made Aunty’s present so much that they wanted a small craft for themselves. First, they sketched the pictures they wanted. This was already done on Monday.
• Each kid applied some glue onto their picture. Then, they took a handful of blended newspaper and squeezed to make it dry. They mixed it with some glue and applied to their picture. Initially, they found it sticky but then they started to enjoy themselves when they see the mould they made. I reminded them that once we paint the mould with poster colour, it would be pretty.
They agreed!
The 6 year-old kids used their imagination to make a tortoise and wow, it was nice and attracted the other kids.
