Our Story

Wednesday (27/10/2010)

a) Our Dance.
* We continued with the dance. Today's third step was more challenging with kids pairing with their partner and turning around and clapping. They would do that for 4 rounds. Overall, they had remembered the steps except the rhythm is not neat yet. Furthermore, a few kids really neede discipline reminder to participate.

b) Our Story
* To give the kids the overall idea of how can a team produce a role-play or movie. First, a script followed by choosing casts and also the necessary props. Then, the Director will guide them with their actings. So, I will be the Director but we decide the story together.
* We are throwing a surprised birthday party for Peter Pan in Disneyland. The residents including Minnie Mouse, Dumbo, Michael Jackson, Cinderella and Ultraman walked around to do a simple fashion show. Then, they watched Michael performed for a while before being attacked by Captain Hook and his pirates. They were tied and brought to the ship. Then, the pirates started were talking about peter pan wondering if he would save his friends. Of course, he came and he was with Tinker Bell. They fought and fought and finally, Captain Hook fell into the creek and crocodile was very happy to gobble Captain Hook and the pirates.

The Hat Quill

Friday (22/10/2010)

a) Making The Quill
• A few kids came to me saying that, “I don’t have a quill at home.”
• Thus, we learnt to make a quill out from the cardboard.
• Each kicd was given a rectangle paper. They folded it into two and reopened it so to have the middle line. Then, they drew a semi circle on the line. Then, they coloured it with the colour of their choice. Some were colourful, some preferred a simple one. Then, they pasted the quill with glittering purple and silver paper as to give the effect of a hairy quill. Then, they pasted onto their hat and were excited being Peter pan.

b) Review.
• We reviewed about Peter pan the cartoon movie. The Red Indian chief had caught the Lost Children thinking that they took her daughter, Princess Tiger Lily away. Meanwhile, Peter pan and Wendy were at the Mermaid Lagoon and saw Captain Hook capturing Princess Tiger Lily. He quickly saved her intelliegently. He used his echo to trick the pirates.
• The Red Indian was so happy that he had a little campfire party to celebration his daughter’s safety. He also welcomed Peter pan and the lost children as new friends. Meanwhile, captain Hook tricked Tinker Bell easily as she was jealous of Wendy. Tinker bell showed Captain Hook Peter Pan’s home place. Tinker bell made Hook promised her not to harm Peter Pan. Will Captain Hook hold to his promise? To be continued….

Peter Pan's Hat

Thursday (21/10/2010)

a) Treasure hunt
After recapping the song of “Folowing The Leader” while marching with fun, I wrote a question on the board。
“ Would you like to go to Never Never Land?” It is an invitation but the guests (the kids) need to hunt for a treasure before going there.
* They had to search for 6 scrolls of letters tied with a golden thread. 2 were in our classroom, 1 in phonics, 2 at the school hall and 1 in the canteen.
* They were told to be as quiet as can be so that the pirates would not track them for their treasure. The kids were very obedient and they were so excited. Chun Kit found it in the treasure chest, Zhi Feng one under the chair, Yun Xin found one behind the picture and Wee Hong found one near the staircase while Qian Joe found one stuck to the long dragon model.

b) The clue instruction.
* The kids rearranged the words and it sounded, "You must make a quill hat". Each kid must make a hat in order to visit Never never Land.

c) The hat craft.
* Each kid was given a rectangle cardboard. They folded into half and creased hard. Then, they reopened the cardboard to fold both ends to the centre similar to a plane craft. Only Natalie, Xiang Wei, Zhi Feng needed prompting.
* Then, they pasted with cellophanetape and started putting onto their head.
* Each table was given brushes, plates and green poster colour. The kids were advised not to add too much water as the cardboard would get soaked and torn easily. They painted with determination and really enjoyed themselves. I advised them to paint twice to produce a better looking hat.

d) The quill.
* The kids were advised to look for a quill at home so that they could attcah to the hat. Otherwise, we would make the quill tomorrow. To be continued......

Hand Shadow Play

Wednesday (20/10/2010)

a) I am a storyteller.
On Monday, I asked the kids to think of their stories involving the butterfly and other characters. Only 3 took the initiative. They were Yun Xin, Zheng Yuan and Chun Kit. Yun Xin \shared about butterfly being friend witrh Doraemon. She really tried speaking English the whole lesson. Zheng Yuan told us a story about the hungry butterfly who ate a lot of food. Then, I added the character of a hungry bird which wanted to eat the butterfly and later saved by Tinkerbell. Chun Kit told us his story about his caterpillar and Peter Pan.
The kids took turn to be the emcee. They enjoyed it. The other kids were inspired to tell their own story from the spot. For being initiative, I rewarded everyone. However, for the 3 most initiative kids, they were awarded with jelly.

b) Hand Shadow.
I turned off the lights and we talked a little about the shadow. With light anywhere, we can see shadows. There are a few ways to play with shadow. Shadow theatre, hand shadow and body shadow. Thus, we started practising hand shadow.
First, I taught them the bird shadow. Then, the crocodile shadow. Wee Hong came to teach us the peacock. Zhi Feng taught us the snake. Qian Joe taught us the cat.

c) Yun Xin’s shadow book.
We looked through at Yun Xin’s book. Then, we played a game called, “Please guess me. Who am I?”
The kids took turn to come to me and choose a shadow pattern. Then they stood beside the lamp behind the white cloth and played with their hands. The other kids guessed.
Among: Jun Yu as an owl, Chia Yen as a woodpecker, Kwong Yong as an eagle, Shawn as a dinosaur. The other shadow figures were a rabbit, a peacock, a snake and an elephant.

Our Sock Puppet

Monday (18/10/2010)

a) Storybook: Am I as good as I look?
 Kwong Yong brought this book to share with us.
 A story about a baby snail who thought that it looked ugly with a heavy and hard shell to carry everywhere. Also, its eyes are not on the face but on the tentacles.
 It met many insects and envied them. The ant has 6 legs and could walk swiftly. The fish could swim in the water. The butterfly could fly high.
 Finally, it saw a tortoise and asked if the tortoise would like to be other animals. The tortoise said “No” as it felt that its shell could protect it from harm. It also kept it warm.
 As the little snail was thinking, it felt so sad and nobody could understand it. At this moment, a cat was chasing a butterfly. As it could fly high, it saw the slow snail which crawled very slowly. Finally, the snail got panicked and screamed to the little ant, “If only I could walk quickly like you, then I would be safe!” The ant screamed back, “Hide in your shell!”. The snail quickly listened to its advice and then was safe from the cat’s hunger. 
Moral: Everyone is special. When we feel sad, many small troubles will look very big. Thus, talk over our problems to parents and good friends. Listen and think wisely.

b) Hand and sock puppet.
 We recapped various puppets we did previously. They were stick puppets, finger puppets. There is also a string puppet which I made and there are also school hand puppets.
 Only a few brought socks for this activity As for the rest, I told them that if they still want to make sock puppets, then they can still bring it to school. Thus, who didn’t bring would use paper to make into hand puppet.
 For this stage, a lot of kids still need guidance. Thus, we did butterfly for this activity as it also relates to our story of Tinker Bell in Peter Pan.
 The butterfly parts: face, body, 6 legs, wings and antenna.
 I prepared a few recycled items and the kids could use them to be as creative as possible. Example: wire thread, straws, cloth, pieces of short ribbons. They were advised to use them wisely and share with their friends.
 Those who used paper would roll the paper and paste them. So that their hand would be inside the paper. Those who used socks, learnt to get use to the hand movement.
 Next, the kids drew the butterfly parts on a piece of cardboard. They coloured and cut them. Next, they used double sided tape to paste them. As for the eyes and antennas, they could use wire thread. As for the six legs, they could use short straws.
 Eventually, their puppets were ready and some started queuing behind the puppet theatre and tried to play with them.

c) Homework Task: My story.
• The kids were asked to think of a story about their butterfly character. They are welcomed to mix with their stick and finger puppets made last 2 weeks. They can also draw new characters and I will provide them straws to make as puppets.

d) Song: Following The Leader
• This is a song from Peter Pan’s Cartoon Movie and it is a very fun song. The kids were having a challenging time to sing the chorus but they turned out well. I aim to choose an interesting song for the kids to perform. I still need them to hint me about their most favourable one. 

Our Puppet Theatre Craft

Friday (15/10/2010)

a) My sample
* I brought in a simple puppet theatre made by myself. Then, a few kids volunteered to come forward to perform a short puppet story. They were Zhi feng, Chun Kit, Xing Tong, Yun Xuan and Yun Xin. They chose their favourite stick and finger puppets. They told about Captain Hook and Peter Pan's adventure. With this, the kids had an idea how we can make use of the puppet theatre.

b) Little Carpenters.
* We thanked Chun kit and Zhe Qing for bringing boxes for our puppet theatre craft. We discussed how ad what to do. 4 kids volunteered making the roof. They were Xing Tong, Yun Xin, Qian Joe and Yu Xuan. They drew a lot of hills similar to a castle shape and coloured them nicely. Jun Yu ad Zheng yuan helped to decorate the theatre wall. Zheng Yuan cut pieces of colour paper while Jun Yu pasted them. I was very happy to see Jun Yu being so serious at this. :) Wee Hong and Kwong Yong decided to decorate the inner part of the theatre. Meanwhile, the 4 year old kids preferred to draw pictures as wall decoartions. They drew beautifully. Xiang Wei asked if he could add lanterns to the theatre which I welcomed his idea. The others assisted at decoarating the front view of the box. That included the curtain and also its ribbon. Meawhile, Chun Kit preferred to decoarte the extra box into a treasure chest. He made a skull and bone picture the other day which he was happy to paste onto the box. Some kids inquired about the items to be kept in the chest. They were quite interested about the pirates as our phonics lesson is currently about "The Ship and Pirates".

c) Enquiries.
Chun Kit: Teacher, how can we go into this small box and perform?
Teacher: This is a small theatre for puppets. If we really are going to perform, we would have to get onto a big stage and have the backgrounds and props ready.
Zhe Qing: Teacher, when are we making our sock puppet?
Teacher: Only when everyone brings a clean sock. After playing with different puppets and activities, thenn we can decide on our desired stage performance. :)

KLCC Petroscience

Tuesday(12/10/2010)

a) The journey
• The kids got so excited. They sat with their partners in the bus, chatting and luahing non-stop. Some shared their stories, Zhe Qing played with her handkerchief making different crafts such as flowers etc.
• We reached KLCC Twin Towers at 10 am and played at the playground for about 45 minutes. Then, we went for lunch at 11.10 at KFC. Yee Xuan and Soon Yu were having vegetarian meals. A toy would be given to them in school.

b) The Space Ball.
• Kids queued up to aboard the “gondola” which looked like a Spaceship ball bringing us through a dark tunnel to reach its science centre. The tunnel was like a rainforest…..dark and mysterious.
• At the first phase of science centre, we saw lots of game and experiment stations. There were shadow plays, reflection play, the mini contruction play and a little lorry for kids to drive pretentiously.
• Secod phase was the Dinosaur Age. They introduced the soil and how the dead animals decomposted as petrol.Suddenly, there was athunderstorm. Our helicopter had to fly through the thick dark clouds. The helicopter became very shaky. Fortunately, we embraced it successfully. As we laded on the Helipad, the helicopter door opened and we went to a platform model. The kids saw the petrol digger, its machines, the colour of the petrol. They also saw the crews’ cabin and brief lifestyle.

c) More stations.
• There were many Intelligence games. Among: The handball speed game, Lego Race game, the Light game, the jumping speed game, F1 drive. Next, we went to the 3D-Theatre movie about Dinky the Dinosaur. It featured the friendship between a meat eater and plant eater dinosaur.
• Our last phase was near the theatre. There were blocks station, keyboard station, magic trick station and finally “Print yourself” a postcard” station.
• Then, we queued up to get aboard the Space Ball. There was a long queue. So, we started inging with “Friends are Special”. Then, “Rasa Sayang, Burung Kakak Tua, The Rainbow song and finally, a Mandarin song: you yong de ren”. It was just awesome any many people were smiles looking at us. So, parents; your kids are really magical! Thank you.

My Finger Puppet.

Monday (11/10/2010)
a) Finger Puppet
 I brought in a few drawing books. They displayed step by step drawing of cartoon characters. I have also drawn a few Peter Pan characters on the paper to guide them. My instruction was to draw a picture of person and if time permits, they can draw any animal pictures by searching through the books.
 I drew circles as Peter Pan’s face and extended to his face features, his hat, his body and also his pants and legs. I drew another simpler version to guide the 4-year old kids.
 The girls requested that I draw Wendy or rather a girl character. I used step by step method to guide them.

b) Drawing time.
 Each kid was given a small piece of paper. They drew their desired pictures. I would say that they drew rather independently. Only a few kids needed my initial prompting. They were Soon Yu, Xiang Wei, Yu Xuan, Natalie and Shawn. The others were surprisingly determined.

c) Rolling the paper.
 We tried using recycld materials to make our crafts. Thus, those finished drawing; took a small piece of cardboard and rolled. Then, they pasted with cellophane tape. Next, they attached their pictures to the rolled cardboard. They were excited to bring home. I would only allow them afterI laminate those pictures. They were encouraged to make their own stories.

d) Discussion.
* The kids liked the idea of making a puppet house. However, I needed their co-operation to bring big boxes (if any). Oterwise, we would have to combine 2 small boxes. This puppet house will be very useful for the kids’ creativeness and exploration.

Our Puppet Story。

Thursday (07/10/2010)

Vocabulary: Puppet.
a) Organising files.
l The kids were given their worksheets together with parents’ letters. Then, I sealed the plastic holder for them before they place into their bags.

b) Puppets.
Teacher: What dis we learn yesterday? How did I tell the story?
l I used “puppet” method to delivery the story.
l There are various puppets. Example: Stick puppets, finger puppets, hand puppets, sock puppets. I asked the kids to go home and think of ways to create puppets. The cartoon characters which the kids coloured yesterday were laminated into puppets. Only pictures which were properly coloured were laminated. I distributed to the kids and they excitedly pasted onto their straws.
l Then, I introduced some other puppets of the school. Example: the Octopus hand puppet, the cow hand puppet, the duck hand puppet, the tiger finger puppet, the bear finger puppet.
l Then, I let the kids feel the puppets and experiment with them….wow!!....was their exclamation…haaa!

c) The puppet stage.
* Chun Kit: Teacher, we should carry a table onto the stage.
* Kwong Yong: Teacher, what about 3 tables on the floor surrounding the stage.
* Thus, I got a few kids to pushed the stage slightly to the middle of the class. We tried Kwong Yong’s method. Well, the kids could see me or even their friend hiding behind the table. Thus, we tried Chun Kit’s method. It worked. Then, I laid 3 a big cloth over the table so that the kids can’t see the puppeteer. When, a few kids stepped onto the stage, it wasn’t high enough for them. Thus, I added 3 baskets onto the table and it was more comfortable for the kids to place their arms on the table.

d) My simple story.
* I took a few puppet characters and created a simple short story.
* I brought in Captain Hook who was fighting with Peter Pan. Just then, an octopus came by. The class immediately sang the Phonics song “The Ship”… haaaa! The octopus said it wanted to eat Captain Hook who quickly fled away. Tinker Bell rescued Wendy and the lost children. Everyone laughed at Captain Hook and clapped at the end of my puppet show.
* The kids were divided into groups of three. They can choose any charcters they want and create any simple short story. Yee Xuan’s group talked about the octopus, duck and Tinker Bell. Chun Kit’s group talked about Peter Pan’s adventure with the Red Indians. They also sang the “Red Indian” song. Qian Joe’s group talked about Peter Pan and 2 Tinker Bells. They sang the song “Friends are special”. Jun Yu’s group was about the octopus, Peter Pan and Wendy.
* Though the kids’ story were quite messy, but it was a great inspiration as they ask for more.

A Puppet Story-Telling.

Wednesday (06/10/2010)

Vocabulary: story-telling, characters.
a) A Puppet Story-telling.
* I laminated a few important characters and pasted with a straw each. Then, I covered a table with a cloth and hid behind the table. The characters were: Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinker bell, Captain hook, pirates, the lost children and the hungry crocodile.
* In fact, some of the kids came to help coloured them at corner playing. They turned out beautifully.

b) Recap and continuation.
* Today, the kids also paid a fee but it raised up to RM2 as the kids were excited about the story. :)
* I recapped the story using the puppet.
* Continuation: Captain Hook was chased away by the crocodile. He was afraid of the crocodile because it bit off its right arm in the past and found it delicious. Thus, the crocodile was always eager to snap Captain Hook's other body part.
* Captain Hook and his pirates did not give up. Captain Hook had another idea. This time, he trapped Tinker Bell by arousing her jealousy of pretty Wendy. Fearing that peter pan would dislike her, she agreed to assist Captain Hook. She assisted him to trap the Lost Boys and also the darling children. When Peter pan could not find them, he called Tinker Bell. Her face showed that she had done something bad. Peter pan was curious and forced her to tell the truth. She revealed her evil doing and Peter Pan chased her away for being angry. Peter Pan immediately went to rescue them on the Pirate Ship. Meanwhile, realizing of her mistake, Tinker bell wanted to remedy for what she did. She flew to the pirate Ship and also tried rescuing them. Of course, Peter pan came in time just to save Wendy from jumping off the plank. Peter fought with Captain Hook. Both fought aggressively and Peter tricked him to the top of the ship. Finally, Captain heard the “tick tock” sound of the crocodile and he started shiver…….aaahhhh! Peter forced Captain hook to jump and as he jumped crocodile waited for him with mouth ajar. However, Captain hook used his hook to save himself. Ahhh……..everyone was watching. With all his might, Captain Hook swam quickly and save himself.

c) Class decoration.
Zhe Qing said that the class should be decorated like Peter Pan’s story.
Thus, each kid chose their preferred choice of picture and started colouring. I told them that if they coloured nicely with love, I shall laminate their pictures. It would last and also they can choose to make it as puppets.

Story-telling

Monday (04/10/2010)

a) Story-telling.
* Jun Yu gave me a book and told me that he would like to tell us a story. I was very proud of his effort. The title was "In The Garden". Everyone sat down quietly while listening to his rather soft voice. :)
* he read very well with little prompting from me. At first round, we listened to his reading. At second reading, the kids read after me. Then, I started sketching a garden with different insects on the board. Kids were so excited that they started talking about each insect.

b) "In The Garden".
* Caterpillars are found on leaves. They eat lots of leaves.
Qian Joe: Then they would change into a cocoon.
Xing Tong: Then, into a butterfly.
*Ants are found on the ground.
* They have six legs.
Jun Yu: The beetles are so big, how can ants carry them?
Teacher: Ants are very co-operative, they travel in a troupe of army.
- Ants eat just about anything.
* Worms are found in the ground.
Zheng Yuan: Worms make the plants grow more healthily.
- The holes made will allow Oxygen to flow in and gardeners need not worry to continue digging.
Shawn: Worms are scary.
- Actually, worms eat up carcass or dead bodies and add fertilizer into the soil. Otherwise, the Earth will be filled with carcasses......oh gosh!! Thank you, worms!
* Grasshoppers are found on the grass.
- They can hop far and fly too. There are big and small ones.
* Bees are found in a hive.
Jun Yu: The big ones are wasps.
Chun Kit: Be careful, they can sting people.
Yun Xin: We must see the doctor immediately.
- When bees sting us, they will also die because they can part with their sting at the abdomen. People at least could quickly seek a doctor’s treatment.
* Spiders are found on a web.
Shawn: Are spiders sticky?
- No, they aren’t. However, their webs are sticky as to trap their prey as food. Some insects fly and get caught there. Example: flies, moths, cockroaches. Spiders also catch their preys themselves. Some spiders are poisonous.
* Lots of insects are found in the garden.

c) Body Movement.
l The kids chose the characters they wanted to be. Among: Xing Tong as a flower, Yee Xuan as a caterpillar, Yun Xin and Yee Xuan as the ant, Qian Joe as a donut, Kwong Yong and Shawn as bees while Zhi Feng as a tree. Jun Yu, Zheng Yuan, Soon Yu, Xiang Wei as spiders and the rest pretended to be a big house.
l Qian Joe was creative as he unfolded himself as a donut. Wee Hong as the worm and Shawn as the rabbit. J The kids were enthusiastic.
l Later, we performed as a class playing the “freeze” game. This is to allow the kids having the idea of various movements. Example: Be a butterfly……they will fly and “freeze”! Be a spider……they will crawl and “freeze”!

d) Little Disneyland Castle.
l The kids chose their duties. Qian Joe and Xing Tong wanted to make a fence surrounding the castle. Theothers wanted to cut their coloured pictures and placed as a parade within the castle. Chia Yen was engrossed to make ice-cream. Kwong Yong led the kids to make Disneyland flags. Shawn laughed happily seeing their flags saying it looked like “MERDEKA”. Haaa……in a way, yes!

Peter Pan

Tuesday (05/10/2010)

a) Welcome.
· Kwong Yong brought a storybook about a snail’s adventure. Yee Xuan brought a book about bunnies. It was a crafty storybook. Yesterday, I told the class that we would start Peter Pan. So, I gave them a choice to vote on which book they want to learn about today. More than 10 kids voted Peter Pan. Ay….ay…ay……class!
· We created a simple situation whereby our story-telling session is like a cinema. The kids queued up and each had to pay me RM1 as a fee to enter the story-telling Cineplex. Wow! The taller ones sat on the chairs while the shorter ones in front.

b) Peter Pan.
· I didn’t have the storybook. However, I printed colouring pages from the web and compiled them into a storybook. It’s quite good. J
· First, the characters were introduced.
· Wendy the sister of John and youngest brother, Michael. They are the children of Darling Family. Their parents were out for a party. These were happy kids who always imagined the adventure of Peter Pan. Peter Pan had been peeping them all the while without their knowledge. One day, his shadow flew into the room not wanting to co-operate with Peter. Peter had Tinker bell, the magical fairy to help searching. They were clumsy and the noise woke the kids up. Peter saw his shadow and chased it. It took some glue to stick but the kids laughed. Wendy volunteered to sew for him. Seeing her ability, peter invited them to Never-Never Land. The living beings there will never grow old and are always happy. John and Michael were excited but Wendy thought of the responsibility. Peter lured her with mermaids, pirates and magic and immediately, with Tinker Bell’s magical dust; they started floating and flying into the sky. Nana, their dog was barking as if it wanted to join them. Never-Never Land was very far. They had to travel pass the space to get there.
· When they reached there, they saw a wide blue ocean and some mermaids pulled Wendy’s dress wanted her to join in. Wendy was very pretty. At Peter’s home, he introduced his Lost Boys (6 of them) to them. Yeewww…..they were very dirty, smelly and naughty too. They wanted Wendy to be their mother. Wendy said “No” and they started sobbing. Feeling sorry for them, Wendy promised to tell them stories. Immediately, the Lost Boys loved their new guests. J
· The next day, peter showed the Darling kids around the Island. He told them to be careful with pirates especially Captain Hook. They went to visit their friends, the Red Indian colony. They were happy to see Peter and friends. Captain Hook had an idea to kidnap the Red Indian Princess. He tied her and placed her on a big rock. Captain Hook also tied the Lost Boys at the Red Indian Camp. Luckily, Peter Pan and Wendy peeped at him. Suddenly, Peter flew high in the sky and scared Captain Hook. He fought with him. Then, the hungry crocodile appeared. Captain was afraid of it and started to lose thoughts. He shivered. Peter Pan quickly rescued Princess Lily, the Red Indian Princess. Meanwhile, the crocodile chased Captain Hook who swam quickly to escape. The Lost Boys laughed at that sight. The kids in the class too. As I stopped telling the story, the kids pleaded me to continue. I promised I would tomorrow as it was time for playground.

Disneyland Castle

Thursday (30/10/2010)

a) Disneyland Castle.
· We invited Foo Soon from next door for 10 minutes to share with us his experience in Disneyland, Hong Kong. We were very glad because he had snapped photos and enlarged them. Among, he snapped photos with Snow White, Barbie Dolls, Cinderella and also Mickey Mouse. He also brought 2 files with Disneyland Castle. Woohhh……was the kids’ exclaimed! It is amazing. Foo Soon said that there were parades, there were performances such as singinging and dancing sessions, the mascots were as tall as teacher. Foo Soon said he also saw the blue ant mascot shaking hands and taking photos with many people. There were shoppings, swimming pools, parks and hotels. He said he was very very happy.
· Zhi Feng also shared his photos of Disneyland with the class. We saw a colourful ferry there and there were a few statues including Dumbo. He also showed us photos of KLIA airport.
· Yun Xin and wee Hong asked why they couldn’t just drive car there. I drew the world map and showed them that there is sea and ocean. Either ship or planes could cross and travel to another country. However, Singapore is linked to Malaysia with a bridge.
· Many people have yet being to Disneyland because of the distance and their free time was my explanation to kids. However, we can learn about it from television, video clip or listen to friends’ sharings.

b) 3D Castle.
· The kids were enthusiastic about the castle and we decided to make a castle for the cartoon characters we discussed yesterday. Cartoons which do not belong to Disney such as Ultraman can always visit his friends there.:)
· As we had been doing a lot of craft work before, I thought let’s try a more challenging task whereby kids have to assemble small parts of 3D puzzles into a big castle. Thus, team work is very important and they also have to be able to read the numbers.
· The kids chose their partners, some I paired them up so that the better one can guide the other partner.
· Each pair was given a board of puzzle and they started pushing the parts out from the big piece. Then, they placed the small parts into a bowl. Only Yun Xin knew how to assemble. The others I had to guide them. Half of the class were able to identify the numbers and and fixed them to the gap. Thus, this would be a good board game for kids at home to challenge their motor skill, mathematical skill and patience.
· About 30 minutes later, I gave the kids some cartoon characters to colour as to add onto our Disneyland Castle. Meanwhile, the kids were called two by two for guidance to assemble the castle. We actually made up almost 85% of the castle. Wow! The kids actually got a lot of guidance from Zhe Qing and Yun Xin. We shall continue with the ending touch up tomorrow.

Little Disneyland

Friday (01/10/2010)

a) Walt Disney
l Walter Disney was the founder of Disneyland and also the creator of Mickey Mouse. When he was a boy, he always helped his parents in the farm. He enjoyed drawing and sketching in his free time. When he was 16, he applied for the position in the army force but was rejected because he was underage. Then, he got a job as an ambulance driver. His ambulance was pasted with all his drawings. Then, he went to Hollywood with very little money to pursue his dreams. He was assisted by his older brother. Walt Disney introduced cartoons and then built Disneyland as he believed that this is a happy land for all. Before he passed away, he set up California Institute of Arts hoping to share his knowledge and experience with the younger generation. Nickey Mouse was the pioneer of Disneyland and when coloured production was introduced, the original black and white Mickey Mouse cartoon series became more interesting with colours….wow!

b) Mickey mouse cartoon.
l Yun Xin shared with us her DVD. Thus, I turned on this first short chapter as Mickey Mouse and Friends introduction.
l Mickey was the host of a Christmas Party. He invited almost every character of Disneyland including “Beauty and the Beast, Pooh, Donald Duck, The Lion King, Snow White, Goofy” and many more.
l The first episode featured Mickey mouse sharing the story of Donald Duck and his nephews. His nephews were busy preparing a Snowman for a contest. They made it so beautifully. However, Uncle Donald Duck was skating and accidentally hit and destroyed the snowman. The nephews were so angry that they started playing tricks on their uncle. It was funny but without adults’ guidance; kids can easily learn the tricks and practiced on others.

c) Let’s vote!
Teacher: What would you like to perform?
Class: Songs, dance, drama, fashion show.
Wow, I guessed the kids need to try on every aspect before deciding what is really their passion for the year end concert. Then, the kids voiced out their desired story to learn about. Among, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Cinderella, Toy Story and Winnie The Pooh. Kids were given two voting chances. The results: 10 chose Peter Pan, 9 chose Dumbo, 3 chose Cinderella, 5 chose Toy Story and 2 chose Winnie The Pooh.
Then, we thought of the thematic title. Some suggested “Music, Dance and Perform!”, “Magic Kids” and “Little Disneyland”. Majority voted “Little Disneyland”. Woh….woh….woh!
