Our Chinese New Year Song

22/01/2009 (Thursday)

a) Our Chinese New Year Song

We listened to the Chinese New Year song of Chinese version.
Then, the kids interpreted what they heard.
Cymbals make the sound of ding ding ding ding dang.
Drums made the sound of tong tong tong tong chiang.
Fire works made the sound of ping ping ping ping pang.
Then, we tried singing the song in English.
It’s funny but they like the chorus bestJ

b) Dragon Dance Training
The kids got back into their groups. Some wqnted to change positions. So, we swapped around to give everyone a chance to play dragon, cymbals and also the drum.
We did it without Mr. Hoo as he was busy today. However, the kids were quite independent. Again, the challenging part was making the wave part.
We even did bowing to the audience; which were their friends.

c) Discussion
We talked about the purpose of our hardwork training.
The kids wanted to perform together with the Lion Dance when school reopens on 2nd February. It was Ze Yan’s suggestion.
Eugene even suggested that we do this at year end on our graduation performance. Wow…..sounds great but lots of hard work.
We also thought that we should perform to our schoolmates on the last day of Chinese New Year. Hopefully, we can do it together with our TV card.

Our Training Session

21/01/2009 (Wednesday)

a) The Pearl Ball

· The kids preferred the yellow ball as it was smoother. So, we thought of ideas to tie the balloon ball to a bamboo stick.
· We used tapes and also ribbons to tie. Finally, the knot became tighter….:)

b) The Cymbals
· We took the tin covers. We pasted small plastic cups to them as handles.
· The girls were in-charged of the cymbals while the boys were in-charged of the pearl ball.

c) Our Invited Trainer
· Mr. Hoo is actually the Principal of our Kindergarten. He was once the Dragon dance team player in his schooldays.
· Earlier, we wrote him a letter to invite him. He was wiling to train us.
· Mr. Hoo briefed the kids about the important part of this activity. Most importantly, discipline, team work and strength. The Dragon head must follow the pearl ball. The players must follow the player in front of him or her.
· There were 3 groups altogether. Jen Ning preferred playing the drum while Le Xin; the cymbals. However, they did try out the dragon model.
· They practised the normal walk. Next, the did the wave movement; the challenging one!
· They were tired but very happy!

d) Beat Of The Drum
· Thanks so much to Zi Jun and family for lending us thwie drum.
· Later, Mr. Hoo played the drum while we listened to the beat. It was interesting. We shall continue training tomorrow.

Our dragon is now meaty!

20/01/09 (Tuesday)

a) Flash cards.

· We revised the related vocabulary words: happy, people, Dragon Dance, palace, king etc.

b) Dissecting our Dragon Model.

· The tail and body is ready. Only the head. The kids said the teeth, beard and part of the face were incomplete. Thus, Yun Zhe and Eugene were in-charged of the teeth. Wen Yue and Ze Yan were in-charged of the face. They wanted to draw thunderstorm on its face. Shu Wei, Jen Ning and Yun Wen focused on the side beard.

c) Painting The Pearl ball
· Jian Wei, Xin Ru, Shi Jie, Foo Soon, Jin Nan and Jing Kai painted the ball. They wanted it to be blue and yellow. They would decorate them today as we had to leave it to dry.

d) Enveloping the body and head.
· The other kids gathered and together we put in bags of sponge as the meat of our dragon. Now, our dargon is fat..said the kids!
· They had to balanced the length of thread between the body and tail. Then, they tied the short threads to tighten the body.
· Later, we also tied to the head when it is ready. Now, we have our modified powerful dragon……J.

Continuation Of Our Dragon Model

19/01/2009 (Monday)

a) Flashcards

· To recap words learnt: King, palace, soldier, garden, palace, happy, people, Dragon Dance, Lion Dance.

b) Seeking for answers - Video Clips
· The kids assured me that a dragon has no nose and legs. Some said it has 6 legs. Thus, we watched some photos downloaded from the web.
· “Wow!” said the kids. Dragons have moustache. They have nostrils but no nose like us. It has 4 legs. Thus, these are some of the standard features of a dragon since it was said tht nobody have ever seen a dragon or even found its bonesJ.

c) Continuation of our Dragon model.
· The kids recalled their chosen duties. We had finished the tail.
· Thus, we had 4 group tasks: the head, the body and the pearl ball. The earlier pearl ball had flattened as it was not properly taken care of. Thus, we decided making two whereby one as a backup.
· Some kids wanted to change their duties which I forbade. They could only help the other kids if they hahad finished theirs. This is to ensure that they take full responsibilty of their words and actions.
· Shi Jie, Xin Ru, Jin Shan were responsible at the dragon’s body. Some cut while some pasted. Yun Wen, Jin nan, Jia Yun, Jen Ning, Guan Yi, Jian Wei and Jing Kai were cautious with the ballons. They glued newspapers around them. They worked well. Yun Wen and Jen Ning worked well as they also made the dragon’s horns.
· Ze Yan, Yun Zhe and Song Chuan were serious at their work. They worked at the teeth and also beard. Justin, Eugene, Max, Zi Yang and Wen Yue needed encouragement to do their work. Later on, they got more serious and was more effective.
· We look forward to complete the model fast so that we can practise soon.

Enhancing Our Dragon Model

16/01/2009 (Friday)

a) Ze Yan’s drawing
* He stepped forward to draw a dragon picture. It was a big and nice one. Later, we added the beard, the moustache and also the scales.
* Then, I tested their vocabulary skill. They could differentiate the parts of a head, tail and also body.

b) Making our Dragon model.
* The kids went to their groups. Group A focused on the body namely the scales; Group B to do the spines, Group C to do the head such as horns, eyes, teeth and hair while Group D to do the tail.
* Group D was very co-operative. Jin Nan, Le Xin and Sharlene were co-operative. Group A was consistent with their scales making. Jin Shan, Xin Ru and Shi Jie were consistent. However, Group B had a challenge as they use cardboard to make the spines. They couldn’t last long and were too soft to stand nicely. Thus, the kids added starws to make them solid.
* Song Chuan and Shu Wei did the hair and decorated with colourful thin cloth. Ze Yan and Max did the teeth……quite creative. Eugene tried making the eyes but haven’t finished yet. Yun Wen and Jen Ning made the horns but had challenge to make them stand on the dragon’s head. Thus, they added straws to them.
* They were happy. Probably, we would take another 2 days to finish the Dragon Model.

Dissection of Dragon Model

15/01/2009 (Thursday)

a) Terminology of dragons

· I drew a huge dragon on the board. The kids guided me with some parts of the body.
· They argued if dragons had nose or even 4 legs.
· I replied that nobody had actually seen a dragon. Max agreed immediately saying that unlike dinosaurs, there are bones found to fix them. Thus, any similar looking dragon is acceptable.
· We placed the flashcards.

b) Dissecting the current Dragon model.
· It was very long. Altogether it was made of 5 dustbins and cloth.
· We discussed about ways to improve the outlook. They wanted more glitterings for the skin. They wanted different eyes rather than ping pong eyes. They suggested long beard and moustache too. They were excited!

c) The sponge.
· We wanted a more meaty dragon…haaaa! So, we added some sponge into its body.
· We had an unwanted giant crocodile model made of sponge.
· Thus, we recycled the sponge and tied them into small plastic bags. Once the dragon is completely decorated, we would add in those sponge into the dragon’s long body.
· For this activity, the kids sat in a group of three and worked together.

d) Segregation of duties.
· The kids chose their desirable task. We would begin the activities tomorrow.

An Invitation Letter

14/01/2009 (Wednesday)

a) An Invitation Letter
* As we knew that Teacher Hoo or rather Mr. Hoo, our prinicipal was once a Dragon Dance team player, we got excited to invite him as our trainer.
* The kids learnt that a player needs to be very disciplned! So, they thought of the qualities Mr. Hoo has.
* From there, we started constructing a letter to invite him. We brainstormed together.

b) A token of appreciation.
* It’s a custom that we must thank our visitors. WE listed a few presents for him. Wen Yue suggested that we draw. Jin nan suggested a dragon. Then, Ze Yan was ever so excited to show his brother’s dragon drawing. So beautiful indeed! Finally, we decided to make a scroll bar poster for Mr. Hoo.

c) Segregation of duties.
* The kids volunteered for writing: Song Chuan, Jen Ning, Sharlene and Xin Ru. The first three were indepenedent. It was quite a challenging task for Xin Ru to write 2 long sentences. She was so determined not to give up. Thus, I encouraged her with little guidance.
* The other kids preferred to draw pictures as decoration for the letter and the scroll bar poster. As they had just learn about dragon, most of them started sketching dragons. They were awesome! I was surprised with Jing Kai’s good dragon drawing!

d) Fire Crackers.
* After that, the kids continued with making our long fire crackers as class decoration.

Presentation

Friday (09/01/2009)

a) Analysing a real TV set

· Although the kids have television at home, they might not know the parts well.
· I brought in their hand-made TV set and the compared. They agreed with the class’s TV set……and kept saying..WOW!
· Max and Yun Zhe suggested that we have Panasonic as the brand.
· So, Max went to label the TV set.
· The other team players continued with making the cables.
· Next, Ze Yan said they prefer using poster colour to colour pencils for TV

decoration.
· So, we did leaves printing.
· They also analysed the TV catalogues which I brought into the class.

b) The touching-up of our movie.
· Some finished their colouring.
· Some did paper cutting such as flowers, butterflies, grass and frame.
· Some used sponge printing.

c) Let’s Present!
· Later, the kids came up individually trying to tell the story. Some were independent while some needed guidance. Most importantly, they had the ideas. The grammar part would be fixed up when I write down their story on a manila next week.
· Are they proud?.....Hmmm….at least they learnt that it’s not easy making a movie!

Continuation of TV Craft

Thursday (08/01/2009)

a) Making a TV set

· Song Chuan, Ze Yan, Jin Shan, Yun Zhe and Max got together to brainstormed on doing their TV set.
· I gave them a socket. Then they started discussing among themselves.
· Ze Yan decided to use colour paper and the boys chose for blue.
· Meanwhile, Yun Zhe was busy analyzing making the plugs. Finally, he marked 3 dots and asked me to cut with cutter. The others cut boxes make the remote controls……haaa……its so enjoyable!
· At one time, Yun Zhe went under the box to fit his plug. He looked exactly like a mechanic. Who….it fixed well J !

b) Checking the storyline
We rechecked everyone’s drawing if they matched with our stories. We suggested some ideas. Example: Justin should colour the background green as we agreed that The King and his family were having lunch in the garden. Jian Wei’s river could be improved. Jin Nan was helpful to teach Xin Ru how to draw a fish. Then, they started colouring.

c) BEN 10 and Pikachu
· Wen Yue, Eugene, Jing Kai and Zi Yang were given chances to construct their cartoon stories. However, they were quite obsessed that they didn’t produced the storyline. As we did our BEN 10 drama last year, I told the class that we should learn some new things.
· Thus, the class agreed to have BEN 10 and Pikachu only as advertisements.
· In fact, Zi Yang could really draw “Upgrade” well.

The Tale of 4 Dragons

13/01/2009 (Tuesday)

a) Reading

We read through our “TV Card” at the beginning. We discussed over the title. We named it “ The King Of China”. Ze Yan insisted it to be “The China of King” which was grammatical wrong. I explained to the class…..that we don’t call Yan Ze Cheah but rather Cheah Ze Yan. Of course, they would learn the detailed grammar in school.

b) Brainstorming Chinese New Year Activities
They brainstormed the activities that their parents did and are still doing in preparation for Chinese New Year.
Spring cleaning, baking cookies, buying new clothes, dragon dance and lion dance.
The kids voted for Dragon dance.

c) Story: The Tale of 4 Dragons
None of them heard of it.
It’s regarding the kind and brave Long, Yellow, Black and Pearl Dragon.
They sprayed the sea water to form rain despite the instructions of The King Of Heaven.
They were punished and then turned into the four famous river of China such as Hwang Ho River.
Dragon is the symbol of prosperity and we see them everywhere during Chinese New Year.

d) Video Clip
The kids watched video clips on Dragon Dance.
They said “Wow! Teacher…..it’s beautiful but not easy!”
Right…….if you want to be part of the Dragon Dance Team, you must be very disciplined!

e) Let’s try out!
Although the standard Lion Dance has 9 poles but our existing old hand-made Dragon Dance have only 5 poles.
It was very old and quite torn made 6 years ago by the 6-year-old class.
So, we tried them out while 1 person pretended to carry the Pearl Ball.
They were very excited and happy.
Then, we brainstormed on how to modify the Dragon Dance.

He told the King to be the peacemaker of a fight in the village. The King rode on his horse and hurried to the village. The fight started from a small problem. A man accidentally broke a beautiful glass belonged to a villager. Instead of forgiving, they started fighting. The King said they should be ashamed as fighting would not solve problems. People would die because of fight. Upon realisation, they asked the King for forgiveness.

a) Singing together!
The kids learnt to listen to instructions. They queued up in two lines. They remembered the opposite friend as their partner. As they sang the “HAPPY” song, they jumped forward and finally hi-fived! They loved this action song.
“ I am H.A.P.P.Y.
I am H.A.P.P.Y.
I am H.A.P.P.Y.
I am a happy person.”

Jin Nan enjoyed drawing as she could draw beautiful Princess and nice butterflies.

c) Discussion: Which theme?
· Their ideas were infinity….an on-going list! The kids came out with 3 main topics, namely; Chinese New Year, Chinese Drawing and also activities with friends. 2/3 chose “activities with friends.” They suggested “TV Card”……and majority agreed. I even got Eugene and Yun Zhe to explain the meaning of “TV card” as in their mind….haaaa……similar to my cheap little “tikam” toy during my childhood! Basically, they would learn to be produces, editors and also presenters….and maybe imaginary actors and actresses.
