See you soon, kids!

Dear kids,
It would take a while more before you could really read and understand a blog. However, if you are listening to it, it probably was read by your parent.
The toughest time for me is to part with all of you. The first day we met, there was like miles of distance between us. As an English teacher, I had to really try speaking English most of the time. Haa…..how distraught it was for the first 2 months. Fortunately, we started interacting more and laughed together. Balancing is very important to me. I’ve got to juggle between your academic achievement and attitude growth. To me, the attitude is important above all matters. Sometimes, you really test my patience, observation and intelligence. Strange but after all those tides, we got closer and happier. I’ve sacrificed lots of weekends for work preparation…..but it’s worth it! Sometimes, I got ideas immediately after my sleep. Best of all, when you get more enthusiastic, you started suggesting ideas. You even challenged my answers which I love it because you have grown more mature. Your logical skill has indeed improved and impressed me.
As we adjourned to year 6, we have more responsibilities. Yet, your laughter and stories always reminded me that everyone is here for a purpose. Some are good at reading, some at drawing, some at speaking, some at logical skill and etc. Your beauty and innocence reminded me that everyone can be taught….and if any kid causes problems, it is just because he or she needs a teacher’s love and guidance.
The day you came, you were scribbling your book with wrong posture. Today you graduated with good writing and reading skill. You also showed good examples to your younger friends. I am proud to have known and met you. There are no words to describe my feelings except “Thank You very much”. Thank you for being part of my life. Let’s remember; always love your family. Love yourself and live life to the fullest! A small step can make a difference to the world :)
Love,
Teacher Jenny.

Garbage Enzyme.

Friday (21/10/2011)

a) The Apples.
• The kids helped to peel apples and then we purposely left them to see what happens after that. Of course, after half an hour, the fresh apples changed a little brownish because being oxidised.

b) Garbage Enzyme.
• Drinking Enzyme is safe to drink because it is made from the fruit itself. It is a nutritious drink that provides supplement to drinkers. However, our objective was to make garbage enzyme. Ingredients: 3 cups of fruit skin, 10 cups of water, 1 cup of brown sugar. We made it together by putting them into the big bottle container. Then, we closed it and shook it. It would be kept for 3 months before can be used. Gas to be released every one month.
• I showed the kids’ school’s garbage enzyme. We use it to wash the floor, to wash plates and do other cleaning activities. We also use it as plant fertilizer. I let the kids smell some real drinking enzyme. Scientists made aresearch that when garbage enzyme is poured into rivers, they will help clean the polluted river.

c) Omelette.
• Our spring onion has grown for the last 3 weeks. Thus, we decided to cook it with eggs as omelette. We cracked 4 eggs, beat them and added some soya sauce. We washed our spring onions, cut them and added to the egg mixture. Then, we fried the mixture as omelette. We put some onto bread and the kids really enjoyed it!

b) Demonstration.
• I demonstrated to the kids the ways I stamped the vegetables. It can be made into trees, people, butterflies, insects, food, suns, houses and etc.
• The kids really had fun! They were rather creative.

c) The Posters.
• As this Thursday, we are having Food Sales; the kids have to make a Poster to advertise their activity to the school kids and parents. So, they came and helped me to stamp on the Posters.

b The Book Shop.
The kids went to the shop and saw many colourful books. They went there to pick books and read them. They were excited and we had to reduce their noise as it is a public library. The kids then adjourned to a corner which displayed a story of a family. It is a good story whereby it teaches us to differentiate good and bad. Then, we went to the café. Kids went to a corner whereby there was face and hand painting. Time to go home and the kids were very tired but……phew….what an experience.
c) Storybook: Hansel and Gretel.
* The kids requested me to read this story and so, I read the book to them. It is such an interesting story about how 2 kids were lost in the forest. They saw a house made of candies. They started eating pieces of the house. The witch welcomed them and eventually trapped them. However, when she wanted to cook the kids for her meal, Gretel pushed the witch into the fireplace and she died. They brought back some of her treasure to help their pooor parents. Although the kids enjoyed the story but disagreed that the kids should take or “steal” the treasure. They should just go home and help their parents.
d) Unforgettable Moments.
* Each kid came forward to say about their favourite part of their Logos Hope trip. They started the sentence with “I like Logos Hope because….” Or “I don’t like it because….”. The kids love it because of the storybooks, the performances, seeing their teachers’ participations at activities, handpainting, the window view, the high staircase and also the beautiful ship.

Let’s Buy and Sell

Wednesday 05/10/2011

a About Logos Hope.
As we are visiting Logos Hope ship tomorrow, I explained a little about the ship. It’s a Germany ship that travels around the world and it does voluntary work such as helping the poors, giving free dentistry treatment and also teaching free English lessons to villagers. Volunteers around the world board the ship to serve people. They have a section for Book fair and also a café for food and beverage. The kids were so excited and we talked about rules being there.

The kids learnt how to buy and sell. I gave them an example story. George was given RM10 buy his mum to assist her at buying some grocery staffs. He bought some broccoli, Chilli sauce, lollipop and mineral water. Together,. He used up RM8, thus the balance is RM2. However, the wind blew a ringgit away. Thus the final balance is RM1.

c Role Play: Trading.
The class was divided into 2 groups; the buyers and the sellers. They arranged 3 tables and decided what to sell. Table 1 sold food, table 2 sold toys while table 3 sold candies. They used their money note which they made a few days ago. Each of them has got their purses or wallets hung on their neck. Then, they exchanged roles and had lots of fun….

a) The Pomegranate.
 The carrots’ leaves in experiment have grown taller. Our Bean sprouts planted in the garden have grown taller. The onions’ shoot has also grown. Potatoes haven’t shown any signs.
 I brought in a Pomegranate fruit and the kids were anxious about it. It was plucked from our school tree. The fruit skin is already almost all yellow but it was difficult to break it open. So, I had to cut it by knife. It has got lots of small seeds. The kids wished to bring them home to plant. Shawn said if the fruit is riper, then it would be sweeter. Gee….the kids love sour fruit! 

b) Scrambled words!
 At first, we spelt “BROCCOLI” together. Then, I gave each kid a letter. The first group stated playing. A smurf farmer and McQueen chased the letters and they were scrambled up! Then, the smurf said, “Stop!” The letters tried arranging themselves but unsuccessful. It was about 2 times and the third time, Smurf called out the letters and eventually the spelling was correct! Hooray!

c) Money value.
 As we would be selling food next week, so we learnt about money value. I showed the kids notes of RM1, RM5, RM10 and RM50. Shawn showed me old note sof RM1 and RM2. We compared the features and colours. Features include KL Tower, JLCC Twin Towers, an aeroplane representing KLIA, a cargo ship representing Malaysia’s international trading and etc. Kids said the notes will be torn if cut by scissors. True enough but money is so important especially for the poor ones. Thus, we should appreciate money. We should our parents for working hard to give us money and love for us.
 Each kid was given 10 pieces of cardboard. They wrote values on them and coloured them accordingly. Blue for RM1 note, green for RM5 note and red for RM10 note.

Friday (30/09/2011)

a) The carrots.
• We observed our experiments. The white flowers have changed more into coloured flowers as the stems absorb the coloured water. The carrots in the blue water have turned into blue carrots and the carrots have started rotting; thus, we threw them away. The kids wondered what happened if the carrots were left there to rot. How would they look like? We’d be learning this soon.
• In another container, there were 2 carrot tops with sprouted leaves. They are still growing. Let’s see if they grow higher next week.

b) The Sales.
• The kids wanted to sell their recipes. Furthermore, we are learning about a restaurant; thus trading will give them a better idea. We brainstormed on things to make and sell. Those will also be included in our menu. With votes, the finalized food including burger, ice-cream and sandwiches. We shall be focusing on burgers and ice-cream dessert first.

First was the wok with its ingredients mixture while the second picture was the rice cooker with boiled pasta.

d) Introducing Blacklight.
• This year-end performance would be a blacklight theme. I showed the kids some video clips of the performance. The audience can’t see the performers but only the fluorescent clothing. Kids can still see the stage. They were excited!
• I discussed a little about the ideal wish for the performance. They decided to perform the story of a farmer and a seed. However, we are including some latest cartoon characters to make it more interesting. Well……we’ve got to work step by step! 

Menu 3: Vegeroni Tomato Pasta.

Thursday (29/09/2011)

a) Ingredients and segregations.
• I introduced onions and asked them to be careful at cutting as it causes us to have tears. I skinned off the carrots and showed proper ways to cut. I introduced tomato and its seeds. I opened the mushrooms and showed them proper ways to cut. Lastly, I showed them the vegeroni pasta which comes in shapes and healthy colours.
• Then, the kids chose the job parts they desired。

b) Cooking the Sauce.
 We placed all the ingredients together at the kitchen. I opened a can of tomato puree. The wok was washed and dried. Firs, we poured the oil. Next, we added carrots, tomatoes, mushrooms, puree. We stirred and added some water as it was too thick. I added some sugar as the puree mixture was too sour. The class tasted the mixture and agreed that the puree is now ready to be served.

c) Boiling the pasta.
 We placed some water in the cooker and poured some oil into i. 5 minutes later, we added the Vegeroni pasta and let it boil. The evaporated steam triggered our hungry stomach. Meanwhile, kids arranged the tables, chairs, bowls and spoons.

d) Let’s eat!
* Each kid was given some pasta. They added the sauce onto heir pasta. Hmm….yummy. Some had 2 bowls. A few though it was rather sour. So, next time; we should either add less puree or more sugar in the mixture. So…..the kids said item #3 for McQueen’s Magical Resaurant is Vegeroni Tomato Pasta with the price of RM9.50…….hmmm…is that the standard price in the market today?

Green Peas “Edamame”

• There are many types of beans and they give important protein for people especially vegetarians who don’t eat meat. Protein enables muscle building and body growth. Meat and eggs anre also good source of meat.
• Green Peas are young beans. If left for a few months, they will turn brown and become Soy Bean. Soy Beans are used to make bean curd and also making Soya Bean drinks. Soy Beans are very important source of protein food.

b) Boiling Green Peas “Edamame”.
• First, we watched them. Then, we add some water into the cooker. Next, we added some salt into the water. The kids smelt and tasted some salt beforehand. Then, we poured the peas in the water to boil. 10 minutes later, the kids took turns to scoop the green peas. After cooling down, we ate them…..Kids just love peas!

c) Story time: The Enormous Turnip
* A farmer planted some turnip seeds into the soil. The next morning, one of them grew enormously. The farmer was so happy, he tried pulling it but failed to. He asked help from his wife but failed again. The son came, then the daughter. Next, the dog, the cat and finally the mouse. And………pull……out came the turnip! They were so happy that the farmer shared the vegetable with all of them. The farmer’s wife cooked delicious turnip food for all.

Gardening

Tuesday (27/09/2011)

a) The Various Plants.
• Tzen Yu and I brought in some vegetables for the kids to observe. Potatoes with little yellowish and green eyes are ready to be planted. Similarly to gingers. Tzen Yu said that potatoes with those eyes are not safe to be eaten because it is poisonous. Cooks will have to cut discard that part away. We also observed onions. The kids passed around and smelt and compared.

b) Gardening.
 Before planting in the garden, we learnt the different tools namely; spade, rake, watering can, flower pots and soil.
 We sang a song that goes along to the tune “The Farmer In The Dell”. The kids helped me to form the lyrics. “The farmer in the dell, the farmer in the dell, heigh-ho-the-diery-oh, the farmer in the dell.”
“ The farmer digs the soil……..The farmer plants the seeds,…….The farmer waters the seeds, ………The sun shines the seeds”.
 We took turns to plant those vegetables. We planted onions, potatoes, ginger and we transferred some bean sprouts which have already started growing tall. The kids agreed to water those plants every morning.

c) Observing the flowers.
 The flower stems have absorbed the coloured water. Those white chrysanthemums have started changing colour to red, blue and also purple. They looked pretty especially the blue flowers.

d) Video Clip
 We watched how mushrooms grew. We watched the video clip of the song we learnt yesterday; “The Plant Song”.
 We watched an interesting story of Walt Disneys; “The Wise Little Hen”. The hen had some corn seeds and asked Peter Pig and Donald Duck to help at planting but they resisted, pretending to have a sudden stomachache. So, she planted them herself with cchicks’ help. Next, she needed someone to harvest. Again Peter Pig and Donald Duck rejected. So, she harvested herself. She then cooked lots of delicious food and invited them to eat, Peter Pig and Donald Duck immediately agreed. However, they were presented with a bottle of medicine. Both realized that they had misbehaved.

• First, we read through the lyrics ad discussed. Then we sang together. Next, we sang along with the music. They kind of like it!
For a plant to stay alive,
It needs 5 things, I would not lie,
It needs water so it can grow,
And it needs soil just like so.
Plants needs space, they can’t be tight,
The sun helps plants by giving light,
Don’t forget to give plants air,
Repeat the needs if you dare, Need 1 = WATER
Need 2 = SOIL
Need 3 = SPACE
Need 4 = LIGHT
Need 5 = AIR

The Vegetable Dishes.

Thursday (22/09/2011)

a) The first leaf.
 Hooray….! Our bean sprouts have gown leaves. The stems are also longer. Most of them have already grown leaves except a few.
 Then, we went to look at our wheatgrass seeds which were left to germinate in a storeroom. Hmm..so far, not much difference. Let’s hope, they grow more the next few days. The kids also were excited to look into the store room……of course it isn’t comfortable as the classroom.

b) The School Garden.
 We explored the garden to recognize the different plants. Currently, we only have Kangkung vegetables, Pomegranate tree, Pandan leaves, Sugracane Tree, Aloe Vera and Jack Fruit Tree. The others are flower plants.

c) The Vegetable Dishes.
 I bought a few vegetarian dishes to share with the kids. We had lettuce, lady fingers, spinach, bitter gourd and pumpkin. A few of them resisted at eating pumpkin but after persuasion, they ate and loved it and ate more. Only Shawn doesn’t like bitter gourd.

d) Discussion: Concert.
 I asked the kids’ opinion about our year-end concert performance. They said they wanted a story about farmer planting. He waited and waited for the plant to grow but it was a long time. Some wanted to add on animals in the story. Some wanted various vegetables. Some wanted a bad guy chopping the trees and fairies came to help. Well, I asked hem to think of the storyline before finalizing our decision.

e) Video Clip.
 Charlie and Lola “What Plant Is It?” It taught the kids proper ways to plant seeds. They shared on how seeds being pollinated. Some by wind, some by bees and some planted by people.
 “Sid The Seed” is a story about a seed who is afraid to grow out of its hole until its friends leave it behind. Bothe spider and butterfly left him as the y grow to see the world outside. The Seed was lonely and also decided to see the world. It drank lots of water and started growing out of the hole to gain sunlight. It grew so big that many animals came to stay on it. Its friends came by to reunite.

Our Vegetable Book.

Wednesday (21/09/2011)

a) Observing Little Bean Sprout.
 Our sprouts have grown very short stems but without any leaves. Thus, the kids were excited and said maybe the leaves would grow tomorrow. Well,….let’s see. We recapped the stages of A Seed’s Lifecycle.

b) Transferring the Wheatgrass Seeds.
 Today is the second day the seeds are left to drain. Today, we transferred them onto the soil and covered them with some wet newspapers. Then, we left them in the Store room as at this stage, they don’t require any sunlight.

c) Our Vegetable Book.
 To let the kids know about vegetables that we have learnt, I taught the kids to draw 3 tyes of vegetables. They drew broccoli, carrot and bean sprout. They labeled them. They also mustwrite their names on the little book.

d) Letter Writing
 When we did brainstorming on mind-mapping, the kids thought that Aunty would be the best chef to teach us about Spaghetti. Thus, we discussed about the letter content.
“Dear Aunty Jazz,
We love your food. Your spaghetti is delicious. Can you teach us to cook? We would be very happy! From: Pomegranate kids.”
* The kids chose the lines to write. The others decorated the letter.

Paddy Fields

Tuesday (20/09/2011)

a) Vegetables.
 I brought in some real vegetables for kidsto touch, feel and smell. They included “sawi”, cabbage, sprouts, lettuce. I also brought in grain of rice for kids to observe.
 We were surprised to see the leaf vegetables have got a few baby snails. They also have holes in them because eaten by pests.
 Our school vegetables are from an organic farm. Thus, they are not sprayed with pesticides which contain chemicals. Thus, before cooking vegetables, they must probably be washed to make them safe as food.

b) A Seed Life Cycle.
 We observed our little sprouts. We can see some roots. Wow….!
 Stage 1: A seed is planted in the soil. Stage 2: After receiving sunlight and water, it grows. The root reaches for the water. Stage 3: The green shoot starts to sprout. We call this the sprout. Stage 4: It grows taller and taller. Some bloom flowers and fruits. As for vegetables, the leaves grew larger.

c) Types of vegetables.
Teacher: Do all vegetables have seeds?
 Some vegetables are grown from seeds while some not. Some have got leaves while some not. We are not learning the types in detail as kids might get confused. However, we learn to recognize the various types of vegetables.

d) Paddy Field.
 Grains are uncooked while rice is he cooked food that we eat almost every day.
 Seeds are planted in nurseries for the paddy grains to grow. After a few months, they have grown into young shoots. They are transferred into the big paddy field. The paddy field has already being fertilized by oxen or machines beforehand. They will grow and grow until almost the height of an adult lady. Golden bunches of grains will be hung from the plant. Thus, harvesting season is ready. The grains will be sent to factories. We can buy brown rice which is ore nutritious or white rice.

The Food Pyramid

Monday (19/09/2011)

a) Nutrition
• In the past, many people especially children died due to insufficient nutrition. They had poor bone structures and lots of sickness. Thus, experts did researches anf came up with Food Pyramid.
• I drew a huge pyramid and kids guessed as much healthy food as possible.
• Then, I introduced the 6 group food. From bottom to top or from most important to least important. Namely: GRAIN foods such as rice, pasta, bread, biscuits, VEGETABLE FOODS such as broccoli, carrots, FRUIT foods such as lemons and apples, PROTEIN foods such as meat, beans and eggs, DIARY foods such as cheese, milk and yogurt and finally FAT foods such as lollipop, too much cakes, fries and cooking oil.

b) The Functions.
* We talked about the functions. Grains give carbohydrates to give us energy. Vegetables and fruits provide lots of vitamins. Eg: Vitamin A by carrots good for eyes, Vitamin B makes red blood cells,Vitamin C good for people who are feverish, Vitamin D good for bones, Vitamin E good for skin and Vitamin K important for body injury.
 Protein builds muscles. Vegetarians get lots of protein from beans such as tofu or beancurd. Diary products also give us necessary protein and calcium. Fats keep us warm and provides energy for us to move around. However, too much fat and lack of exercise cause health problems.

c) The Pyramid Game.
 Each kid picked a flash card randomly. Then, we read the words and categorized them into the appropriate category of food. Next, the kids ran to the pyramid section when I call out their names. Next, they grouped together as I called out their names.

d) Bean Sprouts and Wheatgrass.
 I made a mistake. The wheatgrass needed to be soaked overnight before drying them. Thus, I soaked them a day ago and today, we rinsed them to dry. On Wednesday only will we plant them in the soil.
 Meanwhile, we decided to plant bean sprouts as vegetables for our cooking activity. Kids soaked the cotton and place them in the egg shell. Then, they put some green beans in the egg shells.

Food and drinks

Thursday (15/09/2011)

a) The various.
• The kids brainstormed on the various of food and drinks they can think of.

b) Game: Hide and Seek.
• Picture cards of Food and Drinks were prepared earlier. We called out each name together. After 3 rounds, the kids named the pictures by themselves. The, we categorized them according to the title ”food” or “drinks”.
• Among: Orange juice, water, coffee, cheese, burger, cake, fruits, pizza, ice-cream and etc.
• The class was divided into 2 groups. The boys and the girls. First, the girls waited outside the classroom while the boys were excitedly hiding those flashcards. Then, the girls came in searching. Some boys were very funny; they got so excited that they pointed to the places where they hid the pictures……haaa Before the girls’ turn to hide, I reminded the kids not giving any clues to their friends. This time round, it got better!
c) Analysing wheatgrass seeds.
• Gee…..it’s strange, the seeds are the same as before. No sprouts. Well, the internet information said it will take 1 to 2 days to sprout a little. Well, we hope they will when we come back to school next week.
d) A Log Book.
• Each kid arranged 8 sheets of paper and put a Cover page right in front for me to staple. Then, they write their names. The new 5 year-old kids need some assistance
• The kids will bring home the log book for the weekend to cut and paste pictures of food and drinks for 2 pages only. If they don’t have, they can draw them. This exercise is to help them understand about the various food and drinks types and products. At the same time, parents will guide them to relate to their daily activities and surroundings.

Organic Wheatgrass Seeds

Wednesday (13/09/2011)

a) About Wheatgrass.
• The discovery started when a biological scientist cum farmer experimented with his dying hens. He gave them corns and wheatgrass as food. Not only, did they recover but they laid more eggs than normal hens. He shared the formula with many people and soon, many scientists started forming wheatgrass as tablets, powders and also juices for human health. The benefits including good blood circulation thus having a stronger heart, better digestion system, better skin and its chlorophyll provides lots of vitamins for a healthy body more than normal green vegetables. However, it gives similar nutrition as vegetables.
b) Video Clips.
• The clips taught us how to grow healthy wheatgrass. So, we observed and learnt.
• We also saw a clip whereby a little girl used a sock to make the wheatgrass toy head which is our little “Bobo” in the classroom. Only 3 kids said they have a sock to spare for making the activity. Thus, we decided using recycled egg shell instead.
c) Washing Egg Shells.
• The kids took a shell each and started washing to cast away the smell. Then, we soaked in a pail of water. A few hours later, I dried them as we would be decorating them soon.
d) Trimming Bobo’s hair.
• It was so fun because we imagined as a Barber. Then, we collected the cut wheatgrass to blend in a blender. We added water so that it is easier to blend. The kids smelt the juice; some loved it while some dislike. However, we didn’t drink because we aren’t sure whether the wheatgrass toy head which I bought from a Night Market is safe to be consumed or otherwise. Instead, I brought a small bottle of Honey Wheatgrass juice whereby the kids shared and drank. All kids want more as it’s really yummy! 
e) The Organic Wheatgrass Seeds.
• First, we washed the seeds three times to clear away the dust. Then, we left them in the small container to germinate for 1 to 2 daya. No sunlight is required. Hopefully, it works!
f) McQueen’s restaurant Menu.
• Thus, the first list on our menu is “Honey Wheatgrass Juice” and the kids decided the price to be RM3.00. Then, we discussed the other recipes that we are going to experiment including rice, vegetables, pasta, pizza, ice-cream and etc. Let’s see how it goes……

McQueen’s Restaurant Layout

Monday (12/09/2011)

a) Chlorophyll
Rei: Last week, you asked us why wheatgrass is green? My dad said because it contains chlorophyll.
 I explained the meaning of chlorophyll. It is the green pigment in plants and enables plants to absorb sunlight to make their food and gets energy. Thus, when they are harvested, we get the energy from the wheatgrass juice. I showed them the organic seeds given by Teacher Huang and they took a handful to smell. Some said they smelt nice and some otherwise. We would watched a video clip on it and learn to plant our very own wheatgrass.

b) The Restaurant Layout Plan.
 The kids got so excited. We brainstormed the various areas we can find in a restaurant. These are a few discussed. Shawn suggested 2 storeys. Thus, a kitchen with 2 Dining Halls. A long counter which also enables take-away. A storeroom. A stage with televisions. A few doors including Emergency Exits. A lift especially for elderlies and handicappers. Kids reminded me of handicappers’ washrooms. A class to teach cooking and gardening. An outdoor garden and also a parking space. The car wheels potray the decorations such as dishes of the day.

c) The Play.
* The kids were divided into a few groups. Some set up the dining tables, some decorated the cashier areas, some prepared the menu, some made the flowers, some cooked at the kitchen and etc.

a) Moon cake.
• Teacher Huang guided the kids at this activity.
• Ingredients: water, Oil, Sugar and flour dough. She has mixed those into a proper dough beforehand.
• She took a ball of dough, showed the kids how to make a pig cake.
• Beforehand, I have explained to kids; the various shapes that they wished to make. Their ideas were Angry Bird, Mc Queen car, dinosaurs, butterflies and tortoise.
• This activity is similar to playing with clay except that after making the shape, our school assistant, kakak; helped to spread egg gravy on each moon cake dough.
• Then, Teacher Huang baked them in the microwave. They looked beautiful and kids could bring home their baked moon cake at school dismissal.

b) Storybook Continuation.
• We sang the song “Oh, Chang Er…. Oh, Chang Er…” in English version.
• Then, we read the “Lantern Festival” short story of 10 sentences; together and loudly.
• The kids started enjoying the song. We continued with the colouring. Kids then cut them out. The cutting process was a challenging part for some kids. Then, they arranged the pictures in sequence and I stapled for them. We should be able to decorate the storybook by tomorrow.

A Handmade Storybook

Wednesday ( 07/09/2011)

a) Discussion: McQueen Magical Restaurant
• Some kids kept asking if we could learn about cars or Angry Bird as yesterday majority decided to learn about Food and Plants. I explained the importance of “vote” power. However, we brainstormed together about our new theme.
Teacher: Where can you get food? Rei: Food shops.
Teacher: Where can you get presents? Hiro:KFC
Tzen Yu: Mc Donalds.
• Thus, the kids agreed fully to set up a food restaurant so that they can even learn to buy and sell. It is similar to McDonalds except that we are focusing more on healthier and friendlier style of restaurant. After brainstorming many names, majority won with the new thematic name, “McQueen Magical Restaurant”.

b) The Lantern Festival Song.
• At first, we listened to the Chinese version of “Yue Liang Yuan”. Then, we translated into Chinese version. There was lots of laughter of course….haaaaaa!
“Oh, Chang Er, Oh Chang Er…….
Please fly down from the Moon, We are having a Mooncake party, please come and join us!
Oh, Hou Yi, Oh Hou Yi……
Do you miss Chang Er? We are having a Mooncake party, please come and join us!
Long Time ago, there was a hero; his name was Hou Yi.
He shot down 9 hot suns and save the Earth. Jade Emperor gave him 2 magical pills,
A thief tried stealing it, Chang Er swallowed them and started flying to the Moon!
Back to Chorus.

c) A Handmade Storybook.
• The kids started colouring pictures and to give them pretty side frames. Tomorrow, we shall cut and assemble them.

The Lantern Festival

Tuesday (06/09/2011)

a) The Lantern
Teacher: Why do you make lanterns?
Ying Qiao: It’s Lantern Festival.
Teacher: Why do you eat mooncakes?
Tzen Yu: Without Chang Er, there won’t be mooncakes.
Teacher: Who is Chang Er?
Rei: Chang Er is the Moon Godess. She swallowed some medicine and flew to the moon.

b) The Legend of Chang Er.
• Once upon a time, there were 9 suns in the sky. People suffered! Hou Yi; a good archer negotiated with the suns. They didn’t want to leave the sky. Thus, Hou Yi shot down the 9 suns. It was Chang Er who suggested not to shoot down the 10th. Sun. People need a sun for many good things. Chang Er and Hou Yi married. Jade Emperor awarded Hou Yi with 2 elixir pills. They kept it ear the ceiling safely. News spread and a bad guy came to steal the pills. To avoid that, Chang Er swallowed them and started flying out of the window and then to the moon. Hou Yi couldn’t chased her. Chang Er reached the Moon and vomited some pill out which legend said it turned into a Jade rabbit. Until today, the rabbit pounced making elixir pill but failed. Thus, Chang Er remained on the Moon. Hou Yi asked Jade Emperor’s permission to meet Chang Er but he became the Sun God. People believe that they only meet up on this day of “Lantern festival”.

c) Video Clip.
• We watched examples of Chang Er’s legend. We also watched The Lantern Festival in China which come in different shapes.
• The kids discussed on what activity to do.
Shawn: Can we colour pictures of Chang Er and Hou Yi?
• As the kids are doing lanterns in the morning, we shall be baking “Pig Mooncake” and a short storybook.

Friendship.

Monday (05/09/2011)

a) Friendship.
• We learnt the definition of “friendship”.
• A friend always helps us when we need assistance. A friend always encourages us. A friend forgives us and guides us doing the right things. A friend plays with us and shares with us.
• This is to welcome new friends from 5 year-old Red Bean class joining Pomegranate

b) Song: New Friends Found.
• A song getting to know one another better as well as dancing around having fun!
• The kids paired up as a boy and a girl. They sang and dance to the song. They watched my demonstration.
“We walk to the left, And we walk to the right,
And we walk, and we walk, And we walk alright,
With a heel and a toe, And a half turn around,
With a heel and a toe, And a new friend found!”

c) Guess who am I?
• The kids closed their eyes while I chose a kid to stand behind a very thin cloth. They guessed from the shadow. Well, some were so excited that they peeped at the process. They were so good at guessing who stood behind the cloth…..:) now, they know their friends’ name and features better.

d) Let’s clean together!
• The class is rather messy with pencils and books unorganized. Thus, we did job segregation. Some in-charged of the stationery, some wiped the walls, some wiped the door, some arranged the storybooks and some assisted me to clear the materials and posters of previous theme; “Let’s Play, Let’s Exercise!”
• Before going home, I asked the kids to think about new topics that they would like to learn for their new theme.

The Rocket Launch!

Thursday (25/08/2011)

a) The Insect Hunt
• This week is all about fun and play! Today, we visited Taman Rakyat in the morning. Reaching there, the kids were excited hunting for insects. They walked, ran and even climbed the hills. They brought various containers and also 2 nets. They found red ants, camouflaged spider, a red beetle, yellow beetles, butterflies, a cricket and a grasshopper landed on my t-shirt thinking that I’m a tree. The kids quickly caught it from my green t-shirt! Then, we adjourned to the huge that also has got foot reflexology path for us to walk and massage our feet. The kids walked on the path and “ouch…ouch…ouch”! but they still enjoyed it….:)

b) The Rocket Launch!
• Since 2 weeks ago, the kids and I had been busy making the bottled rockets. It really trained our motor skills. Some wings were umneven while some tops were quite slanting. I had to ensure that the rockets were at their best balancing level before launching.
• 20, 19, 18……..3, 2, 1 lifttop! Wow! It didn’t fly to the space but it flew high up towards the sky the highest probably being 2 storeys height. Some shot beautifully and vertically, some being nasty flying up and winding here and there……generally; all flew and the kids were amazed! So, was I….
• This is actually water rocket. We recycled a water bottle and then added 4 wings to add on balance. A cone top must be added so that it gives the momentum to shoot to the sky. First, we inserted some water. Then, the bottle mouth was locked to a small pump shooter. The kids and I pumped gas into the bottle for about 20 times. We could listened and see the bubbles from the water. The bottom part also bloated showing increased of pressure. Then, the kids released the bottle by pressing a handle and ….lifttop! The pump shooter was bought from an exhibition by the school a few years ago. This activity was actually requested by Weei Xiang when we first leant about “Sports and Games”. Xiang Wei said, “Real rockets have got big blast of fire” as what we watched from video clips last week.

c) The Angry Bird Mini Rehearsal.
• From the day we learnt dancing, the kids were already getting my permission to perform….but to whom is a question. Finally, the opportunity comes. We’re having a “Friendship Party” tomorrow and we have 1 hour. So, we decided to perform. The kids created their own dance patterns while we thought of the story together. I proposed this story as everyone is talking about “Angry Bird” everyday and everyone can dance the style they like. They chose to have Ribbon and Fan Dance, Ballet, Latin Dance and finally Hula Hoop Dance. Qian Joe volunteered as the “Angry Bird” who eventually changed as “Happy Bird”! ….:)
d) Video Clip: Our Body.
• We continued on this topic. We learnt about body parts, the skin and its importance. There is a skeleton that protects the organs within. The muscle moves the bones which enables us to work and move.
Kwong Yong: Why can the heart beat?
Yun Xin: Because it pumps blood.
• The heart is an important machine that pumps blood to all parts of body. Oxygen, Healthy food, exercise, enough sleep are among a few factors that contribute to a healthy heart and body.
• The brain is the boss of our body that tells us what to do. The red blood cells carries Oxygen while the white blood cells kills the bacteria. Our body is magical. Everyone can choose to have a healthy body.

e) Healthy Board Game.
• I drew a huge “S” and divided into boxes and wrote from 1 until 30. For a few boxes, the kids brainstormed on factors that make us healthy and otherwise. The positive factors can move forward a few steps. Example: 3 + 2 = 5. The negative factors will move backwards. Example: 25 – 2 = 23. We will learn more about it tomorrow.

Welcome to our Funfair!

Monday (22/08/2011)

a) Preparation.
 The kids go into their group. Altogether, there are 5 groups in-charged of 4 different games and he food.Game 1: The Maze, Game 2: Hello Taxi!, Game 3: Musical Candy and game 4: Hopscotch Pyramid.
 Wee Hong, Soon Yu and Tzen Yu were in-charged of food and beverage. Wee Hong made some orange cordial drink while Soon Yu arranged the cups. Tzen Yu arranged the chocolate wafer.
 “The Maze” arranged tables and covered it with black cloth as well adding on some toy insects under the table. “Hello Taxi” placed the toy car at its position. “Musical Candy” prepared a table with 2 plates to place the candies on the plates. “Hopscotch Pyramid” had the kids prepared 2 baskets; each containing 6 cups.

b) Welcome!
 The 6 year-old kids were the first batch of players. Before starting, each group had got its representative to explain and another teammate to do he demonstration. They were quite independent. They have to get 4 stamps on their card in order to exchange for presents ie, orange juice and chocolate wafer. Everything went well except some kids got the same chops for playing the same game twice. Some were afraid to crawl through the tables; thus encouragement was needed.
 Then, 5 year-old kids came by half an hour later. They were also happy. By this time, Pomegranate kids already know that they are not supposed to give 2 same stamps on the same card.

c) Enjoyment!
* Pomegranate kids got my permission to play each counter game. They were so excited and of course, they also drank some orange juice and ate the chocolate wafer. But they had to clear their games and toys before food and beverage. They even decided to invite 4 years old to our funfair.

The Funfair Brainstorming

Tuesday (16/08/2011)

a) Discussion: funfair.
• The kids talked about their experience. Some mentioned about Genting highland while some shared about Giant funfair. Some remembered about the ABC Daycare Centre that organized Indoor Carnival Funfair. This would be our objective before completing our thematic lessons “Let’s Play, Let’s Exercise”!
• We watched a few video clips on Funfair to give kids ideas to stay unity, to stay focused and to organize the fair well.

b) The Games.
• The kids got excited to shared the ideas. They got so happy to talk about the games to have it. Finally, we decided 4 games.
• (1) Hopscotch and building a Pyramid Tower.
• (2) Biting a candy on the mouth from a plate and to walk on the crooked line while listening to music.
• (3) Box maze and shooting in a ball.
• (4) The taxi.

c) The Trial.
• It’s very important for kids to understand about the games before introducing to players. We tested the game first. We tried (1) and (2) only due to time constraint. The kids decided that building pyramid must only be with one hand. As for game (2), the kids decided that we can stopped the music three times.

Rocket Theory

Monday (15/08/2011)

a) Theory Of Rocket
• Rocket theory was first found by the Chinese when they discovered black powder which they then made small little rockets for war purpose.
• Next, the Indians and also Europeans improvised them and thus, we have huge rockets to fly to the space.
• Rocket engine can also be found in Rocket car (already banned due to danger), Rocket Bike, Rocket jet and finally Rocket Missile which can kill millions by just a drop to any place on Earth!

b) Video Clips.
• We watched how Apollo 13 lift topped and also other rockets launch. There was a Countdown. The fire was so powerful and strong that thick smoke was produced. Kids said that it’s unsafe for anyone to be near the launching area.
• I showed the kids the inner part of a rocket. It has got “feul” and Oxygen compartment which would then channel to a combustion area. A rocket has got a few stages. As it reaches a certain height, it’s first part would be discharged as that area’s combustion has completed. Now, the discharge gives it more power to fly further up and change its direction. The second and third stage discharge will continue until when it finally reaches the Space. In Space, the astronauts in the rocket will usually be connected to their Mother Spaceship. Astronauts would usually do experiment and research in the space.

c) Dot to dot Rocket.
• We revised through numbers from 1 until 25. Kids were very independent. Then, they wrote their names and coloured the rocket! Their colouring has indeed improved!

d) Space Jam
• It’s a movie of human and cartoon mixture. It showed Michael Jordan’s dream as a young boy. Then, he grew up and became a Basketball Superstar. He decided to retire as it was very tiring after playing for so many years. He tried Baseball but he wasn’t very good. Meanwhile, in the Space Alien Funland; the monsters were very angry because their business was down and they needed new attraction. Thus, they decided to get Looney Tunes Cartoon to work for them. Loonet Tunes were hunted by the ferocious monsters. Looney Tunes hunted for Michael Jordan to help them. There was a bet. If Looney Tunes win in a basketball Match against the monsters, then they need not work at the Aliend Funland. Only Michael Jordan can help them…….will he? To be continued.

The Rocket Balloons.

Friday (12/08/2011)

a) Vocabulary Recap.
 We recapped on words learnt example players, basketball, score, team, cheerleader, dance and etc.

b) Flying Equipments.
Teacher: What are the things that can fly?
Class: Birds, helicopter, aeroplane, rockets balloons and etc.
Teacher: Why can an aeroplane fly?
Qian Joe: Because it has wings.
Weei Xiang: Because it has feathers.
Tzen Yu: Because it has engines.
 Planes and other vehicles could fly due to the engines. They fly well because of wings that help at balancing. Birds can fly also due to their vacuumed bones which are light.

c) Air and Balloons.
Teacher: Why can some balloons fly?
Qian Joe: It has a string tie to it.
Tzen Yu: It uses Helium gas which is light.
* Different gas has different weight. The bicycle gas pump as well as our CO2 gas blown out is heavy thus, the balloons can’t fly.
* A few kids came up in front to blow some balloons and they can’t fly.
* Wee Hong mentioned that he has seen some advertisement balloon promoting the banks.

d) The Rocket Balloons.
* Each kid was given a long balloon and then they pumped it using the air pump. It wasn’t easy and so, I had to help them too. Then, they raised their hand up in the air and released the long balloon. It flew really quickly and it was so fun!! It looked as if they are real rockets!
* Hopefully, through this activity; the kids will be motivated to bring 2 empty 1.5litres bottles for our Bottle Rocket Outing next week.

Collage Continuation

Thursday (11/08/2011)

a) Ribbons, threads etc.
 We continued with our shape collage. I showed the kids how to use other materials to make the shape collage. They used ribbons, thread while some also used colour paper to create their picture.

b) Collage continuation.
 The kids continued with their art craft. Some added new pictures using pencil. Thus, it is easier for them to add the collage materials. It took hard work to complete as it needs lots of patience.

c) The Dance.
* Instead of watching Michael Jordan “Space Jam” cartoon, kids requested to dance. 3 groups altogether. Boys with Hula Hoop Dance, Cheerleaders, Ribbon Dance and Latin Dance. They really love dancing but how can I involve this into our current thematic lesson? Then, the kids reminded me of the Happy Bird story. So, we might create a dance story of a Happy Bird.

Shape Collage

• We talked about shapes that we see and play everyday. Circle, square, rectangle, star, heart, oval and etc.
• I drew a circle and we thought of as many things which are similar to circle. Donuts, face, body, eye, football, racquet etc.
• A rectangle could represent a basketball net hoop or a stadium or a house.

c) Shape Collage.
• I introduced sharpening colour pencils. Then we took the output and made into circle shapes. It wasn’t easy as some sharpeners were not of good quality neither some pencils are not of better quality too.
• Thus, I showed them the proper way to sharpen. I guided more of the 5-year old kids.
• Some kids formed a ball, some as kids’ face playing at the playground, some as the sun, some preferred to break the output into squares. As glue didn’t help that much, we used double sided tape. Tomorrow the kids will use different materials such as thread or ribbon for other shape collage. This art craft needs tedious work, patience and good motor skill.

d) Bottled Rockets.
 It was Weei Xiang’s idea who mentioned that we would like to make Bottled Rockets. The other kids immediately agreed. This was due to the 6-year old class’s influence as they were learning about space.
 For this activity, each kid has to bring 2 empty bottles of 1.5 litres . At the moment, I have to guide the kids individually for the making as the pasting and cutting is rather tedious. I also get a few 6-year olds to be my assistants. We would only launch those bottled rockets onced everyone has brought and made. However, the latest date might be in 2 weeks’ time.

Olympics Games.

09/08/2011 (Tuesday)

a) The Various Games
 Kids agreed that sports players have to work hard to achieve their dreams. It isn’t easy for Usain Bolt, Michael Jordan, Datuk Lee Chong Wei or Nurul Zulkifli.

d) Basketball Game
 The kids played in their teams, “Yellow and Green Bird” teams. Meanwhile, the other kids practised their cheerleading dance. Xing Tong, Yun Xin and Zhe Qing assisted at training the other dancers.
 The kids were better at Basketball. They realized that they sometimes have to pass the ball to their teammates as the score is for the team. They can’t play foul neither complain in the middle of the game.

e) Cheerleading dance.
 It was danced to the “Rio” music. They were quite good and the boys clapped and smile at their their performance.

b) The Numbering.
 Some sports players have got numbers on their T-shirt to represent their nmames, types of sports, the team and country they belong to.
 Michael Jordan wear number 23 and has his team name “BULLS”.
 Thus, the kids decide a number for hemselves. Example: Zhe Qing chose number 6 Alisa number 41 and etc.
 As we don’t have sports t-shirts, thus; we decided to draw a number label. The kids drew themselves either as a Cheerleader or Basketball player. On the label, it has details of number, name of team (Happy Bird or Angry Bird”, their choice of Sports and also the name of our country, Malaysia.
 We shall laminate this and pin it to our t-shirt the nest time we play.

c) Basketball game.
 The kids were looking forward to the game. His time, they decided to call themselves “Green Bird” and “Yellow Bird”. Chia Yen is the only girl who is courageous to play Basketball…..go. go, go Chia Yen!

Michael loved Basketball. He would slam as many points as possible before sleeping every night. When he was not selected for his High School basketball team, he tried again! He didn’t give up! The following year he was chosen. He worked very well with his team. In a few championships, Michael injured himself but he was so determined to win and his team won again. His T-Shirt is number 23. Today, he is a successful businessman who does frequent welfare work such as setting up Scholarship Funds.

b) Basketball Game.
 The kids were grouped into 4 teams. Each time, first 2 groups would play while the others chose pom pom props to cheer the teams. After 10 minutes, we swapped groups.
 The kids learnt through play. Usually the tallest person is in the middle. They will try their best to catch the ball. Then, the opponent will try snatching the ball.
 Rules:
- No hitting hands.
- No snatching.
- No arguing at play.
- No running with ball. Must always dribble (bounce and move).
- No blocking the hoop.
- Every foul will follow by a free throw for the other team.

c) Video Clips.

 The paper has got a brief introduction about the cartoon movie; “Rio”.

Handicapped Athletes

Monday (01/08/2011)

a) Handicapped Athletes.
 Why are some people handicapped?
 The kids started by talking about strangers. Then, I led them to cases which occurred especially in India. Kids were kidnapped and then they were abused and then brought to places as beggars. They would begged for money. Thus, these kids are handicapped.

 Then, the girls held a huge curtain cloth sideways. The boys queued to race under the parachute cloth when the girls lifted. It tests the “unity”. If they don’ lift together, then it will be difficult for the racer to run under the curtain. When lifting, the kids cannot pull down the curtain. It has to fall back automatically by itself.
 Then, the kids exchanged their placed with girls running this time.

d) Race
 First, I introduced Baton Race. They were divided into 2 teams namely “Disney Kids” and “Happy Bird”.The Disney kids were more united although the racers ran faster in Happy Bird team. They had fun although tired. They requested to race again.
 Next, individual race. The kids were divided into 2 teams. They ran from 1 end to the other at the playground. It tested the kids listening skill as well as physical strength.

e) Continuation: RIO
* We continued the cartoon movie.. Linda agreed to help the scientist. So Blu was taken to Rio so that he could be mated for the next generation. Blu seemed to be the last bird iof its species. However, Blu’s mate didn’t like the idea. They escaped. Linda woke up feeling so sad thinking that they had been kidnapped. At the same time, that night; there was a break in to the scientist’s lab to steal the endangered animals…….Tobe continued.

Bubble Painting

Friday (22/07/2011)

a) Theory: Bubbles
Q: Will coloured bubbles such as pink bubbles be pink once blown?
Q: When we use different shaped wand such as star shape, will bubbles blown be star too?
• Water has got a thin surface tension. That explains why little bugs like Daddy Long Leg could stand on water surface.
• Bubbles = Water + Detergent. (+ glycerin……added in sold products)
• Detergent strengthens water surface tension. When blown, it bursts after a while.
• Bubbles are colourless but we can see the rainbow reflection on them. Even coloured bubbles will be colourless when blown.
• I brought out some wires and showed the kids a few shapes that I could bend out of the wand. Weei Xiang also tried bending one. I didn’t make it an activity for kids to bend as the sharp point would be dangerous. Result: Bubbles blown are still circle!

b) Bubble Painting
• Paint + Detergent + Water = Bubble Solution.
• The paint needs to be mixed well with the detergent before mixing with water. Each kid was given a straw to blow the solution to the maximum. Then, kids quickly place the white paper over the bubbles to gain the burst patterns. We made 2 colours; black and pink. The kids took turn. They were taught to blow before the real painting. Most of the kids were independent.

c) Cartoon Movie: Rio
• Zhi Feng shared this film with us. Everyone has been talking about the iPad’s Angry Bird. And the kids love the Rio song as their dance background. Thus, we decided to watch Rio hoping that the kids will realize that birds can be happy too!  We watched only for a while….to be continued
.

Paper Fan

Thursday (21/07/2011)

a) Discussion
 2 – 3 kids suggested that we have dance competition. To encourage the kids explore their skills, we arranged the 4 tables into a runway. Kids who are interested got up to do their dance. Some used pom pom strings, ribbons, paper fans and some preferred to dance using just body movements. However, after voting, the class decided not to do dance competition. They preferred to do “Hula Hoop” dance, ribbon, fan, ballet and Latin dance. Hmm…..but how can we combine these into an activity? Recently, everyone’s talking about Angry Bird……everywhere! Ahh…we decided to tell a story about how the Angry Bird transformed into a Happy Bird using these dances. Zhi Feng lent me a cartoon CD of “Rio” which the kids were excited to watch. We shall watch tomorrow.

b) Craft: Paper Fans
 Tools: Colour Papers.
 The kids listened to my instructions. Firstly the kids had to draw pictures onto the paper. It could be flowers, happy birds and any of their favourite pictures. Secondly, fold the rectangle into half and half and so on to get the greased line. Unfold it and fold it inside out until finished. Then, fold into half. Paste them together so that it won’t fall off. Next, each kid took a thread as to decorate the fan, so that it has got a tail.
 Each kid folded 2 fans. Then, they practiced dancing with the fans.

c) The Fan Dance.
 We made 3 lines and the kids tried dancing to the video clip that we watched yesterday.
 The objective is to see if the kids were interested at this dance. Girls were more interested.

 Vocabulary: morning, afternoon, evening, a.m., p.m., English, Mandarin, Sukukata, teabreak, nap, sleep, wake up.

b) Reading Time
 As we talked about the time table, we used time to express. Among:

 Then, the kids did a worksheet to reinforce their lessons.

c) Hula Dance.
* The kids requested to dance with hula hoops. Thus, I checked if they could remember the dance steps. We went through for a while. Then, the boys lined up and took positions to do the dance. They were better at spinning the hoops.

d) Bubble Making.
* As our bubble solution has finished, the kids tried thinking of ideas at making some. Zheng Yuan suggested that we mix some detergent with water and shake. Hus, I went into the kitchen to get some detergent. We poured it into a container, added on some water and shook it. The kids were so excited when we managed to blow the bubbles successfully. Thus, each kid queue to get some solution for their small bottles. They blew and blew. They had fun!

Kids Gymnastics.

Tuesday (19/07/2011)

a) Gymnastics
 We are currently learning about different types of dance. We brainstormed the various dance. Among: Fan dance, Pom Pom dance or Cheerleading, Ribbon dance, Ballet, Latin, Hula dance , Water dance and a few more.
 Jia Xun brought a book on Gymnastics to share. It mentions that the Russians and Chinese had practiced gymastics a very long time ago. Gymnasts include males and females. There are many types. Rhythmic gymnasts who use ribbons, balls, hula hoops and other tools. There are other types that use no tools.

b) Kids Gymnastics.
 The kids got so excited that they shared that they too know a few styles. Thus, we warmed-up first. We went to the playground to breathe in some fresh air and the kids took turns guiding friends to do warm-ups.
 Then we went back to the classroom to show some styles as the playground floor might be dangerous for the kids.
 Zhe Qing lied down facing the floor. She bent her knees and used her toes to touch her head. Of course, she lifted her upperback. She looked like a boat. We imitated her. Some kids could do it while some could not.
 Then Qian Joe showed how he could do the downward dog style. Zheng yuan made it advance by lifting his other leg high to the ceiling.
 Weei Xiang did the bridge post. Yee Xuan didthe Tree post.
 Wee Hong did the dancing post. I taught them the Lion and fish post.

c) Video Clips
 We watched a few clips including the Chinese Fan Dance, Chinese Ribbon Dance, little kids doing Pom Pom dance, teenagers doing Cheerleading Gymnastics. We also watched the video clip of Rio Music. The kids requested because we had danced to its music.

d) The Reward
*Since everyone was a Hula Hoop winner for yesterday, we decided to have Honey Stars with milk. However, substituted mil with Milo. Honey stars are cereals that provide nutrition. Milo too has Calcium that is healthy for our bones.
e) Bubble Time!
 The kids were so excited hat each was given an empty bottle which I poured in detergent into it. They blew happily and it looked like we are in a Bubble Land!

Triangle tag

Monday (18/07/2011)

a) More gifts
 Some kids drew pictures at home to give to Girlny and Boyny. They included Chun Kit and Zhe Qing. They said they informed their parents about the sad news.

b) Game: Triangle Tag
 3 kids formed a triangle. A kids stands outside of the triangle formation. One of the triangle kids is the prey. The outside person is the predator. We decided that the predator as The Giant Snake while the prey as “Girlny” or Boyny. Each group was given a minute. The predator has to tag the prey. If he or she is touched, then the kids swap positions to restart the game. At first, the kids were not united. After a few rounds, they discovered that unity is the only way to protect the prey from being tagged by the predator.

c) Discussion: Hula Contest.
 From Hula Hoop, the kids decided to venture into dance. Before venturing further, I asked the kids ideas for Hula contest. Finally, Rei suggested that the person who spun the longest would be the winner. The class agreed. They asked me if they could choose to spin the hoop using their hands and necks besides waist. I allowed provided they are very careful Yet, I reminded them that spinning using waist is the easiest.

d) The Clock Part
 Before starting the contest, I introduced the clock parts to them. The short needle shows hours, the longer needle shows minutes while the longest shows the seconds. We counted how many seconds there are in a minute. There are 60 seconds in a minute.
 Zheng Yuan spinned for 33 seconds, Kwong Yong spinned for 14 seconds while Qian Joe spinned for 9 seconds. These were the top 3 players. The others are still winners because it isn’t an easy task for kids to spin even for adults. Even spinning for a second is still a winner.
 We discussed on the reward and decided instead of trophy and medal, we are having honey stars with milk or milo as healthy snack for the kids’ determined effort.

Farewell, Boyny

Friday (15/07/2011)

a) Gone too soon!
 3 days ago, Chun kit informed that his parents would like to adopt “Boyny” our freshwater turtle to his temple’s pond, Boyny passed away on Friday morning. I was busy on Thursday at bringing the other 2 classes for outing at KLCC Petroscience. When I got back, Boyny was under the bigger stone. I quickly removed it and Boyny was still swimming. I thought it was okay because the turtles like hiding under those stones. I fed it but was so disappointed at losing it this morning.

b) Acceptance
 It was quite difficult for everyone to know about this news. Girlny died last Sunday and today, its Boyny’s turn.
Alisa: The husband misses the wife. So, he left us too!
 Kids asked “Why”? I wished I knew……I wished I would had passed Boyny to Chun Kit’s temple on Wednesday itself rather than planning to make “Thank You” present before handing over to the temple. We learnt to accept its death. The kids assisted at burying Boyny next to Girlny. We discussed the reasons of its death. It could be
i) the heavy stone ii) Girlny passed its bacteria to Boyny. iii)the midnight thunderstorm.

c) Memory.
 Some kids suggested that we make a book compilation of drawings for both Boyny and Girlny. Zhe Qing suggested that we make cairns for them. Yun Xin said we should give them some flowers.
 When the kids have finished drawing small pictures, they took their LogBook out to draw a huge picture of Boyny and Girlny as memory. The kids missed playing with them such as having the turtles at racing

Hula Hoops and Ribbons

Wednesday (13/07/2011)

a) Girlny’s skeleton.
Chun Kit: Teacher, can we dig and see if the freshwater turtle has become skeleton?
Teacher: Living things flesh take time to deteriorate. It might take a few years. Since Girlny is small, it probably takes a shorter period.

b) Hula Hoop new step dance.
 We discussed on new styles which we watched from the video clip yesterday. The kids volunteered to show the styles. There was spinning 2 hoops by Jun Yu, spinning on neck by Rei, spinning on hands by Chun Kit and a few more.

c) Let’s dance Hula!
 We synchronized the steps without music. First, the kids stood in the hoop far from one another. Then, they turned the hula on the floor while clapping. Next, swayed the hula from left to right. Next, driving it. Then, hopped into it to spin. Next, hop over to friends’ hoops. Finally, individual practice while the rest standing behind moving their hoops.

d) The Ribbon Dance.
 As we didn’t have enough hulas, we had a small discussion. The girls agreed to do ribbon dance. So I taught them a few basic steps. These included:
- spinning in small circles, spinning vertically, spinning horizontally, flipping sideways and finally forming flowers.
 Finally, with some music background, we did the dance at the school hall. We used “Rio” music and also “We are the champion” by Crazy Frog.

e) Discussions.
 What’s the purpose of the dance. Just for fun or for other objectives. The kids were thinking when someone suddenly said, let’s perform. But on what occasion?
 Wee Hong suggested a mini sports event at thematic brainstorming session last month. Some kids preferred funfair. Thus, we might organize one of these and then do the dance performance.

Life and Death.

Monday (11/07/2011)

a) Farewell, Girlny!
 This morning, as I was changing the freshwater turtles’ water, Girlny did not move. In fact, its head was a little bit swollen. She’s gone. It was so sad. I told the news to the class. We decided to bury her in the school compound and we agreed it to be near the sugarcane area. I dug the ground, the kids too turn to see Girlny for the last time. We sang a song for her, “I love you”. Rei shared her sad feelings. Kwong Yong suggested that we draw pictures for her similar to a cairn at a graveyard. Now, Boyny is alone. We decided not to free it at Chun Kit’s temple pond. He did mentioned a few months ago that we could release the turtles to the temple pond. I just need assurance from his parents.

b) Death
 Kids asked why did Girlny die. Probably because it was sick. Although we have changed a bigger aquarium for them; yet a natural pond would be best for our little pets. We were worried to free them to the ponds due to they might not be able to protect themselves from predators. Now, we have to find a safe home for Boyny.
 Living things will die including people. Why do people die? Kids brainstormed. Amongst:
1) eat unhealthy food 2) smoking and beer 3) sick 4) accidents
5) bad daily habits such as no vegetables, no vitamins, insufficient sleep, insufficient exercise
6) Natural causes such as Earthquake and flood.
* Kwong Yong shared that his grandfather was burnt and his ashes was kept in an urn, to pray.
* The same happened to dinosaurs. They died, the flesh was eaten by bacteria while the bones would always be underground until being discovered by Archeologists and scientists.

c) Hula Hoop dance.
 Last Friday, the kids decided not to have hoop competition but instead hulahoop dance. Thus, I asked them to go home and think of the dance steps. Today, everyone came forward to show off what they could do. Wow….was my reaction!
 Among their skills: spin and squat, spin with hands, spin and raise hands, spin and wiggle body, spin on neck and spin with abdomen.
 Then, we discussed to create our own hula dance. The class was divided into 2 groups. 6 year-old kids and 5 year-old kids. First, kids rolled the hoops, then put them down, did some jumping jack, drove the hoops similar to car steering, spun on their waist and even did hopping and skipping.

d) Video Clips.
 We watched a few video clips on hula hoop dance. However, the kids were attracted most to the adults’ dance. Wow….awesome!
 Then, we listened to a few songs. The kids love “We are the champion” by Crazy Frog. We have yet to decide the suitable music for our dance.
