Our Digestive System

Wednesday (28/05/2009)

a) Fire Stones
Ze Yan: What are those for?
Sharlene: Did you get those 2 rocks from FRIM?
I shared with the kids the rocks from FRIM. These rocks were used by the cavemen to produce friction and make fire. Sometime, this method is used by campers.
Rub the two rocks together and in the dark, one can see the sparkles.
Song Chuan said that some people used woods to rub and get fire.
However, people don’t do that at home nowadays because it’s dangerous. Furthermore, it’s troublesome. Just but a match or a lighter.

b) The Body Structure
It was very nice of Eugene to share his family’s Body Structure Model. We een lent to the other classes to have a look.
While dismantling the parts, we learnt the names as well as the functions of “Digestive System”.
Sharlene: We need muscle to do many things.
Example: pull, push, carry and hit the mosquito (Justin).
We also need muscle to help us in food digestion.
Vocabulary: brain, throat (esophagus), lungs, blood veins (red- oxygen; grey – without oxyen but with carbon Dioxide), the heart, stomach, lungs, kidneys and rectum.

c) The Digestive System
When we eat food such as apple and a burger, the teeth would cut them into smaller pieces with the help of saliva.
They would go down through our throat into stomach. Stomach would secrete juices and Hydrochloric Acid is the strongest juice.
They would break the food into smaller pieces together with the help of stomach’s 3 strong muscle. Our stomach would take 4 hours before turning them into mixture similar to milk shake call “chime”. Thus, we usually get hungry after 4 – 5 hours.
Chyme goes into small intestines. Juices are also produced here to break the food so that villi of small intestine can absorb the minerals and nutrients.
The leftover is usually water and fiber that go into big intestines.
About 100 types of bacteria are in big intestine that will further break our food. In the process, bacterias produce bad odour. Thus, our faeces or “motion” is smelly.

d) FRIM Drawing
The kids recalled the sharings of yesterday. I helped them to label the pictures they have in mind. Example: waterfall, rocks, trees, snakes, hill, FRIM Kepong and etc.
They drew happily into their Record Book.

Our Baby Melon

Tuesday (26/05/2009)

a) Wise Quotes
* There is a magnet in your heart that will attract true friends.
-
Paramahansa Yogananda
* Kids: What is magnet?
* Jien Wei: That means when we do good things, we are good!
* Ze Yan: That means we can have magnets in our body.
* Zi Jun: Teacher, that means, we can stick to steels like fridge…….haaa!
* Shu Wei: What is attract?
* Sharlene: The quote means when we do good things, than we will have
many friends.
Just like the experiment we did on the beans: Saying Pleasant Words would help the plant to grow more beautifully and healthily”.
When we say unpleasant words or do unkind actions, we sould scare away good people!

b) Our Growing Plants!
Our plants have grown beautifully….most of them. Some kids’ plants did not grow even though we planted for the second time. I explained that quality of seeds are also important. It doesn’t matter as we would be sharing the vegetables together among ourselves!
We went down to check and saw two watermelon plants already bore tiny melons among with yellow flowers. The Red Lady Fingers were also beautiful with flowers like hibiscus……lovely!
They saw some ladybirds which ate the leaves. Thus, we plucked away the dying leaves and add more soil to the bigger plant. They need more fertilizer to hold the roots. So the kids worked in pairs plucking the dying leaves and also topped up the soil.
Some kids planted 2 different seeds in a pot. Thus, we transferred them to another pot.
Shu Wei: “We must take good care of the plants as they are now bearing baby melons”.

c) Hunting for Wen Yue’s sport shoes
Wen Yue lost his sport shoes last week. We had asked all the kids and asked them to wear their own sport shoes but nobody seemed to wear Wen Yue’s shoes. The school smsed to every parent and still there was no response. Thus, I got the kids to searched around the garden. We looked behind the trees, behind the slides and every possible place we could see. Yet, we couldn’t find the brown and orange striped KikiLala sport shoes! We just prayed that somebody would discover thaem soon.

d) Our FRIM Trip
We made a “U” shape. Every kid talked about their favourite part.
Eugene: I love the water….it’s cool! I could see many Daddy-Long-Legs.
Justin: I love seeing the sand in the water.
Ze Yan: I can’t forget the delicious pizza. The pizza gave us energy!
Le Xin: I love the sound of jungle. The monkeys and the birds chirping!
Jin Nan: The water is so cold! I love it!
Sharlene: I loved splashing water!
Yun Zhe: I like the rocks to build the castle!
Jin Shan: Splashing the water is so fun!
Yun Wen: I love the cold water.
Max: I love the cooling waterfall!
Song Chuan; The waterfall is the best!
Jing Kai: The waterfall is beautiful!
Shu Wei: The wayrerfall is awesome!
Wen Yue: My family and I went to Redang.
Foo Soon: I went to China and I liked the horses there!
Jien Wei: We went to China and we enjoyed the circus!

FRIM (Forest Research Institution Of Malaysia)

Monday (25/05/2009)

a) Gathering
Everyone was so excited that they are going for mountain hiking. Both myself and Teacher Re Hong checked the kids’ stuff. Then, name tags were given before marching into the bus.
They chat non-stop for the first 40 minutes in the bus.
Zi Jun: “Look at my food!”
Song Chuan: “Teacher, I brought mooncakes!”
Le Xin: “Teacher, I have spaghetti and also a mat”.
It was so merry as we went together with the other 6-year-old class.
Along the journey, we talked about the “bridge, toll, Klang River, traffic jam and The Store shopping centre”.
We sang songs we learnt in the class. Among, “The Rainbow Song, You Are Special, MOTHER, Lompat Si katak lompat, Gelang si paku gelang, Chan Mali Chan, Senang Hati”.

b) Hill Hiking
* The kids marched up the hill in their prospective groups. However, all teachers were very alert of every kid’s needs and actions.
* About a qurter of the journey, we saw a long snake. We stopped for a while Teacher Hoo and 2 passer-bys helped to distract the snake. About 15 minutes later, it crawled away and the kids creeped quietly along the hill. We were relieved when we reached the higher point. Here, we saw a small stream which led us to a small waterfall. The kids washed their tiny hands and ate their bites. Eugene’ s mum baked us pizza and Ze yan said, that’s the best pizza he ever had! Wow…! Meabnwhile, Justin’s mum was so caring to bake us her delicious chocolate muffins!....Hmmmm!
* We went downhill and we amazed at the huge leaves. We fanned ourselves. The trees were also labeled mainly because they are reservation trees. They are so tall because they had to shoot themselves up to gasp the sunlight. These, were what the kids learnt.

c) A Real Waterfall!
All the while, we only see them from books and movies but today, it’s for real!
The kids changed into their shorts and t-shirts. They walked slowly into the cooling water…..wooohhh!
They splashed the water to their teachers and friends. We even did meditation and some “Qi Gong” haaa! Zi Jun spotted some water spider or “Daddy Long Legs”. They tried catching them but they were too fast! Ze Yan brought a net and everyone tried catching fish….but….sigh….there wasn’t any fish!
We took a break for lunch. Rest for a while. Then, the kids soaked themselves again! Ze yan, Shu Wei, Jin Shan, Eugene, Justin all started collecting rocks and they said they were building a Rock Castle. I suggested that they take the leaves and put them up as trees. They loved the idea!
Teachers were very cautious of shivering kids. We also checked if their lips turned purple indicating they are cold!
Whatsoever, I felt proud that these kids completed this hiking successfully. I am sure, any normal Primary School who have challenge climbing the hill but these kids of ours were excited all the way…….no complaints of tiredness! In fact, along the hiking; we sang songs to motivate one another

Team Building

Friday (22/05/2009)

a) Revision: Flash Cards
· We revised words we have learnt.
· Team, sports spirit, players, referee, whistle, a straight line, thrower, catcher, baseball, bat, basketball, score, skeleton, skull, collar bone and ribs.

b) Diagnosed of game
· The team members were quite dissatisfied with the yesterday's basketball game. Thunderstorm scored 5 shots while Twister scored 2 only.
· They thought for a while before giving me opinions.
· Ze Yan: Nobody blocked the opponent.
· Eugene: They just ran and grabbed the ball themselves.
· Teacher: Good answers! Which means....the players are still unsure of the rules. This is very
common when you are new in a game. You have been woking individually all the while. Suddenly, when it comes to team work, everyone got confused. You even blame your own team player! You even snatched the ball from your own team player!
· We learnt more detail about “Team work”. TEAM= Together Everyone Achieves Mission!
· You may be the best runner but if you are tired, you still need another friend to support you!

c) Mountain Climbing
· “Everyone is a leader” I told the kids. As we are going for a hike at Frim on 25/05/2009, we really need everyone to pull this through....a sweet success!
· We watched 2 video clips on mountain climbing. They saw how the kid couldn't climb by itself. He needed assistance from other friends. Sometimes, he tripped but his friends quickly supported him.
· Yet, to prepare for mountain climbing, one needs lots of energy and alertness. Thus, the kids were advised to saty healthy and sleep well for the coming outing. They were also advised to bring along some food to provide energy such as Milo and biscuits.

d) Team Building
· Thus, no basketball until you know what team work is!
The kids were divided into 3 groups. Each group had to climb over a hill (a table) and go under wired bombs (threads). They had to be careful. Then, they had to cross a winding bridge (linkages of stools). Next, they had to run to rounds before sketching some pictures according to instructions. Groups that successfully finish this as a team would earn the Team Buiding spirit.
· Group 1 performed the best as only a player was ruled out by the wired bombs.

Basketball: 5-2

Thursday (21/05/2009)

a) The Cheerleaders
The girls queued to spice up their movements! Le Xin, Shi Jie, Yun Wen, Jin Nan, Jen Ning and Sharlene faced the whiteboard. They practised for the group “Thunderstorm”.
Jen Ning turned her body to face the class as she exclaimed “TH”. Sharlene exclaimed “UN”, Jin Nan exclaimed “DE”, Yun Wen exclaimed “RS”, Shi Jie exclaimed “TO” while Le Xin exclaimed “RM”. Then, they practised their different movement styles using both hands and legs.

b) More on basketball
We recapped on some rules of Basketball, reminding the kids not to run with the ball, not to foul and to watch the ball carefully. Sports Spirit was highlighted!
We went to watch a video clip series of “Michael Jordan” and team members. The kids were really excited and said that theycould really run and jump...haaa! Yes, I have to remind them that violent is not allowed!

c) The Mini Basketball Court
The kids got better today as they know where to throw the ball and to be careful not to hit the opponent. They didn't want Free Throws for the opponents!
However, it was so funny that the kids grabbed the ball and wanted to seize the court themselves...! They were not used to pass the ball to their team members. We had a break and the kids got into their teams. I guided the Thunderstorm while Teacher Pik Xia guided the other team.
“Remember to block your hoop! Pass to your team mate.”
Observation: Eugene could really run and bounce very well. Zi Jun still bounced with two hands. Max showed improvement at throwing. Jin Shan at times still ran with the ball. Ze Yan got excited when he could throw to his team. Song Chuan got 2 Free Throws as Thunderstorm played foul upon Twister. Song Chuan scored 2 points for Twister. The main reason was there was nobody from Thunderstorm to block Song Chuan from Twister!....The score: 5 for Twister and 2 for Thunderstorm. They were very tired, confused and well,.....wasn't really satisfied!

First Basketball Practice

Friday (15/05/2009)
a) Little Instructors
· We formed a big circle. The kids took turn to instruct the class on warm-up exercises. Foo Soon did “Tae-Kwondo” style which the class immediately said “That’s not warm-up”…….haaaa!
· We identified our left and right parts of body.
· The kids learnt some marching steps. We marched on the spot. Then, we marched in a circle. On the command of “Attention”; they all immediately stopped stamping their feet.

b) Choice of sport
· It was a rather windy day. It would be difficult to start badminton practice. Furthermore, the kids didn’t bring any racquets. Thus, we discussed of what to do.
· Finally, some kids suggested Basketball. Yun Zhe said we can practise Badminton after we have completed Basketball training.
· We divided ourselves into 2 groups. They wanted “Thunderstorm” and also “Twister”.

c) Basketball Practice
· We marched to the porch or rather our “Basketball Court”. In the 2 teams, the kids opractise throwing and bouncing. It is crucial to recognise the differences.
· Next, we bounced at one spot. Then, we bounced while walking.
· Finally, the kids ran opposite of me so as to catch my ball. Some even tried runninga and bouncing at the same time. I was glad that both the girls and boys were interested in this game.
Kids must try every activity as to build their stamina and confidence. Then, at the end of this theme; they can decide which sports is their most favourable one!
· “Look where the ball is” was what we learnt most. Being afrad of the ball would cause us avoiding it.

The Broken Bones

Monday (14/05/2009)
a) Storybook: The Broken Bones
· The kids mentioned that some friends pull their t-shirts when playing time. It already happened twice today.
· Thus, we discussed on this topic.
· There are 2 types of joints in our body. The hinge joint and the round and ball joint. The hinge joint is similar to the door hinge; only open and close. Similar to our elbow joints, toes as well as finger joints.
· The book shared with us that broken bones must be bandaged carefully or put in a cast. This would allow the bones to re-join again. It usually takes 2 – 3 months. Some serious broken bones needed steels to join each other. Upon healing, one must be careful not to injure herself or himself again.
· They also learnt that bones can only move because of the attached muscles. We compared our bicep muscle and everyone giggled and was anxious to see that Zi Jun has the strongest muscle despite his cute size.
· Zi Jun said his family always brings him for outdoor activities such as swimming.

b) My broken collar bone.
· I shared with the kids my story. I had a broken collar bone due to snatch thief. It was so painful that I suffered for 2 months. I had a surgery and a stainless steel was placed to mend my broken bone.
· The kids were thrilled to see my broken bone. They even touched the stainless steel underneath my skin. Zi Jun said, “It must be really painful if you want to remove the steel again, right teacher?” The loving Le Xin gave me a hug to comfort me….haaaa!
· Thus, everyone especially the growing kids have to be extremely careful when they are playing or doing daily activities.

c) Improving our skills.
· We formed into 2 rows. A person from each row would stand in front with a ball. He or she would throw the ball to the first person of the row; and likewise. We did the high throw and also the low throw.
· Throwing and catching is so important in sports. It requires eyes, hands, body and also brain co-ordination.

Will we lose blood?

Wednesday (13/05/2009)

a) Yoga: back to focus
One way to get kids focus is doing what interest them.
First, we did a short meditation. We just listen to our breathing pattern.
Then, we folded ourselves into a little green bean. As the sun shone, we started growing towards the light. We stretched our body, legs and hands. Then, we waved following the wind. As we imagined pleasant words pouring down unto the little plant, it even grew taller and healthier. As unpleasant words were poured unto it, it strted falling down slowly.
Lotus: We held hands together and sat in a circle. Still holding hands, we stretched our legs to the middle. Then we slowly fell backwards pretending to bloom.
A Boat: In pairs. Facing each other. Feet against feet, bended. Then, holding hands; they took turn to pull each other.
See-saw: In pairs. They faced their partners back to back. This time, they pushed each other. They were giggling to see who is stronger…….:) Again, reminder: giggling or laughing may harm our body when doing exercise.

b) Will we lose blood?
Skeleton plays 3 important functions: giving us a shape, protecting our organs and also making new blood cells.
A bone is hard but within it, we can find an agent that makes blood. The heart would pump the blood to care for our body activities. We would learn about blood in the near future.
An adult has 206 bones. Backbones or spine is very important. A baby has 33 while an adult has 26 pieces of vertebrate. Any damage to any vertebrate would cause us sickness such as paralyse.
Thus, kids must be very careful when playing and exercising as their bones are still forming and not solid enough.
We must be careful with our sitting and writing posture. We shouldn’t sit hunchly or lay our head on the table always. This bad habit would affect our fine posture.
The ribs protect our lungs. The kids got excited to show their ribs. Femur is the longest bone in our body.
The skull protects our brain, the boss of the body.
Healthy food is very important for strong bones.

c) Balancing: bean bags.
The kids were divided into 2 groups. Each had to walk starightly with a bean bag on his or her head. Then they have to walk back to the starting point. It was challenging for the kids as most of them tried using their hand to prevent the bean bag from falling off.
Kids who always walk and sit properly were able to carry the sack more easily. Jen Ning, Ze Yan, Song Chuan and Jin Nan were independent. The rest needed some encouragement.

Formation Of Cheerleaders

Monday (11/05/2009)

a) Vocabulary
Revising some words learnt: sports spirits, Congratulations, Good Luck, Thank you, Try again, team, whistle, referee, team, thrower, catcher, ball, score, win, baseball, cheer.

b) Cheerleaders
As some kids suggested to have pom-pom team last week, we talked about this today.
Criterias for cheerleaders: (i) alert, (ii) song or theme, (iii) unform and (iv) props.
Some newspaper cuttings showed that both boys and girls could be cheerleaders. They have to practise hard and have strong muscles.
We watched some video clips. One on an International kids Cheerleader Competition. Another one was a Toronto dance. Another one was the Korean dance.
They giggled and thought that those performers were very good!

c) Our Very Own Cheerleaders
We used 1-2-3-4, 2-2-3-4, 3-2-3-4 and 4-2-3-4 as the rhythmic movement.
We had 2 movements. One similar to jumping and leaping. Another was similar to driving. Hands and legs movements were so active here!
Then, we had a competition between boys and girls. The kids chose the capable cheerleaders among them.
Ze Yan, Max, Foo Soon, Song Chuan, Yun Zhe, Jen Ning, Sharlene and Shi Jie.
The kids wanted to have this activity no matter what sports we will be playing.

d) Baseball
The boys were especially eager to play this from beginning of the lesson.
The girls: Yun Wen, Shi Jie, Jen Ning, Sharlene and Le Xin preferred to the Cheerleaders for this Baseball game. I allowed as they have earlier tried this game but preferred Cheerleading to Baseball.
There were 12kids left and we divided ourselves into 2 teams: SHARKS and STINGRAYS.
We threw a coin to determine the “catchers” and “throwers” team.
Then, we recapped rules of the game quickly as we have a new player today; Zi Jun.
In the field, each kid was seriously trying their best! Of course, there was improvement compared to the previous lesson! However, due to the place constraint; we could only have s nall run……haaa…..which already caused the kids to get tired easily!

Perfume Framed Cards

Friday (08/05/2009)

a) Perfume
It was very generous of Ze Yan to share his perfume with everyone in the class; as well as with the 5-year old class.
The kids touched up their picture frame as a Mothers’ Day gift.
Some added colourful sugar paper as flowers or borders.
Some checked their spelling, while some tied ribbons on the frame.
Finally, we queued to have our frames sprayed with Ze Yan’s perfume.

b) Rules of Baseball.
We are not going into the real Baseball which observes so many rules. We are more into kids’ Rounders. The kids preferred the name Baseball to Rounders.
2 teams: Team A and Team B. Team A’s leader; Ze Yan and Team B’s leader; Shu Wei picked draws and Team B got to be the “thrower”. Team A would be the “batter”. The other members of Team B would be standing around the field. They were the catchers. The other Team A members took turns to hit.
Kids took turns to change position upon 3 hits. The batter would have to run immediately making a home run. To achieve this, there are 4 hula hoops arranged in a diamond shape. The running batter must step into each hoop when he runs.
Half of the class enjoyed the game. They wanted to continue next week.

c) The Cheerleaders.
Some girls including jen Ning, Sharlene, Yun Wen and Shu Wei preferred to cheer. Jen Ning asked whether they can form a “Pom Pom” team.
Some kids didn’t know the meaning of “Cheerleaders” or “Pom Pom” team.
Thus, I showed them some newspaper cuttings. Even boys took part in competitions as they can perform stunts better than girls.
I taught the girls some simple steps which were similar to exercises…haaaa! They loved it and later modified the steps.
There would be further lessons on this in the coming lessons.

Mothers’ Day frame

Thursday (07/05/2009)

a) A handicapped boy.
Why are some people handicapped? Due to accident, from childbirth or even from malnutritious meal.
Unhealthy bone growth could be one of the reasons. What can handicapped people do?
Some of them are good painters. Paintings by foot or mouth. However, none of the kids have seen this. We would try to search for these paintings.

b) Everyone Is Special
Thus, we sang the class’s favourite song to remind that each and everyone is special!
Today, we danced to the music. The kids followed my dance steps…..Pheww……they get tired easily…haaa!
However, before dancing; we did warm-up to stretch our bodies.
Some kids volunteered to be the instructor.
We even did some stretches of trees, chairs and see-saws.

c) Continuation of Mothers’ Day frame.
We sang the song on “Happy Mothers’ Day”.
Then, the kids proceeded with written work. Some copied the lyrics hoping to sing for their mother this Sunday. Some preferred to write their own message such as Jen Ning. I helped her with the spelling.
The wrote those words on many shapes. Some were written on a big love, a butterfly, or even on a shark!
After pasting to the main cardboard, the kids tied a knot so as to hang the photo frame. Most were rather dependent on me. A few like Yun Zhe were quite independent.
We would continue with the other decorations tomorrow.

Our Pressed Flowers

Wednesday (06/05/2009)

a) Song: Happy Mothers’Day
We learnt a new song. They explained the sentences. However, they asked me the meaning of “sigh”.
Lyrics:
My mother is the Best!
She always loves me so,
She necer sighs at me,
She always tries her BEST!
Oh, you are like the Magic Star,
You Are So Special,
M O T H E R,
Mother, I love you!

b) Our Pressed Flowers
The kids were anxious to see their pressed flowers ready. It took them a week to see the results. The flowers were kept in between pages of heavy thick books.
First, they decided the way to decorate their cardboard rectangle frame.
Then, they used some glue to paste on to the cardboard frame.

c) Message
What’s the message for your mum?
Among phrases: I Love You/ You Are Special / Happy Mothers’ Day / You Are The Best!
They wrote those messages onto their cards.

d) Batting and Throwing.
We used badminton racquets for this purpose.
We took turns to bat and hit. We used the hand-made paper ball.
It really took eye and hand co-ordination for this activity.
It was a challenge for them.

Warm up

Tuesday (05/05/2009)

a) Don’t waste food!
Le Xin carried a bowl of noodles from the kitchen. Unfortunately, she couldn’t finish them.
However, I told her that we would wait for her to finish while conducting the class. Eventually, sitting in a corner of our classroom, she finished them.
So many people die every day because of insufficient food. I promised them that we would be watching a video clip on “don’t waste food” on the next lesson.

b)Warm up
What is warm up? Eugene said it’s when we let our body heat up before playing a game or sports.
Sharlene said we might faint if we ignore warm-up. Foo Soon said we might injure our body too.
Ze Yan said our bones might break. I introduced the word “fracture” and “bandage”.
A fractured person need a cast or a good bandage to hold the bones so that they would grow and form strong again. Thus, they had to rest about 2 – 3 months depending on the situation.

c) Warm up exercises
We spread around and started the “mountain” pose. Then, we exercised our arms, elbows, fingers. Next, our knees, ankles, waist and also our neck. Finally, we sat down to stretch our body. We tried touching our toes with our fingers. Some kids were able to while some weren’t so. Then, we lifted our leg slowly. We also lifeted our both legs up. Half were able to while the others complained of pain…….haaa!
Frequent exercise would avoid the pain. Our muscle would be stronger then.

d) Pitching the ball.
We first watched a video clip on “rounders and baseball”.
We summarized that there are 2 teams, the runners run fast, their eyes must always be alert and they must listen attentively.
I was the Umpire or referee. The 2 teams called “Lin Dan” and “Lee Chong Wei”.
First, they queued in a line. I use the racquet as a bat. They were excited taking turns to throw the ball in whatever ways they could.
Then, they queued in 2 lines. Every kid took turn to pitch the paper ball. I explained that in a baseball game, the balls must be pitched or thrown properly. Otherwise, it would be called a “Unqualified ball”.

e) Feedback.
* Half of the kids required this game to be continued. However, the girls preferred to be the cheerleader team. We would try this activity for another 2 times before deciding the outcome. “Never Give Up!” is the sports spirit.

Functions of Our Skeleton

Monday (04/05/2009)

a) Measurement of Sprout
We compared the 3 containers. The “unpleasant” container was the shortest and seemed to be growing downwards like a hunched person.
The “pleasant” container surprised us with its beautiful purplish stem and nice leaves.
The natural plant grew the tallest but was very thin.
Would they be different in a few days time?
A few kids came forward to measure.
The “pleasant”was 6.5 cm. The “unpleasant” was 1.5 cm. The natural was 11.5 cm.

b) Skeleton and bones
Skeleton has 3 main functions. First function is to give shapes.
Teacher: What’s the second function?
Eugene: To protect our body.
Yes, to protect our organs. Skull protects our brain. Ribs protect our lungs. Skeleton also protect our liver, heart, stomach, intestines and also kidneys.

c) Moving our joints.
Some joints enable us to move around. Example: the neck, the wrists, the hip, the ankles and the arms.
Some can only move two-ways. Example: The elbows and also the knees and calves.
Experiment: We pasted 2 small boxes and lifted the boxes up and down. This is similar to our knees.
Teacher: Why does this happen?
Eugene: Because of the joints….. Teacher: But…how different?...Go
home and ask your family.

d) Tactics of throwing
We learnt a few: low throw and high throw. The kids learnt to throw with their arms and elbows.
We marched downstairs in 2 separate groups. Each threw the paper ball into the box.
We tried both tactics. Finally, the kids threw in the ball based on their comfortable style.

Recording Our Sports

Thursday (30/04/2009)

a) Pleasant Words
We excitedly queued in a straight line. We whispered the unpleasant words to the little beans in the first container “Unpleasant”. The rule is to whisper and not telling other friends what unpleasant words they said to the beans. These words would be words they dislike their friends calling them or what they heard fron their surroundings. However, some giggled and whispered to their friends.
Then, we queued to say pleasant words to the second container. They said cheerfully and loudly. Among them; “I love you! You are special! You are beautiful! I like you! Everyone likes you!”
Meanwhile, the third container is neutral, meaning we let it grow naturally.
I can……
Teacher: So, what have you learnt for the past 2 weeks? What can your body do?
Jin Shan: Our stomach has long intestines…………..Teacher: Yes, to absorp and digest food.
Jien Wei: Our heart is important. Song Chuan: We can run.
Wen Yue: We can jump. Foo Soon: We can play.
Jen Ning: We can fold paper balls. Eugene: We can throw balls.
Vocabulary and Recording
We recalled the game of yesterday. Among vocabulary were “team, player, referee, score, winner, runner-up”.
Yun Zhe: Teacher, what do you call people who throws? Teacher: A thrower.
Ze Yan : What about a person who catches? Teacher: A catcher.
The kids then took their new book and labelled their names. They turned to first page and started drawing pictures and labelled them too.

b) Mother’s Day
Teacher: What would you like to give to your mother for Mother’s Day?
Ze Yan: A nice card. Justin: A nice present.
Teacher: Do you like this pretty bookmark? Jin Nan: Are those real flowers?
Teacher: Yes, they are….but they had been pressed for a week.
Jen Ning: I don’t have flowers at home, my teacher.
Jin Nan: Mine, is big. I have to ask my father’s permission first.
Teacher: It’s okay. You can always add the flowers. We shall now go to the garden and search for
suitable flowers and leaves.
Before that, we learnt to fold the recycled paper into an ice-cream cone. We marched down to the garden. We picked and plucked the suitable flowers and leaves.
In the classroom, we took out very heavy books.
Each kid was given 2 wax paper. Then their flowers and leaves were placed in between. Next, teacher helped them to put in between pages of heavy books.
Yun Zhe and Jin Nan were funny but creative. They carried the blocks and legos to put above them….haaaa! Hopefully, these flowers would turned out nice.

Our Paper Ball

Wednesday (29/04/2009)

a) Story: The limping squirrels.
They lived in an orchard and had been limping for many years. They couldn’t get nuts easily from the trees as cobra snakes live on the trees.
They had to store food for winter. Luckily, the clouds stated changing to grey. The wind started blowing strongly.
The nuts began to fall to the ground. Each squirrel; Harry and Genie carried a basket to collect the nuts. Thus, our objective for today is to help them too.

b) Throwing and catching paper ball
We had 2 teams. The first team is Harry. The second team is Genie. They would stand in 2 lines. Each kid took turn to catch the ball by holding a box in front of his team. He would have to use his eye and body coordination to catch the ball into the box.
The kids learnt that their eyes would inform their boss which is the “brain” to move their arms and legs to the relevant position. We call this “reflex”.
They were very excited. They had to stand behind the drawn lines. As they improved, I increased their distance between the thrower and catcher.
After every round, they counted the ball collected.
A chosen kid would record the score.
When we finished the whole game, we counted the score together. Harry’s Team scored 44 while Genie’s Team scored 52.

c) Planting green beans.
The kids wondered about the purpose of this experiment.
We prepared 3 small containers. We placed wet cotton. Then 2 green beans were placed into each container.
First container: Pleasant words. Second container: Unpleasant words.
Third container: Natural growth.
They queued behind the first container. They took turn to say pleasant words to the seed. They queued behind the second container and said unpleasant words. The third container was left alone, to be grown naturally.

My Skeleton

Tuesday (28/04/2009)
a) Creating movement
We sang the song to “Everyone Is Special” by Barney. Surprisingly, just 3 times of singing, they could remember more than half of the lyrics. Some sang by memory, some looked at the lyrics.
Then, I invited the kids to create movements.
Foo Soon showed some kickboxing…phew! Jien Wei some hopping. Wen Yue ….some breakdance. While Jen Ning, some jumpdancing.
So, I hinted them with other movements. “Fly, hop, swim, jumpdancing”.
They tried imitating me. Thus, the group stayed in their teams of ‘Lee Chong Wei” and also “Dolphin”.
They were quite good. Yet…we still need to work on a more rhythmic dance movement…haaa1

b) Revision: Vocab of Sports
We recapped on some vocab for Monday’s games.
Among: team, player, pass the ball, roll the ball, Sports Spirit, cheer and referee.

c) My Skeleton.
We have about 206 bones. Bones or skeleton give us a shape and protects our organs.
What is organ, asked Ze Yan? Among them are our heart, kidney, lung etc.
To own healthy bones, we must eat healthy food such as fruits, cheese and also bread.
Bones are straight. Joints among them is the reason they can move.
We counted the joints on our hands. Each finger has 3 joints.
We would be continuing more in the next lesson.

d) Is thumb important?
Can we do things with only 4 fingers?
First, we rolled newspapers into balls using 5 fingers.
For the second ball, I pasted their thumb. Of course, they started complaining. However, Max, Ze Yan, Jin Nan, Eugene, Jien Wei and Jen Ning were among the very attentive kids who tried rolling more than 2 balls with only 4 fingers.
Kids: Using 5 fingers is much easier than 4 fingers. Can we free our thumb now?
Haaa….!

Sports Spirit

Monday (27/042009)

a) Sports Spirit
Players can either be individual or in team.
Before playing, they usually have their cheerleaders or create their own cheers.
Then, they handshake before begin.
After playing, whether winners or runner-ups; they will congratulate one another.
The kids chose their team.
We had “Lee Chong Wei” and “Dolphin” group.
Marks would be given based on a) team work, b) speed, c) sports spirit.

b) Passing and Rolling Balls.
First game was to roll a ball under their legs. Thus, they had to stand in a straight line with wide-opened legs. If they worked together, thus; they would be faster and more efficiency. Lee Chong Wei’s team won.
The second game required them to pass the ball above their heads to the back player.
Thus, they had to pay attention; otherwise, they would easily dropped the ball and would waste time.
Dolphin’s team missed by 2 seconds. Yet, every player was so supportive. They didn’t tease the losers. The runner-ups didn’t feel disappointed. They lined up to shake hands saying “Congratulations” and “See you next time!”

c) My Body Parts
We continued our class drawing.
We continued from arms to fingers, legs, knees, toes and also ankles.
Teacher: Why do some people have frequent pain on their knees?
Class: Because they walk too much…..haaaa!
Actually, knees carry our body weight. Thus, if a person is too fat, they are not advisable to do jogging. They should do lighter exercises in gym or just evening walks.
But what is behind our visible body parts? To be continued….

Everyone Is Special

Friday (24/04/2009)

a) Song: Everyone Is Special
We read through the words once before singing together.
The melody was fun and the kids like knowing that “They are special”!
We tried moving our body to the music. Some moved fast while some prefer to clap their hands. The kids agreed to think of new dance steps and share with the class next week.

Lyrics:

You are Special, you're the only one;
There isn't another in the whole wide world,
Who can do the things you do,

Oh, you're special! Special!
Everyone is special!
Everyone in his or her own way!

Oh, you're special! Special!
Everyone is special!
Everyone in his or her own way!

b) Game: Balloons
Some kids tried blowing balloons. However, it was quite tough. Foo Soon enjoyed blowing them and I helped the kids to tie.
We went downstairs to form 2 groups. Every kid in the each group used only their hands to hit the ball from one end to another end; so as to pass to their friends.
As the wind was arther strong, we continued the game in the class.
The objective of this game is to enable the kids listen to instructions and play by the rules. Discipline was instilled here.

c) Colouring
The kids continued the art for “Earth Day”. Today, they learnt to colour nicely within the lines; if possible.
We went down to see the other framed pictures drawn by kids a few years ago. They said they were nice.
With that thought, they marched upstairs to start colouring. It was nice to see how they enjoyed their colouring and were serious about it.
