Big Dragon Model

Friday (13/01/2012)

a) Brainstorm.
· The kids wanted to learn about Dragon Dance. We decided to invite Mr. Hoo as he was a Dragon Dance performer in his school. After learning, we would be able to perform the dance for the other kids during CNY visiting on 19/01/2012. As we had made the little dragon puppets, it’s time to make a bigger one. The actual Dragon model is in the office and would be inappropriate for kids to practise with it.
Teacher: how shall we make the big dragon model?
Yee Xuan: We can use boxes.
Tzen Yu: If the boxes are heavy, we can use colour paper.
Rei: It’s better to use recycled paper.
Ying Qiao: How about newspaper?

b) Group Task.
· The project required 3 groups. Group 1 for making the head, group 2 for making the body while group 3 for making the tail.
· BODY: We brought in newspapers and crumpled them into big balls. Then, kids stuffed them in plastic bags. These will be the body and there shouldn’t be too much newspaper as we wanted it to be light for kids.
· Alisa was the leader for the body part. Her group arranged the plastic bags in a straight queue like a snake. Then, they figured the way to combine the bags together. Eventually, they taped them with cellophane tape. Finally, the wrapped the bags with recycled cloth.
· Meanwhile, some kids drew dragon scales on colour paper and cut them. These are to be pasted on the dragon body.
· HEAD: Wei Lok brought a box and the kids requested it to be painted bright pink. Some kids did the painting while some painted the lion’s horns, whiskers and beard. As the paint was still wet, we shall decorate dragon’s face the following lesson.
· TAIL: Xiang Wei, Shang Hong and Tzen Yu drew and painted the dragon tail. They chose their favourite colour.
