Lion Dance Craft: The body

Monday (10/11/2011)

a) Briefly on Lion Dance
• I drew a Lion dance on the whiteboard. As I drew, some started reminding me of what I have missed at drawing. I took Jun Yu’s Lion model and we compared together. In the middle of the face is a round tool similar to “mirror”.
• Teacher: What’s the purpose of this mirror?
Xing Tong: To look beautiful.
Zhe Qing: To scare the monster away.
Exactly. Just as Nien monster attacks the lion, it will see its own reflection from that mirror. So, it actually got frightened by its own scary and ugly look.  The kids thought that Lions are smart!
• They come in many colours. Red Lion Dance represents bravery, green is playful, white is the oldest, black is aggressive. In some community, green lion dance represents the female.
Zhe Qing: If white lions are old, why could they perform so well? (from our previous video clip.)
Teacher: Older means with plenty of experience and kung fu skill. Furthermore, today a lot of Lion Dance performances are being modified. We can see various colour lion dance during performances.
• The class will learn more about lion dance in the next few days while making the lion craft model.

b) Paper cutting
• Last Friday, after playing around with Lion and Dragon Dance, 17 kids voted to learn more about Lion Dance. Thus, we would be making a big lion model. If successful, the kids shall then make a small lion model for themselves.
• Today, we focused on its body. Tomorrow, we shall continue with its head and face.
• Each kid was given a colour paper. A rectangle paper was folded into a square. Now, the paper looked like a triangle. It was folded into triangle again. The kids used their scissors to cut a “peak” shape similar to triangle. They can have as many triangle cut outs as possible. When ready, the paper was opened up and they looked really nice. These will be pasted onto the cloth (lion body). The 5-year old kids were guided separately as they needed to be more careful with scissors. Surprisingly, some were quite independent such as Shawn, Alisa and Rei. Each kid did at least 2 cuttings.
• Next, I showed the kids “the fish” shape. The “Ang Pow” red packet was folded into half. Initially, I drew the fish outline for them. Then as they got more independent, they did the cutting without much guidance.
• The 6 year old kids are learning to guide their younger friends. Example: Yun Xin guided Soon Yu, Qian Joe guided Xiang Wei. In fact, after a few practices, the kids volunteered to help just any friends.  Zheng Yuan sobbed when he spoilt his first cutting. With encouragement, he got better. Finally, he was so happy to do the fish cutting successfully and beautifully. Everyone felt good and did well! 
