Farewell, Aunty!

Friday (30/0702010)

It's not easy for kids to understand the meaning of departure unless that someone is really close to them. Only 2 kids could express their feelings to Aunty. Of course, Aunty patiently waited for their simple speech and was so moved by our farewell session.

a) Farewell Aunty.
Aunty came to our class at 2.45p.m. We make a heart shape to welcome her. First, the kids sang 2 songs: I love you ad also Care-a-lot. They were shy to dance and furthermore, they just woke up from nap….haaaa! Each kid took turns to give aunty their heart present and whispered some words to aunty. Some said they shall miss aunty’s bak kut the. Some said aunty worked hard to cook for us. Some said thank you. Then, the kids gave Aunty our huge Heart Present. Aunty said it was beautiful and couldn’t believed that it was made from recycled newspaper. The kids queued to give aunty some “Nescafe” in a tiny cup as that is Aunty’s favourite drink.

b) Storybook: The Boy who cried Wolf.
• Zhi Feng and Foo Soon were attracted with the p ictures of this book. Thus, I shared the story with the class.
• A shepherd boy who led his flock of sheep to the hill top for grazing grass. He was bored and played a trick on the villagers. When he cried “wolf”, many villagers brought their weapons and came to help. The shepherd boy giggled and said there the wolf must had gone away. Believing him, the villagers asked him to be careful. The ext day, he played the same trick again. This time, he laughed loudly and the villagers realized that they were fooled! Thus, they warned the kids not to repeat his mistake and waste the villagers’ time. A few days later, a sheep really came and the shepherd’s scream was of no use. The villagers laughed when they heard his screams thinking that it was another trick! Morale: We must be honest. We must also correct our mistakes when given a chance. Otherwise, we shall not have good friends.

c) The values.
• To assist the kids understand what he have been learning so far, I drew a tree trunk with the word “Rainbow Kids” in it. The branches represent our ongoing lessons and the values we learnt. Briefly:
- Care =responsible, love, sharing, helping, honest, bringing happiness, the magical words “thank you”.

d) Craft: Recycled Newspaper.
• The kids loved their hand-made Aunty’s present so much that they wanted a small craft for themselves. First, they sketched the pictures they wanted. This was already done on Monday.
• Each kid applied some glue onto their picture. Then, they took a handful of blended newspaper and squeezed to make it dry. They mixed it with some glue and applied to their picture. Initially, they found it sticky but then they started to enjoy themselves when they see the mould they made. I reminded them that once we paint the mould with poster colour, it would be pretty.
They agreed!
The 6 year-old kids used their imagination to make a tortoise and wow, it was nice and attracted the other kids.
