The Golden Coin

Wednesday (18/08/2010)

a) Warm up.
* Scissors, stone and cloth game.
* Similar to the Chinese version except that we change to English.
" How are you? How are you?
I am fine, thank you.
I am happy, thank you.
Are you ready?
1,2,3,4,5 GO!"

b) I am special.
* I brought in a golden chocolate coin for the class.
Teacher: You are just like a golden coin. What does that mean?
Shi Jie: that means we are beautiful.
* The others had no idea but were more attracted to share their experience of eating that golden chocolate coin.
Wee Hong: where does gold come from?
* It's actually a mineral from the earth. It has to be processed to make it of different shapes. People of the past don't use silver coins or paper money. They used gold bars and other forms of medium as money.
Yun Xin: Why did we stop using gold?
Teacher: Some countries still use golden coins. Previously, we also had golden coins but today, we use other metals as coins. Gold could be quite heavy and inconvenient. Every country has different coin face and paper money face.
* You are like a golden coin because you have the good value. When people ask us to do certain things, we have to think it over whether it's good or bad. When we are bullied, we shall stand up for ourselves. We help people in needs and not tease handicappers. We respect people because love is powerful. We know when to say "Yes" and "No" to protect ourselves.

c) Money value.
Teacher: Is money important?
* Our parents work hard to buy us things.
Teacher: What the important things that we need?
Jun Hong: House.
Yun Xin: Food. Xing Tong: Clothes. Qian Joe: Shoes. Wee Hong: Chocolates.
Teacher: Some chocolates as rewards, maybe.

d) Sketching coins.
* I introduced the kids different Malaysia coins.
* There are 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, RM1 and etc.
* I thought them how to sketch the coins.
* We would be learning a little about money value as to instil the appreciation attitude. Details will be further learned in year 6 and Primary School.
* The reason is because we shall be buying some food from a nearby Night Market. Then, we shall have a simple farewell party for the 6-year old kids who are moving to 6 years old class. We are also in the topic of "sharing and friendship".
