A Friendly Match

Tuesday (14/06/2011)

a) Father’s Day discussion.
• I asked the kids’ ideas on Father’s Day gift. Some said, “Kung Fu Panda, a big love and a car”. Tzen Yu mentioned “medal” and I thought great as it relates to our Games and Sports theme. But….are we just going to give the medal to our fathers easily? We decided to have a game with our fathers before awrading them the medal; just as we did for Mother’s Day. I asked the kids to think about the game.
• We sang “The Father’s Day” song. It was to the tune of “Digi: I will follow you”.

b) Badminton Rules.
• We recapped some vocabulary: badminton, shuttlecock, racquet.
• I highlighted some important rules such as: 2 teams, body or racquet aren’t suppose to touch the net, serve the shuttlecock below the waist height, no shuttlecock resting on the racquet, serve cross court and the full score is 21 points. The kids decided that Kindergarten Badminton score should be 7…ohhh….okay! Unlike football and basketball, badminton is being judged by an “Umpire”.

c) Analsying.
• We analysed yesterday’s performance. Kids get more confident and were better focused and hitters. They were more tolerant as a team. 
• However, the shuttlecock seems to be quite small for them to hit better. Thus, our objective of today is to strengthen our eye, hand and body movement.
• 1) 2 shuttlecocks were tied to the playground ceiling so that kids can focus at hitting them.
• 2) 2 small boxes were prepared whereby kids were to throw plastic balls into the boxes. This requires good aim! They loved it!
• 3) Badminton practice of single player.
• Thus, for the next half hour; the kids took turns to play at those 3 sections. Everyone got a hold of badminton much better.

d) A Friendly Match.
• I invited Teacher Pik Xia for a game. The kids observed how we played and how the points were awarded. They learnt a few cheers such as, “Go..go..go….Teacher!” “Focus teacher!” “You can do it!”
• The match ended with 10-9 and we awarded Teacher Pik Xia with a medal for the Friendly Match.
