Let’s Bowl!

Thursday (23/06/2011)

a) Size
* First, I drew a circle on he board. The kids guessed the item. Answers varied: balls, Angry bird’s head, shuttlecock top, an eye, a stomach and etc.
* Then, I sketched different sizes and kids guessed.
* Tiny ball, small ball, medium-sized ball, big ball and gigantic ball.

b) Ways To Play.
 How can we play with a ball? We brainstormed together.
 I can catch a ball, throw, hit, bounce, roll, juggle, spin, make, kick and smash a ball!

c) Ball Exercise.
 The class was divided into 2 rows. They faced each other.
 1) We threw and caught the ball. (High throw and chest throw).
 2) We bounced the ball, threw and caught it.
 3) We kicked the ball lightly with our foot.
 4) We rolled the ball from front to back.
 Along the process, arguments were everywhere. Thus, I highlighted on teamwork and unity, well-mannered ways to speak properly as encouragement to friends rather than scolding them!
Marks were given to understand the meaning of team work.

d) A Bowling Game.
 I briefly introduced the vocabulary: Bowler, ball, pin and bowling alley.
 Each player has got 2 chances to roll their ball towards the pins. If all fell at the time, it’s called “STRIKE”.
 The kids queued to roll the pins down Initially, they threw which was wrong Then, they learnt to roll better.
 Funny thing is the kids started to analyse the best way to arrange the pins. Some arranged it in straight line, some in square, in circle and some against the wall. Finally, the pyramid shape is the easiest to be knocked down.
