Formation Of Cheerleaders

Monday (11/05/2009)

a) Vocabulary
Revising some words learnt: sports spirits, Congratulations, Good Luck, Thank you, Try again, team, whistle, referee, team, thrower, catcher, ball, score, win, baseball, cheer.

b) Cheerleaders
As some kids suggested to have pom-pom team last week, we talked about this today.
Criterias for cheerleaders: (i) alert, (ii) song or theme, (iii) unform and (iv) props.
Some newspaper cuttings showed that both boys and girls could be cheerleaders. They have to practise hard and have strong muscles.
We watched some video clips. One on an International kids Cheerleader Competition. Another one was a Toronto dance. Another one was the Korean dance.
They giggled and thought that those performers were very good!

c) Our Very Own Cheerleaders
We used 1-2-3-4, 2-2-3-4, 3-2-3-4 and 4-2-3-4 as the rhythmic movement.
We had 2 movements. One similar to jumping and leaping. Another was similar to driving. Hands and legs movements were so active here!
Then, we had a competition between boys and girls. The kids chose the capable cheerleaders among them.
Ze Yan, Max, Foo Soon, Song Chuan, Yun Zhe, Jen Ning, Sharlene and Shi Jie.
The kids wanted to have this activity no matter what sports we will be playing.

d) Baseball
The boys were especially eager to play this from beginning of the lesson.
The girls: Yun Wen, Shi Jie, Jen Ning, Sharlene and Le Xin preferred to the Cheerleaders for this Baseball game. I allowed as they have earlier tried this game but preferred Cheerleading to Baseball.
There were 12kids left and we divided ourselves into 2 teams: SHARKS and STINGRAYS.
We threw a coin to determine the “catchers” and “throwers” team.
Then, we recapped rules of the game quickly as we have a new player today; Zi Jun.
In the field, each kid was seriously trying their best! Of course, there was improvement compared to the previous lesson! However, due to the place constraint; we could only have s nall run……haaa…..which already caused the kids to get tired easily!
