Our Paper Ball

Wednesday (29/04/2009)

a) Story: The limping squirrels.
They lived in an orchard and had been limping for many years. They couldn’t get nuts easily from the trees as cobra snakes live on the trees.
They had to store food for winter. Luckily, the clouds stated changing to grey. The wind started blowing strongly.
The nuts began to fall to the ground. Each squirrel; Harry and Genie carried a basket to collect the nuts. Thus, our objective for today is to help them too.

b) Throwing and catching paper ball
We had 2 teams. The first team is Harry. The second team is Genie. They would stand in 2 lines. Each kid took turn to catch the ball by holding a box in front of his team. He would have to use his eye and body coordination to catch the ball into the box.
The kids learnt that their eyes would inform their boss which is the “brain” to move their arms and legs to the relevant position. We call this “reflex”.
They were very excited. They had to stand behind the drawn lines. As they improved, I increased their distance between the thrower and catcher.
After every round, they counted the ball collected.
A chosen kid would record the score.
When we finished the whole game, we counted the score together. Harry’s Team scored 44 while Genie’s Team scored 52.

c) Planting green beans.
The kids wondered about the purpose of this experiment.
We prepared 3 small containers. We placed wet cotton. Then 2 green beans were placed into each container.
First container: Pleasant words. Second container: Unpleasant words.
Third container: Natural growth.
They queued behind the first container. They took turn to say pleasant words to the seed. They queued behind the second container and said unpleasant words. The third container was left alone, to be grown naturally.
