What Is Performance?

Monday (27/09/2010)
a) Brainstorming: Performance.
Teacher: What is performance? Have any of your family members performed before?
Chun kit: I saw Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse performing at Disneyland.
Zhi Feng: They were very funny. They also have fancy fashions.
Devin: We can change from a clock to a house.
Jun Yu: I saw magic show in Taiwan. There were also many games there.
Teacher: If inviting people to participate in a Game Show, that could be performance. However, Funfair is not. Well done!
Wee Hong: We can dance. Animals can perform too.
Qian Joe: We can act like cartoons.
Wei Jeen: We can sing.
Yun Xin: Some people tell stories.
Xing Tong: Can we do phonics songs?
Kwong Yong: We can share like what we did during Firefighter Sharing with other classes.
Zheng Yuan: Some people tell funny jokes.
Teacher: What about different music instruments?
Wee Hong: Yes, guitar. Zhe Qing: I can play the piano.
Qian Joe: Last year, we did Black Light.
b) Summarizing.
I shared with the kids performance which I took part when I was still a student. They tried guessing. Some included the choir group, dance and also performance.
Thus, performance include fashion show, singing, dancing, acting in drama, jokes, story-telling, magic show, musical performance and Black Light among others.
c) Decoration.
Teacher: We need to do some spring cleaning and decorations.
In the morning, the kids managed to do spring cleaning for half of the class. Thus, we continued the other half.
Among, we carried the baskets of toys from the school porch after being dried under hot sun. Then, we organized some of the recycled items properly. Sometimes, we the kids brought some recycled items and because we had extras, we kept them in boxes. However, they took up some space. To avoid messiness, we brought them to the store room.
Some kids took down the previous decoration from Notice Board.
Some kids assisted to label the items in the class such as whiteboard, fan, radio, shelf, Notice Board, toys, English, Bahasa Melayu and Chinese storybooks.
d) The Stage.
Teacher: Where do we perform?
Devin: On a wooden platform.
Kwong Yong: Let me draw on the board.
They didn’t know the name. It is called “the stage”.
Devin: We can hop into the bus and get to the Hokkien Association stage.
Wei Jeen: We can always perform downstairs.
Zhe Qing: We can make a stage from chairs.
Yun Xin: We can make our own stage from tables.
Qian Joe: They are dangerous.
Finally we found lower tables and worked together to make a big stage. We labeled it. Some kids assisted to sweep the floor.
Every kid has to think of what they can perform and to share with the class. They are encouraged to bring any storybooks or CDS and then, we would decide which topic we will venture into first. Wow!
