Being Handicapped

Tuesday (07/09/2010)

a) Flashcards
We learnt through words that we learnt throughout this theme. Among: care, happy, angry, sad, afraid, friends, balloon, Malaysia, flag, “Merdeka”, Malay, Chinese, Indian and world.

b) Unity
l We continued with our “Malaysia Book” by reinforcing the words “Unity”. Then, the kids pasted the word and coloured them. I also reinforced the word “flag” and reintroduced the Malaysia map as we had new 4-year old friends.
l Then, the kids coloured a small Malaysia flag above the Malaysia map.

c) Storybook: The Boy At The Window.
l It was a story about a pair of siblings. Jack and Jane always walked along the pathway and whenever they passed by a house with a small window, a boy would be throwing things at them. Sometimes, he threw his toys, sometimes, balls of paper and sometimes water.
l Jack and Jane got angry and started calling the boy unpleasant names such as “Ya…Ya…Ya… and silly boy!”
l Their mother heard them upon fetching them one day. Their mother was angry and asked them the reason why they used unpleasant words. Their mother explained that that boy’s name was Mark and he was a disabled or handicapped boy who sat on a wheelchair.
l Realising that they made a mistake, the kids visited Mark the next day with some toys and food. Now, the three kids are good friends.

d) Discussion
Teacher: Why did the boy throw things at people? How would you feel if someone throws things at you? How should we make friends? What can you do? What other types of handicapped people can you think of?
Devin: Last time, I threw things at passers-by. Today, I have improved. I don’t do that anymore.
Yun Xin: Throwing things at people is not the correct way to make friends.
Chun Kit: We should talk nicely to make friends.
Wee Hong: I have seen a wheelchair before.
Wei Jeen: I saw an uncle with only an arm and a leg, selling durians.
Wee Hong: Some people walked using a wooden stick.
* We learnt that some people are unfortunate. These are handicapped people but they must learn to be independent because we have to stand up strong again, every time when we fall down. Wei Jeen’s example was awesome. I shared with them about my father who had to use a wheelchair due to his weak body.

e) Our precious body.
l Chun Kit helped me to get an encyclopedia about “Our Body”.
l We saw skeletons surrounding our organs.
l If we run carelessly, we might fall and break our skulls. We might even break our legs and arms and ended up being handicapped. Every kid touched their body’s skeletons.
Devin: What do you call people who can’t talk?
l They are “mute” people. Some are already mute since birth while some is due to throat problem or bacteria causes.
l Deaf people have to wear an equipment to help them listen clearer.
l Sign language is important to help mute and deaf people to communicate with the society.
l Thus, we are lucky to be healthy. We must eat healthily and take good care of ourselves. We must appreciate our family’s hard work and love.
