Making Recycled Lanterns.

Friday (17/09/2010)
a) Flashcards
• We recapped words learnt throughout this theme.

b) Song: The Moon Festival
• First, we read through the lyrics and sang it together. Then, we interpreted it together. The kids wondered who Change Er was and I told them that she was the Moon Goddess and we would be learning more about her next week.
LYRICS:
To the moon (X2),
Let’s fly to the big round moon,
To the moon (X2),
Who lives in the moon?
Is it Chang Er or Hou Yi?
Is it rabbit or dragon?
Light the lanterns, light the lanterns,
Happy Moon Festival.

c) Lantern Craft
• First, I introduced the kids to the different patterns they could make. We used recycled 1.5 liter bottles for the craft. I used a blade to cut off the bottle top part and reminded them that it could only be done by adults as it is dangerous. Kids can choose to make normal ones or the flying ones. They could make just any patterns they want to.
• Kids took glass paper of their colour choices. They started cutting. Some were straps, some were triangles and some were squares. Some wrapped the bottle bottom with it so that it has different colour. It was challenging for the kids because the glass paper can be really sticky with glue on it. However, the kids were very determined at decorating their lanterns.
• Then, the kids took their pictures, drawn yesterday. They cut them into smaller pieces and decorated the bottle. I also prepared some Moon Festival pictures for them. Some preferred to decorate their lanterns with those pictures.
• It was so fun! They kept asking me if they could bring the lanterns home. Of course…..but upon completion. 
