Smile

Friday (03/09/2010)
a) Song and game.
• To warm-up, we sang the song, “Heal The World” using sign language; so that our new 4-year old friends could learn as well.
• Then, we played the “scissors, stone, cloth” game using our hands. The rhyme is a s follows:
“How are you, today? How are you, today?
I am fine, thank you. I am well, thank you. I am happy, thank you.
1,2,3,4,5……go.”

b) Storybook: Smile
• There are many countries in the world. Thus, there are many races with different colour skin. They speak different languages yet live in harmony and peacefully.
• This book showed faces of different races kids. The class was amazed to see some of them having fair skin, brown kin like us, pink skin, very dark skin and yellowish brown skin.
• More interesting, “Hello” is spoken differently in different languages. Example: “Salam” in Arab; by Malaysians too, “Bonjour” in France, “Konichiwa” in Japan, “Sawatika” in Thai, “Namaste” in India; by Malaysian Indians too and “Ni Hao” in China; by Malaysian Chinese too.

c) Respecting cultures.
• In order to continue our Malaysia Book, the kids need to know the meaning of this.
• Muslims in Malaysia do not eat pork. In fact, they can’t touch a dog. If they do, they need to wash that body contact quickly.
• Some Chinese don’t eat beef. Every race has different unique ways to say “Hello”. Example: Muslims would bend and lower their body towards the older people such as father. The kids would then take the father’s hand placing to their face and say “Salam” or “Assalamualaikum”. Then. The hands are parted and bring towards one own’s heart as a respect.
• Chinese usually shake hands while Hindus sometimes place their hands together (like prayers) and greet people. It is this respect brings different races together.
• We did a short demonstration in the class. Some were Muslims, some Chinese while some Hindus.

d) Book continuation.
• The kids continued to colour the pictures of various races. Then, they cut and pasted under the title, I Love Malaysia.
• The 4-year old kids needed more guidance.
