The Lantern Legend.

Thursday (16/09/2010)
a) Flashcards.
• We reviewed the words together as we are almost completing this theme.

b) The Legend.
Teacher: Every year, at Moon Festival; we carry lanterns. Why?
Qian Joe: Because it’s fun!
Chun Kit: Because it’s beautiful.
Yun Xin: Because to pray.
• Many years ago, in China; there was a horrible draught. The hot weather had destroyed the crops, people died especially the elderly and young ones.
• The King thought hard and decided to pray the Heaven God for blessing. To do this, all the citizens were told to light lanterns at their homes and on the night, everyone prayed together. It looked beautiful. Seeing what the people had done, the God gave rain to the people ad the country. Crops grew healthily, water filled the stream again and everyone was in joy and healthy once again.
• Thus, on the 15th. Day of the Chinese Eight Month; people would pray the Moon Goddess and play lanterns for blessings.

c) A World Celebration.
• Chinese people around the world will celebrate this festival together. Different countries’ cultures might differ a little.
• In Taiwan, they have meat barbecue.
• In Vietnam, they have dragon dance.
• In Malaysia, we have variety of mooncakes including durian and sambal mooncake…haaaa. 

d) Picture decoration.
• Who lives in the moon? Some people say it’s a rabbit, some say it’s the moon Goddess; Chang Er. When I drew her image with two bunches of hair tied on top of her head; they started believing that the hair shadow could be the rabbit’s ears. Nobody knows for sure because it’s a shadow reflection on the moon from the Earth.
• The kids had to decide what pictures they want for their lanterns. Some suggestions included stars, moons, rabbits, the Moon Goddess, the King and anything pretty.
• They just loved drawing. Thus, we shall start making the lantern tomorrow.
