The Challenge to read Time!

17/06/2008 (Tuesday)

a) The Clock’s Needles
The excited kids marched into their classroom. They quickly hid behind the door, under the tables, and even covered themselves with a cardboard…..ha! After drinking their water, they chose their favourite toys.
Meanwhile, I called them individually to continue the Clock Craft. We were making the short and long needles of their clocks by using straws. They chose a short and a long straw. Then, I helped them to insert a hard pin into the straws through the hole. Then, they pressed the two ends of the pin against the back clock’s surface. Then, they used their logical sense whether the straws are too long or short. Some played with their clocks after that.

b) A Trip To National Science centre
Next, we made a circle time. Then, we talked about our tomorrow’s trip to KLCC and National Science Centre. We will be going there by bus tomorrow together with the other 5-year old class. So, they have to reach school by 8 a.m. To guide in their imagination, I ran through some posters with them to strengthen their vocabulary.
The words included “rocket, planets, earth, spaceship, moon, sun, stars, comet, aliens”. Then, we talked about the possible things we would see there. They said they might see a huge rocket. They wanted to see if there were astronauts or even aliens!

c) Poem: Where is the Spaceship?
The kids tried reading the words themselves. They enjoyed the poem with actions.
Please read:
“Where is the spaceship?
The spaceship is going past the Moon, the Planets, the Comet and the Sun!
The Spaceship is going into a new world.”

e) Reading Time
After tea break, we learnt on how to read the clock. The children learnt about the short and long needles. They learn to recognize words like “clock and time”. The time they learnt included:
1.00, 1.15, 1.30, 1.45, 2.00 and etc.
Then, we did a lot of quizzes. This is a challenging topic for the kids. The more independent kids include SYu, ZY and also EG. We would recap more before the kids bring the craft home.
Then, they were each given a round piece of paper. It has different time. The objective is to encourage the kids and their family members to help one another to learn the time. They were excited about the craft!
