Duan Wu / Dumpling Festival or Dragon Boat Festival

06/06/2008 (Friday)

(a) Let’s organize the classroom
I got the kids to help me with tidying the classroom. Some helped me with wiping the shelves, some with the tables, some with the baskets, toys and also with the recycled products. Then they proceeded with corner playing. I had a few volunteers to help me with the cutting of letters to form the big word “S P A C E”. Then I pasted them onto the wall.

b) Good words
Today the kids kept commenting about one or two friends who speak unpleasant words. Thus, I drew a picture of “Ali” who has that character. Ali broke the teacher’s ruler and blamed it on his other friends. Consequently, he bore that guilty feeling throughout the day knowing he has lied to his friends and teacher. I related this to the phrase, “Siapa yang makan cili, dia yang rasa pedas”. The kids kept saying, “We must say good words to have friends. Lying is not good!”

c)”Duan Wu or Dumpling Festival or Dragon Boat” Festival
Then, I drew China and brought them to “Chu” state, back hundreds of years ago. The kids asked the meaning of “state”. So, I introduced other states including “Kwantung, Sichuan, Hokkien”. ZJ quickly came up to say that his grandmother is from “Hokkien”.
At that time, Qu Yuan was the first Chinse Poet and also an officer of “Chu” state. He defended his country and gave mnay suggestions to the King to avoid the states and country being taken by the enemies. Although the citizens liked Qu Yuan but the King didn’t adopt his ideas. Thus, on the 5th of the 5th month; the “Qin” conquered the “Chu” state. Qu Yuan was too sad that he jumped into the river. The people immediately rowed their boats to save him but failed. To avoid the sea animals from eating Qu Yuan’s body; they threw “Zong zi” or dumpling. In fact, some believd that monsters might harm him. So they tied the dumpling with bright threads. YZ and ZYg said, “He need not commit suicide just because he feels sad……” Well, I agree.
Dragon Boat Race
I drew a Dragon Boat and talked about it. It is long and narrow with 14 people. The Captain will be seated in front holding a flag to motivate his team! The drummer is behind and the rowers will road according to the drum’s melody and speed. Then, we coloured a dragon boat origami. We will fold it in the afternoon.

d) I Can Wrap Dumplings.
Next, we gathered the kids at the hall. Huang Teacher shared with them some information about the “Dumpling Festival”. Then, she introduced the names of ingredients. Next, she showed them the steps to wrap dumplings. We wrapped “Red Bean paste Dumpling”. Overall, the kids were excited and they honestly, they need to wrap many dumplings to be independent. Perhaps, parents who wrap dumplings at home, could train their kids. Later in the evening, the kids brought home their steamed dumpling......delicious!
