Fire Drill

11/06/2008 (Wednesday)

a) Corner Playing
This morning, the kids were excited because they were anxious about the fire drill practice. They played with toys while I called some kids for individual assessment. Today’s kids included XR, SY, ZY, M, EG and SYu.

b) Fire Drill Reasons
Next, I spent some time to talk about the fire drill. The objective is to save ourselves from FIRE and other emergency cases such as Earthquake. We talked about some rules. (1) No running, (2) Be quick, (3) Do not take anything. Stop doing whatever you are doing. (4) No quarrelling. Ensure all friends are in the line.

c) Fire Drill Practice
During the tea break, the kids were less noisy. They hope to listen to the fire drill alarm. They did their duties independently and quickly. Then, the alarm went off. The kids gathered in two lines and quickly marched downstairs using the Emergency Door. They quickly head to the main gate. They performed fairly well. They were excited. Some said that, it was just a practice with no fire. The objective of this “fire drill alarm” is to train the kids for emergency situations.

d) Story-telling: "What is Space?"
Next, we did story-telling. The title is, “What is Space?” They learnt that Space has planets, the Sun, asteroids, comets, shooting stars. EG said that the Sun is the biggest star. I corrected him saying that there are other bigger stars in the Universe. The Sun is indeed the biggest star in our Solar System. Then, we compared the asteroids, comets and shooting stars.

e) I can read the time.
I drew a big earth facing the sun. The part that faces The Sun is day time while the part that doesn’t face The Sun is night time.
We learnt that there are 24 hours in a day. So, I drew a clock and marked number 1 to 12. We learned to read the time. They read after me. Then I tested them.
Next, I use a long thread to make a big clock on the floor. Then, I marked the numbers 1 to 12. All stood up at
7 o’clock. We faced the window (which is The Sun). Then, we turned around until we completed 24 hours. So, in the day time, the sun rises, they wake up, brush their teeth and prepare for school. They reach ABC Kindergarten, enters Teacher Jen’s class, prepare for bathing and lunch. Then, they sleep at 12.45 noon. They get up at 2.30 p.m. Then, hop to the playground. They attend Teacher Hui Ping’s class and then go home at 5.30 p.m. They enjoy their evening, have dinner and sleep early at night. As they did role-play, they learnt to recognize the numbers and vocabulary.
