Let's zoom to Saturn!

10/06/2008 (Tuesday)

a) Individual Assessment
The kids got to choose their play. They carried their hand-made Spacecraft in and pretended making a home within it. Some played cooking while some played with toy cars. Meanwhile, I did individual assessment. Today's kids were SY, XR, LX, ZY, EG and SYu.

b) Rainbow and colours (bi-language)
After clearing the toys, the kids gathered for a Malay song. We sang, “Gelang Si Paku Gelang”. They sang twice with actions. We also sang their favourite, “The Earth Song”. Next, I asked them about the morning's weather. They said there was a beautiful rainbow. Then, I asked them when will a rainbow form? Rain plus sunlight equals to rainbow. They learnt that there are 7 colours of rainbow.
Next, I wrote the colour vocabulary on the board. We broke the words into their phonics sound. We read a few rounds. Then, I wrote the Bahasa sukukata beside each English word. Example: white – putih ; yellow – kuning. Then, we played games with the list of colours.

c) Saturn Planet
After tea break, they gathered in a circle. I asked them a question. “Which is the second biggest planet in the Solar System?” YZ, YP, SYu and ZY said “Saturn”. JN asked how many rings on the planet. There are 7 thick rings consisting of icy rocks. Some are as big as a house...and they said,...”Wow!” Syu said that spacecraft cannot land on Saturn due to the thick gas; just like Jupiter. They captured the photos and information through the orbiting satellite. It has 18 moons, just 2 lesser than Jupiter. The 7 rings consist of multi-coloured bands.

d) I can read and colour!
Next, the kids were given their new “Space Workbook”. They coloured the Saturn's picture according to the listed colours. Example: number 1 is red and number 2 is purple. They were rather independent. My objective was for them to recognise the words and able to read them. LX, YW and ZJ required more guidance. YW gave up at times. Thus, I led her round the class to see her friend's work. As a result, she became more determined after that. That's my smart girl! In fact, XR, SJ, JH and WY were rather independent. The kids couldn't finish; so I got them to do at home as homework.
